    Enhanced adhesion and OspC protein synthesis of the lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi cultivated in a host- derived tissue co-culture system

    Background: The adhesion process of Borrelia burgdorferi to susceptible host cell has not yet been completely understood regarding the function of OspA, OspB and OspC proteins and a conflict exists in the infection process. Aims: The adhesion rates of pathogenic (low BSK medium passaged or susceptible rat joint tissue co-cultivated ) or non-pathogenic Borrelia burgdorferi (high BSK medium passaged) isolate (FNJ) to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) cultured on coverslips and the synthesis of OspA and OspC proteins were investigated to analyze the infection process of this bacterium. Study Design: In-vitro study. Methods: Spirochetes were cultured in BSK medium or in a LEW/N rat tibiotarsal joint tissue feeder layer supported co-culture system using ESG coculture medium and labelled with 3H-adenine for 48 hours. SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, Immunogold A labeling as well as radiolabeling experiments were used to compare pathogenic or non pathogenic spirochetes during the adhesion process. Results: Tissue co-cultured B. burgdorferi adhered about ten times faster than BSK-grown spirochetes. Trypsin inhibited attachment to HUVEC and coculture of trypsinized spirochetes with tissues reversed the inhibition. Also, the synthesis of OspC protein by spirochetes was increased in abundance after tissue co-cultures, as determined by SDS-PAGE and by electron microscopy analysis of protein A-immunogold staining by anti-OspC antibodies. OspA protein was synthesized in similar quantities in all Borrelia cultures analyzed by the same techniques. Conclusion: Low BSK passaged or tissue co-cultured pathogenic Lyme disease spirochetes adhere to HUVEC faster than non-pathogenic high BSK passaged forms of this bacterium.     Fragility of the A-type AF and CE Phases of Manganites: An Exotic Insulator-to-Metal Transition Induced by Quenched Disorder

    Using Monte Carlo simulations and the two eg-orbital model for manganites, the stability of the CE and A-type antiferromagnetic insulating states is analyzed when quenched disorder in the superexchange JAF between the t2g localized spins and in the on-site energies is introduced. At vanishing or small values of the electron-(Jahn-Teller)phonon coupling, the previously hinted "fragility" of these insulating states is studied in detail, focusing on their charge transport properties. This fragility is here found to induce a rapid transition from the insulator to a (poor) metallic state upon the introduction of disorder. A possible qualitative explanation is presented based on the close proximity in energy of ferromagnetic metallic phases, and also on percolative ideas valid at large disorder strength. The scenario is compared with previously discussed insulator-to-metal transitions in other contexts. It is argued that the effect unveiled here has unique properties that may define a new class of giant effects in complex oxides. This particularly severe effect of disorder must be present in other materials as well, in cases involving phases that arise as a compromise between very different tendencies, as it occurs with striped states in the cuprates.Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, RevTex 4, submitted for publicatio

    INVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECT OF SPORT AND ART EDUCATION ON BODY IMAGE

    The purpose of this study is determining body image in individuals with sports and fine arts education. 137 male and 120 female, total of 257, sports and fine arts students were participated in the study. Body-Cathexis Scale (BCS) were used. Independent Samples t- test was used for statically processing. Body Image score according to gender found at male 77.96 and female 80.12. Body Image score found at sports students 74.05 and fine arts students 84.03. There was a significant no difference in between sports students and fine arts students in Body Image Score (p>0.05) in gender. There was a significant difference in between sports faculty and fine arts faculty according male and female students in Body Image Score at p<0.001 level. Female students are according male students under greater risk regarding the body image. Body image points were more positively at student of sports than student of fine art. It is thought that sport education affects body image more positively than fine arts education. Getting with sports education could contribute to a positive body image levels

    PERCEPTION OF THE BEHAVIORS OF THE COACHES OF FOOTBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL PLAYERS

    The aim of this study is to investigate the perception of the amateur football, volleyball, and basketball players and their coaches’ behaviour towards them. 100 amateur football, 60 volleyball and 62 basketball players that filled recognition survey fully are included to the study. Turkish version of Coach Behavior Rating Scale was used. One Way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and LSD (Least Significant Difference) tests were used for statically processing. There is no significant difference found in evaluation of coach behavior of football, volleyball, and basketball players in terms of personal rapport from subscales (p>0.05). A significant difference has been revealed in the sum of scale in physical training and goal setting at p<0.05 level and technical skills, mental preparation, competition strategies, negative personal rapport, and scale total score behavior of coach at p<0.001 level. There were differences according to branches. Technical skills and competition strategies have been found in volleyball more high from amateur football and basketball players. Negative personal rapport has been found in amateur footballers lower from volleyball and basketball players. Differences have been found in detection levels of amateur footballers, volleyball, and basketball players for coaches’ behaviour against them. A very useful outcome would be for a coach to produce a “Personal Improvement Behaviors” and set goals for the next of behaviours. According to branches, the reasons of differences in detection levels of coaches’ behaviors should be determined and eliminated.  Article visualizations

    The role of theory of mind, emotion knowledge and empathy in preschoolers’ disruptive behavior

    Objectives : Research examining disruptive behaviors in clinical groups of preschool and school-aged children has consistently revealed significant difficulties in their emotion knowledge and empathy but intact performance in their theory-of-mind (ToM). However, it is largely not known if these difficulties in emotion knowledge and empathy as opposed to ToM are specific to extreme forms of disruption in clinical groups or rather represent broad deficiencies related to disruptive behaviors in general, including the milder levels exhibited by typically developing children. Milder disruptive behaviors (e.g., whining, arguing, rule-breaking and fighting) in peer contexts might relate to normative variations in socio-cognitive and emotional skills like ToM, emotion knowledge and empathy.
