PHONOLOGICAL AND MORPHONOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION ON THE SPEECH OF KRUŠEVO
U radu se analizira govor Kruševa, mjesta smještenoga u zadarskom zaleđu. Obrađuju se pojedine fonološke i morfološke jezične posebnosti. Analiza je pokazala da govor Kruševa pripada zapadnom, odnosno novoštokavskom ikavskom dijalektu. Snimka kruševačkoga govora snimljenoga diktafonom u travnju i kolovozu 2009. godine, poslužila je kao polazište za analizu.The speech of Kruševo, a small town near Zadar, is analysed in this paper. Specific phonological and morphological linguistic characteristics are explained. The analysis showed that the speech of Kruševo can be classified as a western, new štokavian and ikavian dialect. The analysis was based on the recording of Kruševo speech in April and August 2009
DETERMINANTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN THE WEST HERZEGOVINA CANTON
A study of COVID-19 infected patients was conducted regarding to organic and psychological characteristics. The findings of
the study indicate that in the period of the pandemic in 2020, a total of 78 infection cases were confirmed in West Herzegovina
Canton. Of the total number of infected, 55.1% are women and 44.9% are men. Of the infected population, 16.7% were hospitalized.
By monitoring the COVID-19 disease in West Herzegovina Canton, we conclude how all manifestations of the disease were
represented, from asymptomatic, through mild respiratory to the most severe clinical picture with fatal outcomes. The mortality rate in West Herzegovina Canton is 5.1%. The study showed that a total of 28.2% of COVID-19 positive patients before infecting with virus, were most likely to suffer from hypertension, diabetes and malignancies. Furthermore, it is important to emphasize that a total of 71.9% of those infected are without underlying diseases. Also, the results indicate that people with COVID-19 in addition to the characteristic symptoms of the disease (fever, fatigue, cough, etc.) had certain mental ailments such as decreased general mood, increased anxiety, panic attacks, acute stress disorder and others
Comparison of the effect of the amino acids on spontaneous formation and transformation of calcium phosphates
Understanding the effect that specific amino acids (AA) exert on calcium phosphate (CaPs) formation is proposed as a way of providing deeper insight into CaPs’ biomineralization and enabling the design of tailored-made additives for the synthesis of functional materials. Despite a number of investigations, the role of specific AA is still unclear, mostly because markedly different experimental conditions have been employed in different studies. The aim of this paper was to compare the influence of different classes of amino acids, charged (aspartic acid, Asp and lysine, Lys), polar (asparagine, Asn and serine, Ser) and non-polar (phenylalanine, Phe) on CaPs formation and transformation in conditions similar to physiological conditions. The precipitation process was followed potentiometrically, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic spectroscopy (EPR), scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used for the characterization of precipitates. Except for Phe, all investigated AAs inhibited amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) transformation, with Ser being the most efficient inhibitor. In all systems, ACP transformed in calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CaDHA). However, the size of crystalline domains was affected, as well as CaDHA morphology. In EPR spectra, the contribution of different radical species with different proportions in diverse surroundings, depending on the type of AA present, was observed. The obtained results are of interest for the preparation of functionalized CaPs’, as well as for the understanding of their formation in vivo
Fate and transformation of silver nanoparticles in different biological conditions
The exploitation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in biomedicine represents more than one third of their overall application. Despite their wide use and significant amount of scientific data on their effects on biological systems, detailed insight into their in vivo fate is still lacking. This study aimed to elucidate the biotransformation patterns of AgNPs following oral administration. Colloidal stability, biochemical transformation, dissolution, and degradation behaviour of different types of AgNPs were evaluated in systems modelled to represent biological environments relevant for oral administration, as well as in cell culture media and tissue compartments obtained from animal models. A multimethod approach was employed by implementing light scattering (dynamic and electrophoretic) techniques, spectroscopy (UV–vis, atomic absorption, nuclear magnetic resonance) and transmission electron microscopy. The obtained results demonstrated that AgNPs may transform very quickly during their journey through different biological conditions. They are able to degrade to an ionic form and again reconstruct to a nanoparticulate form, depending on the biological environment determined by specific body compartments. As suggested for other inorganic nanoparticles by other research groups, AgNPs fail to preserve their specific integrity in in vivo settings
Precipitation of Calcium Phosphates and Calcium Carbonates in the Presence of Differently Charged Liposomes
Liposomes (lipid vesicles) are often considered to be a versatile tool for the synthesis of ad-vanced materials, as they allow various control mechanisms to tune the materials’ properties. Among diverse materials, the synthesis of calcium phosphates (CaPs) and calcium carbonates (CaCO3) using liposomes has attracted particular attention in the development of novel (bio)materials and biomineralization research. However, the preparation of materials using liposomes has not yet been fully exploited. Most of the liposomes used have been anionic and/or zwitterionic, while data on the influence of cationic liposomes are limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate and compare the influence of differently charged liposomes on CaPs and CaCO3 formation. Zwitterionic 1, 2-dimyristoyl-sn- glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC), negatively charged 1, 2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L- serine (DMPS), and positively charged 1, 2- dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-ethylphosphocholine (EPC) lipids were used to prepare the respective liposomes. The presence of liposomes during the spontaneous precipitation of CaPs and CaCO3 affected both the precipitation and transformation kinetics, as well as the morphol-ogy of the precipitates formed. The most prominent effect was noted for both materials in the presence of DMPS liposomes, as (nano) shell structures were formed in both cases. The obtained results indicate possible strategies to fine-tune the precipitation process of CaPs and CaCO3, which may be of interest for the production of novel materials
Precipitation at room temperature as a fast and versatile method for calcium phosphate/TiO2 nanocomposites synthesis
The constantly growing need for advanced bone regeneration materials has motivated the development of calcium phosphates (CaPs) composites with a different metal or metal-oxide nanomaterials and their economical and environmentally friendly production. Here, two procedures for the synthesis of CaPs composites with TiO2 nanoplates (TiNPl) and nanowires (TiNWs) were tested, with the immersion of TiO2 nanomaterials (TiNMs) in corrected simulated body fluid (c-SBF) and precipitation of CaP in the presence of TiNMs. The materials obtained were analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering, and their hemocompatibility and ability to induce reactive oxygen species were evaluated. After 28 days of immersion in c-SBF, no significant CaP coating was formed on TiNMs. However, the composites with calcium-deficient apatite (CaDHA) were obtained after one hour in the spontaneous precipitation system. In the absence of TiNMs, CaDHA was also formed, indicating that control of the CaP phase formed can be accomplished by fine-tuning conditions in the precipitation system. Although the morphology and size of crystalline domains of CaDHA obtained on the different nanomaterials differed, no significant difference was detected in their local structure. Composites showed low reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and did not induce hemolysis. The results obtained indicate that precipitation is a suitable and fast method for the preparation of CaPs/TiNMs nanocomposites which shows great potential for biomedical applications
