The role of drains in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery Is it necessary?

Using drains after AIS surgery increases hospital stay duration, blood transfusion rate and patients' anxiety of drain tube removal. Thus, closed suction drainage may not be suitable after AIS surgery

Relationship between retinal sensitivity and disease activity in patients with psoriasis vulgaris

OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis is a hyperproliferative chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology and ocular structures and visual pathways can also be affected during the course of this disease. Subclinical optic neuritis has previously been observed in psoriatic patients in visual evoked potential studies. This trial was designed to evaluate retinal sensitivity in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. METHODS: A total of 40 eyes of 40 patients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis and 40 eyes of 40 age- and sex-matched control subjects were included in this study. The diagnosis of psoriasis was confirmed by skin biopsy. The severity was determined using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index and the duration of the disease was recorded. After a full ophthalmological examination, including tests for color vision and pupil reactions, the visual field of each subject was assessed using both standard achromatic perimetry and short wavelength automated perimetry. RESULTS: The mean Psoriasis Area and Severity Index was 22.05±6.40′. There were no significant differences in the visual field parameters of subjects versus controls using either method. There were correlations between disease severity and the mean deviations in standard achromatic perimetry and short wavelength automated perimetry and between disease severity and the corrected pattern standard deviation and pattern standard deviation of short wavelength automated perimetry (r = -0.363, r = -0.399, r = 0.515 and r = 0.369, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Retinal sensitivity appears to be affected by the severity of psoriasis vulgaris

Is pharmacological anticoagulant prophylaxis necessary for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery?

Our current study claims that chemoprophylaxis is not necessary for the patients without risk factors after AIS surgery. Early mobilization and mechanoprophylaxis represents adequate prophylaxis in addition to pain management and well hydration in patients' routine treatment. The complications of chemoprophylaxis are not correlated to the initiation time of prophylaxis

Aim:The aim of the present study was to determine levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), malondialdehyde and some biochemical parameters in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) compared with healthy pregnant women, and to evaluate the relationships among these parameters.Materials and Methods:The patients consisted of 56 pregnant with GDM. The control group consisted of 60 healthy pregnant women. Plasma malondialdehyde, blood glucose, insulin, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and LDL-cholesterol were measured by biochemical methods. The concentrations of serum Fe, Cu and Zn were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results:The levels of blood glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and LDL-cholesterol, levels of plasma malondialdehyde, levels of serum Fe and Cu in women with GDM group were found higher than those in healthy pregnant women. However, levels of serum Zn were significantly lower in GDM pregnants than those in the healthy pregnant women. There were significant negative correlations between LDL-cholesterol and Cu levels of GDM subjects. Additionally, there were significant negative correlation between LDL-cholesterol and plasma malondialdehyde levels. However, there were significant positive correlations between serum Fe and plasma malondialdehyde levels. Conclusion:Our findings emphasize the significant deficiencies of Zn levels and the significant elevation of malondialdehyde, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in women with GDM. Therefore, supplementation with Zn element involved in the antioxidative system may increase antioxidative enzyme activities, and consequently, an improvement in fetal and maternal complications may be expected

Oxidative status in the lungs associated with tobacco smoke exposure

Conclusions: TS exposure affected the balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant capacity of lungs. Preventing environmental TS exposure might decrease oxidative damage. Increased levels of 8-OHdG and SOD levels could be assessed as an early sign of airway damage

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of balneotherapy which includes mud pack therapy in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS). Material and Methods: 29 patients (23 females, 6 males) with shoulder pain for more than three months who were diagnosed as SIS were included in this study. The mean age was 48.24 +/- 6.83 (33-60) years. Mud pack therapy was applied at 45 degrees C for 30 minutes, and the therapy continued once a day, for 15 days. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores for pain evaluation during rest, activity and night, and Constant, UCLA and Shoulder Disability Questionnaire (SDQ) scoring for the functional situation were used as outcome measurements. All patients were instructed to perform Codman's pendulum, passive strengthening and range of motion (ROM) exercises as home exercises during the study. Besides, the patients took paracetamol when needed. Results: All parameters were evaluated three times (before therapy, after therapy and at the end of third month). VAS, Constant, UCLA Score, SDQ scores were improved significantly. Conclusion: We concluded that balneotherapy can be safely applied for patients with SIS because it gives satisfactory results in early period and improves the quality of life for these patients
