Comparison of the Heats of Formation of Hydrocarbons
In order to facilitate the demonstration of the structure dependent
stabilizing or destabilizing energy effects characterizing
the individual hydrocarbons it is suggested to replace graphite.
and hydrogen as reference substances (used in calculating the heats
of formation) by the series of n-alkanes. This can be achieved by
converting the heats of formation into relative enthalpies (HreJ).
The proposed simple equation yields zero for the Hrel of n-alkanes
and thus the extra stabilizing or destabilizing effects caused for
example by branching or unsaturation, respectively, in other types
of compounds are directly expressed by the numerical value of
their Hrel

Cultural value orientation analysis of a Hungarian educational institution: a case study
Stemming from personal interest, this exploratory case study (Creswell, 2007)
aimed to explore everyday cases of dissatisfaction such as the alleged lack of
respect towards teachers, and students’ unwillingness to study, or the differing
expectations of students, teachers and parents in a state secondary school in
Budapest, Hungary. The research was intended (1) to showcase situations where
expectations were ‘off’, and (2) to highlight the possible sources of misunderstandings
or problematic forms of behaviour. Thus, it set out to examine whether the complaints
of teachers and students could be analyzed in terms of cultural value orientation
theory (Hofstede, Hofstede & Minkov, 2010; Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner, 1998;
Hall, 1976; Furka, 2013), and if so, which dimensions were detectable. Data collection
involved the triangulation of data from questionnaires filled in by students (aged
14-18) and teachers in the same institution, as well as interviews with focus groups
and individual teachers. Data analysis applied the constant comparative method
of Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Creswell, 2007) for the interviews, and
general statistical procedures for the questionnaires. Results show that differences in
power distance and uncertainty avoidance in the stakeholders’ value systems might
be responsible for the dissatisfaction. If they are not addressed explicitly, such value
differences might lead to a decrease in performance output and job satisfaction, as
well as a deteriorating school image
An Empirical Formula Expressing the Mutual Dependence of C-C Bond Distances
An empirical formula is suggested to describe the mutuaJ
dependence of the length of the bonds formed by a central atom
in systems built up from equivalent carbon atoms, e.g. diamond,
graphite, the cumulene and polyyne chains and intermediate structures
between them. A geometrical representation of the relationship
is a regular tetrahedron. A point of this tetrahedron characterizes
the arrangement of the atoms around the central one. From
the position of the point the bond distances - and possibly the
bond angles - can be deduced
English Needs Assessment Survey for International Students of Technology at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary
Regular language instruction informed by needs assessment has been a widespread phenomenon in Teaching English as a Foreign language (EFL). In higher education (HE) institutions teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) based on research has also been a widely accepted trend. Nowadays the increasing number of international students in the Hungarian HE scenario has prompted faculties to support the development of students' language skills systematically. As one such institution, the Centre for Modern Languages (CML) at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) designed a questionnaire survey systematically to research the language needs of its international students of technology after having come across some anecdotal mismatches across faculties in the perception of the students' level of knowledge. International students of technology, their EFL teachers and their subject matter instructors were surveyed on how important they think certain language skills are for the students to succeed in the academic scenario. The results show that skills such as identifying main points in texts, summarising information in speech and in writing, or asking for clarification - all of pertain to the recognition or formation of structural elements in written and spoken texts - are seen as most important by the stakeholders. The results now inform the refreshment of course design and materials development at CML. Limitations are discussed together with future research recommendations, such as the need to thoroughly investigate non-linguistic issues influencing learning achievements, which may include cultural differences in learning strategies or learner-teacher expectations
Forty years of combinatorial technology.
Combinatorial technology has been facilitating the synthesis and screening of large molecular libraries containing millions of organic compounds ever since its introduction 40 years ago. It has changed the paradigms of pharmaceutical research from focusing on single compounds to focusing on immense collections of compounds. It inspired the development of dynamic combinatorial libraries, fragment-based drug discovery and virtual library screening. Combinatorial technology was revitalized by the development of DNA encoding. Amplification of DNA oligomers plus next-generation sequencing has made it possible to successfully screen billions of compounds in a single process
