BACKGROUND: Painful shoulder is considered the most common complication of hemiplegic/parethic (H/P) stroke patients. It is a negative factor for neuromotor recovery. PURPOSE: To study the effects of kinesiotherapy treatment on shoulder pain prevention, and as a secondary endpoints, to analyze muscle strength of H/P shoulder looking at basic functional active mobility. METHOD: Twenty one inpatients (12 men, 9 women) aged 26 to 87 years, with post-stroke H/P were submitted to thirty minutes daily program kinesiotherapy, started at 48 hours post-stroke up to their hospital discharge. Patients were evaluated pre and post treatment according to the presence or absence of shoulder pain, movements and shoulder strength, and for presence or absence of basic functional movements. RESULTS: No patient complaining of shoulder pain at the hospital discharge (p<0.001). The muscle strength improved signifcantly for elevation, protusion, abduction and flexion of the shoulder (p<0.001). There was improvement also for functional mobility on moving from dorsal to lateral recumb, from lateral recumb to a seated position and in keeping the seated position (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Kinesiotherapy in acute phase of stroke prevented shoulder pain.CONTEXTO: Ombro doloroso é freqüente em pacientes com hemiplegia/hemiparesia (H/P) por acidente vascular encefálico (AVE), dificultando a recuperação neuromotora gerando incapacidade funcional. CONCLUSÃO: A cinesioterapia na fase aguda do AVE preveniu a dor no ombro H/P e favoreceu a recuperação motora.Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)Universidade de MaríliaFaculdade de Medicina de MaríliaUNIFESPSciEL

Effect of particle size in the TL response of natural quartz sensitized by high dose of gamma radiation and heat-treatments

This work investigates the effect of particle size in the thermoluminescence (TL) response of a quartz crystal that was initially crushed and classified into ten size fractions between 38 &#956;m and 5 mm. Aliquots of each size fraction were sensitized with a dose of 25 kGy of &#947; rays and heat-treatments at 400 °C. TL glow curves of sensitized and non-sensitized samples were recorded as a function of different test-doses of &#947; rays. For the non-sensitized samples, the TL peak near 325 °C increases with the decrease in particle size. In the case of sensitized samples, a strong TL peak near 300 °C increases with the increase in particle size up to mean grain size equal to 304 &#956;m. Above 304 &#956;m, an abrupt reduction in the TL intensity is noticed for the sensitized peak. These effects are discussed in relation to the specific surface area of quartz particles and the intensity of the electron paramagnetic resonance signal of the E'1 center induced by the sensitization process

Measurement of inclusive and differential cross sections for W+^{+}W^{-} production in proton-proton collisions at s= \sqrt{s} = 13.6 TeV

Measurements at s= \sqrt{s}= 13.6 TeV of the opposite-sign W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data used in this study were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.8 fb1 ^{-1} . Events are selected by requiring one electron and one muon of opposite charge. A maximum likelihood fit is performed on signal- and background-enriched data categories defined by the flavour and charge of the leptons, the number of jets, and number of jets originating from b quarks. An inclusive W+^{+}W^{-} production cross section of 125.7 ± \pm 5.6 pb is measured, in agreement with standard model predictions. Cross sections are also reported in a fiducial region close to that of the detector acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the jet multiplicity in the event. For first time in proton-proton collisions, WW events with at least two reconstructed jets are studied and compared with recent theoretical predictions.Measurements at s\sqrt{s} = 13.6 TeV of the opposite-sign W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions are presented.
