One Schema to Rule them All. The Inner Workings of the Digital Archive ARCHE

A Resource Centre for the HumanitiEs (ARCHE) is a digital archive provided by the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities, which is part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The archive welcomes data from all humanities fields and offers persistent hosting as well as dissemination of resources. The technical setup of ARCHE is described, focusing on the bespoke metadata schema that was created to help in finding, accessing, and reusing data. Beyond that the schema binds together the different system components, contains mappings to other well-known schemas, provides multilingual labels for GUI display, and is used to generate a metadata form

A Resource Centre for the HumanitiEs (ARCHE) is a digital archive provided by the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities, which is part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Variability of the Facet Values in the VLO -a Case for Metadata Curation

Abstract In this paper we propose a strategy for metadata curation especially with respect to the variability of the values encountered in the metadata records and hence in the facets of the main CLARIN metadata catalogue, the VLO. The approach concentrates on measures on the side of the infrastructure and on the interaction between human curators and the automatic processes

SMC4LRT - semantic mapping component for language resources and technology

Zsfassung in dt. SpracheThe ultimate objective of this work was to enhance search functionality over a large heterogeneous collection of resource descriptions. This objective was pursued in two separate, complementary approaches: a) design a service delivering crosswalks (i.e. equivalences between fields in disparate metadata formats) based on well-defined concepts and apply this concept-based crosswalks in search scenarios to enhance recall. b) acknowledging the integrative power of the Linked Open Data paradigm, express the domain data as a Semantic Web resource, to enable the application of semantic technologies on the dataset. In parallel with the two approaches, the work delivered two main results: a) the specification of the module for concept-based search together with the underlying crosswalks service accompanied by a proof-of-concept implementation. And b) the blueprint for expressing the original dataset in RDF format, effectively laying a foundation for providing this dataset as Linked Open Data. Partly as by-product, the application SMC browser was developed - an interactive visualization tool to explore the dataset on the schema level. This tool provided means to generate a number of advanced analyses of the data, directly used by the community for exploration and curation of the complex dataset. As such, the tool and the reports can be considered a valuable contribution to the community. This work is embedded in the context of a large research infrastructure initiative aimed at providing easy, stable, harmonized access to language resources and technology (LRT) in Europe, the Common Language Resource and Technology Infrastructure or CLARIN. A core technical pillar of this initiative is the Component Metadata Infrastructure, a distributed system for creating and providing metadata for LRT in a coherent harmonized way. The outcome of this work, the Semantic Mapping Component, was conceived as one module within the infrastructure dedicated to overcome the semantic interoperability problem stemming from the heterogeneity of the resource descriptions, by harnessing the mechanisms of the semantic layer built-in into the core of the infrastructure.13

    Of Packel(n) (Parcel[s]), Nudel(n) (Noodel[s]), Knödel(n) (Dumpling[s]) and Lamperl(n) (Lam[b/p] [s]) – Noun Plurals of Singulars with Liquid l in Coda in Austrian German

This paper focuses on plurals of nouns with word final liquid l. The diminutive forms "Lamperl" (lamb, lamp), "Radl" (bicycle) and "Semmerl" (roll) are analyzed as examples in different orthographic forms. The main aim is to answer the following questions: Is there an opposition between the singular and plural forms or not? Are the plurals marked by -n or are they unmarked? The Austrian Media Corpus served as a source for written Standard German and nonstandard German in Austria. In dealing with the examples we show useful steps for successful solving such kinds of linguistic questions when using media corpora

Slovensko in slovaško paremiologijo primerjamo s pomočjo Ďurčeve tipologije frazeoloških ustreznic in medjezikovnih suprasemantičnih razlik. Pogostnost slovenskih enot in njihovih slovaških ustreznic smo preverili v jezikovnih korpusih. Razmišljamo, kako so tipi suprasemantičnih razlik medsebojno povezani.Slovene and Slovak paremiology are compared with the help of Ďurčos typology of phraseological equivalents and interlingual suprasemantic differences. The basis for the comparison is the paremiological minimum of the most well-known Slovene proverbs, which was determined with a demographic survey. The frequency of the Slovene units and their Slovak equivalents were checked in language corpora. The study also explores how different types of suprasemantic differences are interconnected
