End this depression now!: A review of Paul Krugman's book

This paperback version of the Nobel-Prize winning economist Paul Krugman’s New York Times’ best-seller book reviews if the findings in hardcover version remained well-founded after major political and economic actions (US elections, European austerity measures), and it seemed that the essential message remained unchanged. Krugman aims to answer primarily not how the 2008 crisis happened but what to do to recover and how to avoid similar cases in the future. First of all we must use our knowledge of previous depressions, then accept that we are in a depression and take the proper steps: job creation instead of austerity

Is discrepancy between confidence and spending driven by pessimism or by high aspriations? — Review of the discrepancy between the admitted financial situation and actual spending in Hungary

The opinions of people are expected to forecast their actions, and even major economic institutions rely on this correlation. This research paper examines a case when the opinion of people about their financial situation contradicts their financial-related actions. In 2012 in Hungary the general opinion of people about their financial situation was showing the lowest confidence in the world, with a significant declining trend, reaching an extremely low level. Although the general expectation would be that this pessimism triggers a set-back in consumer spending, figures show that Hungarians were on the other end of the scale regarding their expenditures and were greatly increasing their spending. This raises the question: why do people say they are in such a tough financial situation yet instead of saving they increase their spending? This paper presents a cross-country analysis that reviews the severity of this discrepancy, as well as proves the validity of the question by excluding several alternative explanations, followed by a recommendation and hypotheses for a detailed research to explain the phenomenon

A büntetőeljárás egyszerűsítése és gyorsítása = Reduction and acceleration in the Criminal Procedure Law

A 2005-ös évben mind a szűkebb kutatási területemen (a büntetőeljárás gyorsítása és egyszerűsítése), mind a komplex büntető eljárásjogi ismeretek terén fontos kutatómunkát végeztem. Az év során lehetőségem nyílt több külföldi egyetemen is kutatómunkát végezni. Némelyiket az OTKA támogatásból finanszíroztam, más részüket a PTE, azon belül is az Állam- és Jogtudományi Kar fedezte. A külföldi kutatások (Pozsony, München, Vilnius, Graz, Prága, Firenze stb.) eredményeképpen igen gazdag anyag gyűlt össze az OTKA kutatáshoz. A külföldön végzett kutatásnak konkrét eredményei is születtek, többek között ez tette lehetővé a 2005. évben megjelent 8 idegen nyelvű és egy magyar nyelvű tanulmány elkészítését. Ezek jó része közvetlenül a kutatási területhez kapcsolódik, más részük annak egyes részkérdéseit érinti. Az eredeti munkaterv szerint 2006. évben kell sort keríteni egy összefoglaló monográfia elkészítésére. Ez várhatóan 2006. év végén fog megjelenni és a kutatási területnek megfelelően a büntetőeljárás gyorsítása, azon belül is különösen a vádalkus eljárás a témája. Összességében a kutatást eredményesnek ítélem meg, különös tekintettel arra, hogy a fent említett tanulmányokon felül Gazdasági büntetőeljárás címmel egyetemi tananyagot is írtam (amely szintén nagyban koncentrál az egyszerűsítés és gyorsítás kérdéskörére). | In the year 2005, I performed important research work both in my specific area of research (quickening and simplifying the criminal procedure) and in the field of complex criminal procedures. I had possibility during the year to do research at a few foreign universities. Some of the researches were financed from OTKA support, some of them were financed by the PTE, more precisely the Faculty of Political Science and Law. As the result of the research abroad (Bratislava, Munich, Vilnius, Graz, Prague, Florence, etc,) I could collect a very rich material to the OTKA research. The research I did abroad had concrete results, this made possible among others the preparation of the 8 studies in foreign language and one study in Hungarian language published in 2005. Many of these are directly connected to the field of research some of them tackle certain partial issues thereof. According to the original work plan a summary monograph should be prepared in 2006. This will probably come out at the end of 2006 and the subject will be in harmony with the research field namely the quickening of the criminal procedures, within this the plea bargain procedure. I think that the research was successful as a whole, with special regard to the fact that in addition to the studies mentioned above I also wrote a university course book entitle Economic Criminal Procedure (which mostly focuses on the issue of quickening and simplifying)

In this book Dan Ariely follows the topic he started to discuss in his prior book, the Predictably Irrational: stating that there is logic and consistency behind irrational human thinking and actions. Ariely goes into more details and leads the general topic of irrationality through a narrow-down approach to the topic of cheating, one of the fields we could observe to work irrationally in some cases, and even within that to cheating within organizational environment
