ABSTRACT: The mortality of the premature babies in Indonesia is still high. The exact cause of death is still unknown, because necropsy and pathological examination of the whole placenta are very rarely carried out. Needle biopsy of the dead premature babies\u27 organ is expected to help in searching the cause of death. A retrospective study was performed to reevaluate the biopsied organs of the dead prema tures from October 1970 through September 1971 in the Department of Pathology, Gadjah Mada University. Yogyakarta. The result of this study shows that early neonatal death of premature babies is 80,6% of all premature death. Based on histopathological examination of lung biopsies of those dead premature babies, it is clear that atelectasis is the primary cause, congestion the second, and Hyaline Membrane Disease (HMD) the third. Biopsies of other organs could not determine the exact cause of premature deaths as yet. Key Words: premature baby - early neonatal death - needle biopsy - atelectasis - Hyaline Membrane Diseas

Conjunctival melanoma potentially deadly tumor. While many cases of conjunctival melanoma appeared to be a recurrence, there is no valid data about parameters to predict the recurrence of this tumor. This study intended to evaluate whether histopathologic features can be used as a predictor for recurrence in conjunctival melanoma. This was a retrospective study, involving patients with conjunctival melanoma by the year 2013-1017 in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital and Dr. Yap Eye Hospital, Yogyakarta. Patient’s characteristic was determined by age, sex, laterality, tumor size, tumor location, histopathological dominancy, MMC application, recurrence, and metastases. Sixteen cases were found: male (62.5%) and female (37.5%). Age from 5-79 years, mean was 56.19 years. Tumor location was in bulbar in 11 patients (68.7%), palpebral in 5 patients (31.3%).There was significant association between metastasis and the tumor recurrence (OR 13.0; 95% CI 1.9-85.4; p = 0.007). A favorable trend of association was also found between location and the recurrence of melanoma (OR 15.0; 95% CI 0.9-228.8; p = 0.06). In summary, our study showed that the patients that developing distant metastasis were at a greater risk for tumor recurrence

Carcinoma of the male breast occurs so infrequently. Several articles reported that the relative frequency ranges between 0.46% —2% of all breast carcinoma. The histologic types of the male breast carcinoma were relatively the same as in the female, but in the male, lobular carcinoma and carcinoma with metaplasia were never found. The disease commonly occurs in elderly men, from the late fifth through the seventh decade, and in women it usually occurs before menopause. This situation suggests that estrogen has an important role in the pathogenesis of breast carcinoma. Two cases of male breast carcinoma were reported. One occurred in a man aged 28 years. The histologic type was papillary carcinoma with mucoid degeneration. The other occurred in an older man aged 70 years with infiltrating duct carcinoma. The latter case could support the important role of estrogen in causing carcinoma. But the other one, cannot support this. It must be thought that there are other factors, such as in genetic syndromes. Key Words: male breast carcinoma — estrogen — oncology — genetic syndromes — neoplas

Background: HPV infection has an important role in cell proliferation and apoptosis of malignant neoplasia through the binding of their E6 and E7 protein to the p53 and pRb. In cervical cancer the role of HPV infection in cells proliferation and apoptosis has not yet been defined up to now, since mutation of p53 gene and Rb gene in cervical cancer is very rare.Methodes: Thirty-eight block parafin cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix were stained immunohistochemically with polyclonal antibody against HPV and monoclonal antibody against p53, Rb, Ki-67 and Tunnel. with chromogen DAB and counterstain Hematoxyllin Meyer. The expression of HPV, p53, pRb, Ki-67 and Tunnel were counted based on the number of positive cells/100 tumor cells in five microscopic fields. The correlation between HPV expression and p53, pRb, Ki-67, Tunnel expression respectively were analyzed with Pearson correlation analysis. Results: There was a significant correlation between HPV expression with either p53 expressionR: 0.491, P:0.002) and or Ki-67 expression (R:0.397, P:0.014), but there was no significant correlation between HPV expression with pRB expression (R:0.3000, P:0.067) and Tunnel expression ( R:O,888, P:0,599).Conclusion: This research showed that HPV infection had important role in cell proliferation but not in cell apoptosis of cervical cancer.Key words: HPV, proliferation, apoptosis, p53, pRb, Ki-67, Tunnel, cervical carcinom
