Making Yogurt: A Practical Study to Develop an Understanding of Useful Bacteria

This study aims for students to comprehend the beneficial functions of bacteria with the traditional home yogurt leavening activity. Also, it aims to identify alternative concepts related to leavening and contribute to students' home yogurt consumption habits. The study is a case study. The study was conducted with 29 fifth-grade students studying at a public school in Istanbul in the 2019-2020 academic year and their parents. Questionnaire forms and student observation forms developed by the researchers were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were described by content analysis. Before the application, the participant students were given these three statements; microbes as a sample of microscopic creatures, yeast fungi caused yogurt formation, and yogurt is healthy because it was a dairy product. While after the application, participant students changed their statements to these three; the term microbe was not used as a sample of microscopic creatures, bacteria took part in the formation of yogurt, and yogurt is healthy because it contains microscopic creatures beneficial for the digestive system. Awareness of Habitat Fragmentation in Gifted Students: Musical Chair Game

DergiPark: 629414trakyasobedBu araştırmanın amacı “müzikli sandalye” isimli eğitsel oyun aracılığıyla özel yetenekli öğrencilere habitat kavramını öğretmek ve habitatlarda gerçekleşen bozulmaların canlılar üzerine etkilerine yönelik farkındalık oluşturmaktır. Araştırma nitel araştırma desenlerinden “örnek olay çalışmasına” göre yürütülürken, araştırmanın katılımcılarını 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılı güz döneminde “Bilim ve Sanat Merkezleri” ne kayıtlı 10-14 yaş aralığında 25 özel yetenekli öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri üç açık uçlu sorudan oluşan “yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu” (Yılmaz, Çimen, Karakaya, amp; Adıgüzel, 2019) aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde “içerik analizi yöntemi” kullanılmıştır. “Müzikli sandalye” etkinliği katılımcıların aktif olarak katılım sağladığı bir eğitsel oyundur. Bu oyun aracılığıyla katılımcıların habitatlardaki bozulmaların etkilerini fark etmeleri amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, katılımcıların oyunda yer alan materyaller ile habitat kavramı arasında ilişki kurabildikleri ve oyun sürecinde yaşanan olaylardan yola çıkarak habitat parçalanmalarının canlıların üzerine etkisini tespit edebildikleri belirlenmiştir. Katılımcılar habitat bozulmalarını önlemek için habitatların korunması veya yok edilmemesi, av - avcı ilişkisinin düzenlenmesi ve av - avcı avlanmasının yasaklanmasını önermişlerdir. The aim of this research is to teach the concept of habitat to gifted students through the musical chair educational game and to create awareness about the effects of habitat degradation on living things. The research was designed according to the case study of qualitative research methods. Participants of the study consisted of 25 special gifted students between the ages of 10-14 registered to the Science and Art Centers in the fall semester of 2018-2019 academic year. The data of this research were collected through “a semi-structured interview form consisting of three open-ended questions” (Yilmaz, et al., 2019). “Content analysis method” was used for data analysis. "Musical chair" activity is an educational game in which participants actively participate. The aim of this game is to make participants aware of the effects of deterioration in habitats. As a result of the research, it was determined that participants could establish a relationship between the materials in the game and the concept of habitat. In addition, it was determined that the effects of habitat fragmentation on living things could be determined through the events in the game process. In order to prevent habitat fragmentation, the participants suggested that to protection or non-destruction of habitats, to regulation of prey - hunter relationship, and to prohibition of hunting prey - hunter
