Self sealing disconnect for tubing forms metal seal after breakaway
Disconnect fittings form a positive metal seal when the fill tube pulls against a metal sleeve when disconnected by force. A specially designed sleeve surrounds the fill tube. O-rings in the shoulder of the sleeve and near the outer end of the fill tube seal against leakage
Trace levels of metallic corrosion in water determined by emission spectrography
Emission spectrographic method determines trace amounts of inorganic impurities in potable water. The capability of this innovation should arouse considerable interest among plant biologists, chemists working in organic synthesis, and pathologists
Grain growth inhibitor for porous tungsten materials
Boron, either uncombined or combined with nitrogen or carbon added to tungsten powder prior to processing, effectively inhibits grain growth. The tungsten material is stable up to 1800 degrees C
High-spin low-spin transition
Temperature dependent nuclear inelastic-scattering (NIS) of synchrotron
radiation was applied to investigate both spin states of the spin-crossover
complex [Fe(tpa)(NCS)(2)] (tpa = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine). A remarkable
increase of the iron-ligand bond stretching upon spin crossover has
unambiguously been identified by comparing the measured NIS spectra with
theoretical simulations based on density-functional calculations
Thermofield Dynamics of the Heterotic String - Physical Aspects of the Thermal Duality -
The thermofield dynamics of the D = 10 heterotic thermal string theory is
described in proper reference to the thermal duality symmetry as well as the
thermal stability of modular invariance in association with the global phase
structure of the D = 10 heterotic thermal string ensemble.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, Minor correction
Bohmian mechanics in relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and string theory
I present a short overview of my recent achievements on the Bohmian
interpretation of relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and
string theory. This includes the relativistic-covariant Bohmian equations for
particle trajectories, the problem of particle creation and destruction, the
Bohmian interpretation of fermionic fields and the intrinsically Bohmian
quantization of fields and strings based on the De Donder-Weyl covariant
canonical formalism.Comment: 6 pages, talk given at Third International Workshop DICE2006,

How to capture active particles
For many applications, it is important to catch collections of autonomously
navigating microbes and man-made microswimmers in a controlled way. Here we
propose an efficient trap to collectively capture self-propelled colloidal
rods. By means of computer simulation in two dimensions, we show that a static
chevron-shaped wall represents an optimal boundary for a trapping device. Its
catching efficiency can be tuned by varying the opening angle of the trap. For
increasing angles, there is a sequence of three emergent states corresponding
to partial, complete, and no trapping. A trapping `phase diagram' maps out the
trap conditions under which the capture of self-propelled particles at a given
density is rendered optimal.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The origin of the Japanese and Korean accent systems
S.R. Ramsey writes (1979: 162): "The patterning of tone marks in Old Kyoto texts divides the vocabulary into virtually the same classes as those arrived at by comparing the accent distinctions found in the modern dialects. This means that the Old Kyoto dialect had a pitch system similar to that of proto-Japanese. The standard language of the Heian period may not actually be the ancestor of all the dialects of Japan, but at least as far as the accent system is concerned, it is close enough to the proto system to be used as a working model. The significance of this fact is important: It means that each of the dialects included in the comparison has as much to tell, at least potentially, as any other dialect about Old Kyoto accent.
