The Icelandic version of the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2) was administered to a sample of ,-130 women and 130 men between the ages of 20 and 70. Means and standard deviations of most of the clinical scales corresponded well to US norms. The same was found for the content scales and the principal supplementary scales. It is concluded that it is justified to use the US norms until reliable Icelandic norms have been collected

Research indicates that people with schizophrenia experience considerable cognitive deficits. These deficits appear to become more troublesome with increasing age, but this has been debated. The aim of this research was to better understand the age related cognitive deficits of Icelandic subjects with schizophrenia in comparison to healthy individuals. Cognition of individuals 18 to 64 years of age was evaluated with 10 neuropsychological tests. People with schizophrenia performed significantly worse on all tests, as expected, indicating widespread cognitive deficits compared to healthy individuals, independent of age. Furthermore, the results suggest that people with schizophrenia follow a similar age-related trajectory of cognitive decline as healthy individuals. Overall, we conclude that the cognitive difficulties often experienced by older people with schizophrenia are better explained by lower cognitive function at the time of diagnosis than by faster cognitive decline with increasing age

Bottom Trawling and Scallop Dredging in the Arctic : Impacts of fishing on non-target species, vulnerable habitats and cultural heritage

This project has been developed within the frame of the Nordic Action Plan 2000-2004 (Nord 1999:29) to review the status and threats of the natural and cultural heritage in Arctic waters. Two of the most commonly used demersal fishing gears in the Arctic are the otter trawl and the scallop dredge. Detrimental effects of bottom gear towed over the seabed include incidental catch and direct mortality of a wide range of organisms and habitat alteration. Any three-dimensional fragile structures rising above the seabed, such as cold-water corals, sponges, geological formations and archaeological remains are easily destroyed. This report reviews the scallop and shrimp fisheries, the distribution and conservation of vulnerable habitats (coral reefs, sponge communities), the status of archaeological remains on the seabed and relevant legislation and the conservation measures and role of protected areas. In addition there are two case studies based on fisheries and survey data from Iceland and recommendations to improve the current situation
