The performance of a poly(carboxylate ether) (PCE)-based superplasticizer to enable the machining of green bodies that are solid cast from suspensions of alumina was investigated. An alumina loading of 35 vol% in the presence of 1.25 wt% superplasticizer was established to be suitable for lathing and removal of significant amount of material through drilling. A reduction of 77% in the diameter of green bodies that corresponds to a 59% reduction in volume was achieved. The lathed green bodies exhibited smooth terraces without visible cracks. All of the green bodies were sintered without a polymer burnout step

Cataloged from PDF version of article. The primary aim of this study is to find out language instructors’ attitudes towards holistic and analytic assessment of speaking. The secondary aim is to investigate whether the scores assigned by using holistic and analytic assessment tools differed or not. Finally, this study sets out to reveal whether the scores assigned by using holistic and analytic assessment tools differed or not according to instructors’ background. The research was conducted at the School of Foreign Languages, Erciyes University with twenty four language instructors between December 2014 and April 2015. An attitude questionnaire and holistic and analytic assessment tools were used to collect data. The findings showed that the instructors in this study had different attitudes towards holistic and analytic assessment of speaking, and their advantages and disadvantages for assessment. While instructors did not have a negative attitude towards analytic assessment of speaking, they displayed a more positive attitude towards holistic assessment. Also, as a whole, the speaking exam scores assigned by holistic and analytic assessment tools did not differ. Scores were found to differ only when instructors’ years of experience was considered for scores obtained by holistic assessment. For other variables examined, there scores did not statistically differ according to the background of the instructors. In the light of this study’s findings, it can be suggested that allowing instructors to choose between holistic and analytic assessment tools of their own preference may be considered for further educational purposes.Özbay, CerenM.S

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 53-63).Thesis (M.S.): Bilkent University, M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, 2015.Every student needs to be provided a certain minimum level of acquisition in the education system. Hence, this study investigated differences in students’ performance in mathematics, reading and science literacy among the school types and geographical regions in Turkey by using PISA 2012 data. In this research, MANOVA was employed using Multivariate Linear Model procedure of SPSS. The aims of the research were to examine if there are any differences among Turkish students’ performance that live in different geographical regions in Turkey in terms of mathematics, reading and science literacy and also to examine whether there are any differences among Turkish students’ performance in mathematics, reading and science with respect to the school types or not. Analyses of the current study based on PISA 2012 data showed that Turkish students’ performance in mathematics, reading and science differed significantly across the geographical regions and school types. The major difference was observed among school types.by Ceren ÖzbayM.S
