Trends in genre analysis articles on scientific abstract structures: A Quantitative content analysis

    Get PDF
Genre analysis is a methodologically prominent approach to segmenting a scientific abstract into discourse units. Genre analysis studies on scientific abstract structures have valuable outputs not only for secondary information services, including bibliographic databases and online services but also for scientific communication and library and information science (LIS) education. However, trends of research on this topic have not been investigated yet. This study identifies research trends and reveals knowledge gaps and research opportunities in genre analysis articles on scientific abstracts. For this purpose, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched to identify the articles. According to the study selection criteria, 75 articles were included in the quantitative content analysis. It was found that the most frequently studied genres were research articles (73.3%), proceedings (%12), and thesis/dissertations (8%). The sample size of the corpus ranged from 5 to 4214 abstracts (M = 223.8, MD = 94, SD = 523.8). The authors most frequently cited for abstract genre models were Hyland, Swales, and Santos, respectively. In 18.7% of articles, at least one of the abstract standards was cited. Approximately, two-thirds of the articles were comparative. Languages (44.7%), disciplines (25.5%), genres, and native/non-native authors (8.5%) were compared most frequently. English was the most frequently studied language, both individual (72.4%) and comparatively (25.9%). The results of this study suggest that the LIS community, as well as applied linguistics, can seize the opportunity to address gaps in academic genres, disciplines, and languages. In addition, future studies are expected to have generalizable results to assist the scientific communication and LIS communities

Information institutions use text-based information retrieval systems to store, index and retrieve metadata, full-text, or both metadata and full-text (hybrid) contents. The aim of this research was to evaluate impact of these contents on information retrieval performance. For this purpose, metadata (MIR), full-text (FIR) and hybrid (HIR) content information retrieval systems were developed with default Lucene information retrieval model for a small scale Turkish corpus. In order to evaluate performance of this three systems, “precision - recall” and “normalized recall” tests were conducted. Experimental findings showed that there was no significant differences between MIR and FIR in mean average precision (MAP) performance. On the other hand, MAP performance of HIR was significantly higher in comparison to MIR and FIR. When information retrieval performance was evaluated as user-centered, the “normalized recall” performances of MIR and HIR were significantly higher than FIR. Additionally, there was no significant differences between the systems in retrieved relevant document means. Processing different types of contents such as metadata and full-text had some advantages and disadvantages for information retrieval systems in terms of term management. The advantages brought together in hybrid content processing (HIR) and information retrieval performance improved. [There is an extended English summary at the end of the article.

The aim of this research was to assess the scientific impact of open access journals (OAJs). For this purpose, the descriptive method was used and research data were collected on Directory of Open Access Journal (DOAJ), Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and websites of open access journals, and statistically analyzed. According to data between JCR 2000 and 2015, the number of OAJs increased from 249 (4%) to 1,320 (12%) in 16 years. In this period, while the share of OAJs published by commercial publishers and universities increased from 23% to 42% and 20% to 22%, and civil society organizations (CSOs) and other types of publishers decreased from 36% to 26% and from 20% to 10%, respectively. Commercial publishers, CSOs, universities and other publishers charged article processing fees for OAJs by 79%, 46%, 31% and 17%, respectively. There was a significant relationship between open access publisher types and whether or not to charge article processing fees. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the article processing fee and the metrics, albeit varied by disciplines and metrics, and the metrics of OAJs that charged article processing fees were higher than those who did not. The metrics of OAJs increased significantly after 5, 10 and 15 years. Metrics of toll access journals were higher than OAJs, again, albeit varied by disciplines and metrics. It may be useful to increase the number of OAJs and to prioritize the value of individual researches rather than journal-level metrics in research assessment systems

The aim of this study is to perform a citation analysis of dissertations completed in Department of Information and Records Management of Istanbul University (DIRMIU) between 1967-2015 and to compare the results with those already done on this topic. For this purpose, completed dissertations in DIRMIU have been determined and data have been gathered from the general characteristics (number of pages, year, advisor and jury members) and references of dissertations. Citation analysis was carried out on the collected data. Additionally, the findings were compared with previous studies on dissertations of Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University (DIMHU) using comparative method. According to the key findings, a total of 120 dissertations were completed in DIRMIU, 91 of which are master’s thesis and 29 of which are doctoral thesis. The 23 advisors and 42 jury members were assigned in these dissertations. Hasan Sacit Keseroğlu, Meral Alpay and Aysel Yontar are among the leading members of the faculty WHO manage the dissertations most frequently. The most frequently used source types in the dissertations are books (50%) and electronic resources (31%). 69% of these sources are in Turkish and 31% are in other languages. A statistically significant relationship was identified between the types of the thesis and the types of sources and languages used in dissertations. Turkish Librarianship journal and Official Gazette of the Republic of Turkey are the most frequently cited periodicals. The most frequently cited people are Meral Alpay, Jale Baysal, Yasar Tonta, Hasan S. Keseroglu and Aysel Yontar. The half-life of the sources used is 8 years. As a result of the comparison made between DIRMIU and DIMHU, it is seen that the ratio of source type used is similar, the most frequently used periodicals are Turkish Librarianship journal and Official Gazette of the Republic of Turkey, and the half-life is between 8 and 9 years

Purpose: This study aims to conduct a citation analysis on master's theses completed at Çankırı Karatekin University, Department of Information and Records Management (ÇAKUDIRM). Method: Within the scope of the study, citation analysis was carried out on a total of 4,365 citation data (language of publication, type of source, author(s,) and half-life) collected manually from the bibliography section of 37 master's theses completed in ÇAKU-DIRM between 2017 and 2021. In addition, the number of pages, publication year, thesis advisors and jury members of the theses were also analysed. Findings: The most frequently cited information source types in theses were periodicals (36%), books (31%) and electronic publications (18%). The language of the cited sources was Turkish (67%), English (32%) and other languages (1%). The most frequently cited Turkish and English periodicals were Türk Kütüphaneciliği (Turkish Librarianship), Bilgi Dünyası (Information World), Resmi Gazete (Official Gazette), The Journal of Academic Librarianship, Library Trends, and Reference Services Review, respectively. Although varying by type of information source, the overall literature half-life was 9 years. Hüseyin Odabaş, Coşkun Polat, and Mehmet Ali Akkaya were the most frequently employed faculty members among a total of 7 advisors. The most frequently cited authors were Hüseyin Odabaş, Coşkun Polat, and Bülent Yılmaz, respectively. Implications: The results of this study are expected to be effective in developing and managing library collections in universities offering Information and Records Management graduate programs. In addition, this study reveals that the rate of English resource usage in the theses completed in the ÇAKU-DIRM program, which does not require a foreign language score at the stage of admission to the master's program, is higher than the theses in the Istanbul University DIRM program that require a foreign language score. Since the design and findings of this study are not suitable for making inferences about how foreign language resource use is realized, it is recommended to conduct an individual research on students' use of foreign language resources in graduate theses to develop institutional and national policies. Originality: In the literature, citation analysis has been done on the graduate theses of the Information and Records Management departments of universities in Turkey with a deeprooted history, such as Hacettepe, Istanbul and Ankara. On the other hand, ÇAKU-DIRM differs from the universities that were the subject of previous studies as it is young and does not require an English language score for admission to the master’s program

Bilimsel Elektronik Dergilerin Kullanımı: Türk Kütüphaneciliği Dergisinin İşlem Günlüğü Analizi / Usage of Scholarly Electronic Journals: Transaction Log Analysis of Turkish Librarianship Journal

English Abstract: The purpose of this study was to conduct a transactional log analysis on Turkish Librarianship (TL) journal’s web site. For this purpose, more than 165.000 visitors’ transaction data within three years (between July, 2010 and July, 2013) was obtained from Google Analytics and analyzed. The main findings showed that TL was a local journal. In addition to library and information science topics, general public and interdisciplinary topics were attracting more visitors. Visitors significantly preferred to download full-text documents rather than to display metadata. English Summary: Journal usage analysis is an important topic for authors/scholars, librarians and publishers for many years. When the literature on journal usage analysis reviewed, it is noteworthy that many analysis techniques have been developed and widely used to meet the needs of authors, publishers and librarians over time. Authors need these analyses for submitting their articles in appropriate journals by their quality or impact factor, librarians need them for collection development and publishers need it for benefit/profit. The purpose of this study was to conduct a transactional log analysis on Turkish Librarianship (TL) journal’s web site. For this purpose, after a brief literature review on development of electronic journals, their influences on stakeholders and journal usage analyses, more than 165.000 visitors’ transaction data within three years (between July 2010 and July 2013) was obtained from Google Analytics and analyzed. In light of the findings of this study, the following results and recommendations could be reached: • TL was visited 169.677 times and 715.897 pages viewed by 124.154 unique visitors. The average number of pages viewed per session was 4 and the average session duration was 198 seconds. TL was visited more in the academic semesters. • 96 percent of users visited the site from Turkey and its worldwide usage was limited. According to results TL was a local journal. The main reason could be the publication language which was mostly in Turkish. Adding English titles, abstracts and extended summaries to all types of documents (peer-reviewed articles, opinions, book review, meeting etc.) was not enough for increasing global visiting rate of TL. • Visitors significantly preferred to download full-text documents rather than to view metadata. On the other hand, there is a high positive correlation between full-text downloads and metadata views (especially abstracts). In decision process of document suitability for download or not, metadata could be evaluated by some of the visitors. • While the number of visitors coming to the site directly was very high, expected number of visitors coming from publisher’s web site was very low. Publisher’s (Turkish Librarians’ Association) web site should be revised in terms of usability. • In addition to library and information science topics, general public and interdisciplinary topics were attracting more visitors
