OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) might cause right ventricular dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. We aimed to determine the effects of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on right ventricular myocardial performance index (MPI) in OSA patients without hypertension. METHODS: 49 subjects without hypertension, diabetes mellitus, any cardiac and pulmonary disease had overnight polysomnography and echocardiography. In 18 moderate-severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 15) patients, right ventricular free wall diameter (RVFWD) was measured by M-mode, and right ventricular MPI was calculated as (isovolumic contraction time+ isovolumic relaxation time) / pulmonary ejection time using Doppler at baseline and after 6 months CPAP therapy. RESULTS: Mean age was 46.5 ± 4.9 year. Patients had high body mass index (BMI: 30.6 ± 4,0 kg/m(2)), but there was no change in either BMI or blood pressures after 6 months. Right ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic diameters were in normal limits at baseline, and did not change after CPAP usage. Baseline RVFWD (7.1 ± 2.1 mm) significantly decreased after CPAP therapy (6.2 ± 1.7 mm, p < 0.001). 15 of patients (83%) had right ventricular diastolic dysfunction at baseline, and it was completely improved in 11 of them (73%) by CPAP usage. Right ventricular global dysfunction was shown in 11 patients (61%) with a high MPI (62.2 ± 9.3%) at baseline; and MPI was significantly decreased after CPAP therapy (47.3 ± 8.4%, p < 0.0001), and it was completely corrected in 4 of them (36%). CONCLUSION: CPAP therapy significantly decreases RVFWD and improves right ventricular diastolic and global functions (MPI) in OSA patients without hypertension

In this study, a He-Ne laser is used as a light source, Michelson interferometer and interference fringe counter have been built. By changing the optical path lenght of the light in the interferometer we have determined the wave-length of He-Ne laser light. The interference was observed and the bright bands which passes consecutive from the interference fringe counter were counted (N). Using the equation 21=NX, the wave-length of the light was measured from the path difference between the two arms. As a result of this and with the help of the equation NX=2L(nx-l) between wave-length and refractive index of the gas in the tube was found, where L is the tube length

The power absorption and the penetration depth of electromagnetic radiation in lead telluride under cyclotron resonance conditions

Cyclotron resonance absorption in n- and p-type PbTe was observed by Nii and was analysed under classical skin effect conditions. When the values of DC magnetic field corresponding to peaks are plotted against the held directions, a close fit is obtained between the calculated and observed results based on the assumption of a [111] ellipsoids of revolution model for the both conduction and valance band extrema. From the best fit m(t) = 0.024m(0) and 0.03m(0) for the transverse effective masses and K = m(1)/m(t) = 9.8 and 12.2 for the anisotropic mass rations are obtained for the conduction and valance band, respectively. The observed absorption curve shows weak structures at low magnetic field. They are supposed to be due to second harmonics of Azbel'-Kaner cyclotron resonance. However, it turns out to be unnecessary to introduce other bands to explain the experimental results. The applicability of the classical magneto-optical theory is examined by calculating the power absorption coefficient and penetration depth as a function of DC magnetic field

İn Horticulture Supervisor Prof. Dr. Uygun AKSOY October 1998,47 pages The researchwork aimed at determining the possibility of propagating fig cv. Sanlop through shoot-tip and meristem cultures and conditions to provide a better adaptation of the obtained plantiets. Planlets were obtained by meristem and shoot-tip cultures, multiplied by nodium culture and then their rooting performance was tested at four different media. As the growing medium, the basic Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium was used In order to maintain acclimatisation, rooted plants were transferred to the following media: 100 % Peat, 100 % Perlite, Peat+Perfite (1:1) and Peat+Perlhe+Soil (1:1:1) mixtures. At the final stage, the plants were transferred to soil. According to the research findings, shoot-tip cultures seemed to be more advantageous compared to meristem culture. The highest performance was obtained in explains taken in June. At the beginning of the study, both the solid and the liquid media were tested, however, due to the difficulty in overcoming the infections and the higher rate of callus formation, former tests were carried out only on liquid media. Among the tested media, the highest number of roots were found in medhim-C (1/2 MS + 1 ppm DBA). On the other hand, the longest roots were obtained in medium-A (MS + 1 ppm IBA).

OBJECTIVE: To assess morphologic features of the pre-chiasmatic sulcus (PS) in Chiari malformation type I (CM-I).-METHODS: Computed tomography images were ob-tained in patients with CM-1 (mean age: 21.26 & PLUSMN; 16.46 years; sex: 25 females and 17 males) and 58 healthy control subjects (mean age: 28.12 & PLUSMN; 22.60 years; sex: 29 females and 29 males). The following parameters were measured to determine the anatomy of the PS: planum length, sulcal length, sulcal angle (SA), and interoptic distance. Consid-ering sulcal length and SA measurements, 4 types of PS were identified: narrow-steep-groove (NSG), narrow-flat -groove (NFG), wide-steep-groove, and wide-flat-groove.-RESULTS: SA was greater in the CM-I group (32.80 & PLUSMN; 18.21 & DEG;) compared with the control group (23.05 & PLUSMN; 14.53 & DEG;) (P = 0.004), but the other parameters were similar in both groups. Distribution ranking of PS types was as follows: NFG (31%) > NSG (26.20%) > wide-steep-groove (23.80%) > wide-flat-groove (19%) in the CM-I group; wide-flat-groove (37.90%) > wide-steep-groove (20.70%) = NFG (20.70%) = NSG (20.70%) in the control group. Distribution rate of PS types relative to both groups showed that the classification system was not affected by CM-I (P = 0.226).-CONCLUSIONS: SA value was approximately 25% greater in the CM-I group than in the control group; thus, CM-I patients had more vertical groove. The percentage of narrow-type (NSG D NFG) PS in the CM-I group was higher than in the control group

    No full text
Objective: Sarcoidosis is a complex chronic disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by non-caseating granulomas. Lung and lymph node involvement is most common; however, various kidney function disorders may occur in these patients. This study aimed to investigate kidney and rarely assessed features in patients with sarcoidosis. Methods: This study evaluated pulmonary sarcoidosis patients aged 18 years and over, who presented to the nephrology outpatient clinic of SBU Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. In addition to the general sarcoidosis parameters, serum 25(OH)D level, tubular functions, and aortic arch calcification were also investigated. Results: Our study included 105 patients, of whom 74 (70.5%) were females and 31 (29.5%) were males. The mean age was 46.78 ± 12.54 years. The history of nephrolithiasis was present in 21 (20%) and aortic calcification was determined in 18 (17.1%) patients. The 25(OH)D level was below 20 ng/mL in 75 (71.4%) patients, and 21 (20%) patients were hypercalcemic. Smoking history was determined in 24 (22.9%) patients, and 25(OH)D levels (cut-off 20 ng/mL) were higher in smokers than non-smokers. Additionally, a rare finding of asymptomatic renal tubular acidosis was detected in 4 (3.8%) patients. The 24-hour urine calcium excretion was >250 mg/day in 27 (25.7%) patients, and 40 (38.1%) patients were hypercalcemic and/or hypercalciuric. Conclusion: Our study revealed a low 25(OH)D level. The incidence of aortic arch calcification as a possible marker of atherosclerosis was also higher than expected and the frequency was higher in patients with higher 25(OH)D levels. As a rarely examined entity in patients with sarcoidosis, renal tubular acidosis type I was detected in 4 patients. Beyond classical kidney findings other features should be analyzed in sarcoidosis

Thermoluminescence properties of annealed natural quartz after beta irradiation

    No full text
Here we investigated the effects of annealing, heating rate and fading (after annealing at 800 degrees C) on the thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of natural quartz (NQ). All of the samples were annealed at different temperatures between 100 degrees C and 800 degrees C and then irradiated with a beta dose of about 34 Gray (Gy), in order to determine the effects of annealing treatments on TL peaks of natural quartz. TL glow curves of the samples were recorded. It was observed that the intensities of TL peaks were strongly sensitive to annealing temperatures at 800 degrees C. The heating rate and fading effect of TL peaks of natural quartz were examined for the annealed samples at 800 degrees C for 30 min. It was observed that the intensities of the TL peaks were differently affected from heating rate and fading. Additionally, TL kinetic parameters (activation energy, frequency factor and order of kinetics) of all peaks were determined for annealed samples using a computerized glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) method and Mathematica software.
