    Pronominal Choice as an Interpersonal Strategy

    This paper offers a review of the main aspects of address theory and examines the main interpersonal strategic functions of terms of address. In order to illustrate these issues I have chosen some examples from political discourse. Specifically, I selected three political interviews which took place around the same time (21st April 2003, 16th November 2003 and 30th May 2004), and with the same worldwide conflict in the background (the Iraqi war), but which featured three different interviewees of three different nationalities. Nonetheless, these interviewees share a common characteristic: they held the highest political office in their countries at the time. These interviewees are: Mr. José M. Aznar (President of Spain), Mr. George W. Bush (President of the USA) and Mr. Tony Blair (Prime Minister of the UK). I will try to relate the choice of specific pronominal references to the pragmatic nature of the questions being asked.     Redundancy in parliamentary political discourse

    This paper is aimed at analysing the use of redundancy in Oral Questions in the Andalusian Parliament. The corpus is made up of 12 oral questions raised by the two main political parties at the Committee for Equality and Social Welfare. Six questions were raised by men and six by women. The study focuses on the identification of the most relevant functions of redundancy, as well as on the analysis of gender differences and differences between the two main political parties.     Kernel arquitecture for CAD/CAM in shipbuilding enviroments

    The capabilities of complex software products such as CAD/CAM systems are strongly supported by basic information technologies related with data management, visualization, communication, geometry modeling and others related with the development process. These basic information technologies are involved in a continuous evolution process, but over recent years this evolution has been dramatic. The main reason for this has been that new hardware capabilities (including graphic cards) are available at very low cost, but also a contributing factor has been the evolution of the prices of basic software. To take advantage of these new features, the existing CAD/CAM systems must undergo a complete and drastic redesign. This process is complicated but strategic for the future evolution of a system. There are several examples in the market of how a bad decision has lead to a cul-de-sac (both technically and commercially). This paper describes what the authors consider are the basic architectural components of a kernel for a CAD/CAM system oriented to shipbuilding. The proposed solution is a combination of in-house developed frameworks together with commercial products that are accepted as standard components. The proportion of in-house frameworks within this combination of products is a key factor, especially when considering CAD/CAM systems oriented to shipbuilding. General-purpose CAD/CAM systems are mainly oriented to the mechanical CAD market. For this reason several basic products exist devoted to geometry modelling in this context. But these basic products are not well suited to deal with the very specific geometry modelling requirements of a CAD/CAM system oriented to shipbuilding. The complexity of the ship model, the different model requirements through its short and changing life cycle and the many different disciplines involved in the process are reasons for this inadequacy. Apart from these basic frameworks, specific shipbuilding frameworks are also required. This second layer is built over the basic technology components mentioned above.     Towards precision SZ cluster cosmology: from Planck to the Simons Observatory

    As demonstrated by Planck, SPT, and ACT, the abundance of Sunyaev-Zeldovich-detected galaxy clusters across mass and redshift is a powerful cosmological probe. Upcoming experiments such as the Simons Observatory (SO) will detect over an order of magnitude more objects than what previous experiments have found, thereby providing an unprecedented constraining potential. However, in order for this potential to be realised, the cluster detection and analysis pipelines will have to be built and understood to a much higher level of accuracy than has been demonstrated to date. Here we discuss ongoing efforts towards the accurate modelling of tSZ cluster counts, focusing on several improvements regarding optimisation bias, covariance estimation, and foreground deprojection, which are implemented in the publicly-available SZiFi package. Next, we briefly discuss the application of these improved cluster detection methods to Planck data.     El objetivo de este artículo es esbozar algunas de las líneas fundamentales en las que creo que debería adentrarse una filosofía de las cosas de inspiración heideggeriana. A partir del análisis del desarrollo que Heidegger hace en «El origen de la obra de arte» de las nociones de «mundo» y «tierra» como el horizonte desde el que debemos pensar las cosas, el trabajo trata de hacer frente a algunas objeciones de autores contemporáneos que, como Bruno Latour, han criticado la escasa atención que el pensamiento de Heidegger presta a las cosas que conforman el mundo en que vivimos.The aim of this paper is to sketch some of the basic directions that a philosophy of things inspired in Heidegger’s thought should explore. It will discuss some objections that a contemporary author like Bruno Latour has posed to Heidegger, suggesting that he hasn’t paid sufficient attention to the particular things that shape the world in which we live. To this effect, it will consider Heidegger’s development of the notions of «world» and «earth» as the horizon from where we should understand the being of thing
