Designing personalised, authentic and collaborative learning with mobile devices: Confronting the challenges of remote teaching during a pandemic.
This article offers teachers a digital pedagogical framework, research-inspired and underpinned by socio-cultural theory, to guide the design of personalised, authentic and collaborative learning scenarios for students using mobile devices in remote learning settings during this pandemic. It provides a series of freely available online resources underpinned by our framework, including a mobile learning toolkit, a professional learning app, and robust, validated surveys for evaluating tasks. Finally, it presents a set of evidence-based principles for effective innovative teaching with mobile devices
Innovative mobile learning: A scan of the literature

This paper summarises findings from an initial study completed as the first phase of the Erasmus+ KA2 research project: Designing and Evaluating Innovative Mobile Pedagogies (DEIMP). The purpose of the scoping study was to inform the design and development of a multi-purpose mobile app that will support educators and pre-service teachers in designing and evaluating creative and innovative mobile learning episodes for their students. This first component of the DEIMP study involved the conduct of a Systematic Literature Review to identify innovative and effective practices in m-Learning. A set of 57 articles were identified as reporting on innovative mobile practices and these were further assessed for their level of innovation. The study showed that innovation lies on a continuum from sustaining innovation to disruptive innovation and that disruptive innovation is infrequent
Mobagogy- mobile learning for a higher education community
This paper reports on a project in which a learning community of higher educators was formed to investigate how best to use mobile technologies in their own learning and teaching. Activities of this group included investigating best practice approaches by interviewing experts in the field, exploring the literature on mobile learning and then initiating and testing some mobile learning pedagogies in the context of their own higher education subjects. The community met regularly to discuss emerging issues and applications. The paper shares some of the findings gained both from the expert interviews and from the experiences of members of the community, and discusses the challenges and constraints that were experienced. We conclude with recommendations for promoting mobile learning communities in higher education. © 2010 IADIS
Bell's theorem as a signature of nonlocality: a classical counterexample
For a system composed of two particles Bell's theorem asserts that averages
of physical quantities determined from local variables must conform to a family
of inequalities. In this work we show that a classical model containing a local
probabilistic interaction in the measurement process can lead to a violation of
the Bell inequalities. We first introduce two-particle phase-space
distributions in classical mechanics constructed to be the analogs of quantum
mechanical angular momentum eigenstates. These distributions are then employed
in four schemes characterized by different types of detectors measuring the
angular momenta. When the model includes an interaction between the detector
and the measured particle leading to ensemble dependencies, the relevant Bell
inequalities are violated if total angular momentum is required to be
conserved. The violation is explained by identifying assumptions made in the
derivation of Bell's theorem that are not fulfilled by the model. These
assumptions will be argued to be too restrictive to see in the violation of the
Bell inequalities a faithful signature of nonlocality.Comment: Extended manuscript. Significant change
The comprehensive cohort model in a pilot trial in orthopaedic trauma
Background: The primary aim of this study was to provide an estimate of effect size for the functional outcome of
operative versus non-operative treatment for patients with an acute rupture of the Achilles tendon using
accelerated rehabilitation for both groups of patients. The secondary aim was to assess the use of a
comprehensive cohort research design (i.e. a parallel patient-preference group alongside a randomised group) in
improving the accuracy of this estimate within an orthopaedic trauma setting.
Methods: Pragmatic randomised controlled trial and comprehensive cohort study within a level 1 trauma centre.
Twenty randomised participants (10 operative and 10 non-operative) and 29 preference participants (3 operative
and 26 non-operative). The ge range was 22-72 years and 37 of the 52 patients were men. All participants had an
acute rupture of their Achilles tendon and no other injuries. All of the patients in the operative group had a simple
end-to-end repair of the tendon with no augmentation. Both groups then followed the same eight-week
immediate weight-bearing rehabilitation programme using an off-the-shelf orthotic. The disability rating index (DRI;
primary outcome), EQ-5D, Achilles Total Rupture Score and complications were assessed ed at two weeks, six
weeks, three months, six months and nine months after initial injury.
Results: At nine months, there was no significant difference in DRI between patients randomised to operative or
non-operative management. There was no difference in DRI between the randomised group and the parallel
patient preference group. The use of a comprehensive cohort of patients did not provide useful additional
information as to the treatment effect size because the majority of patients chose non-operative management.
Conclusions: Recruitment to clinical trials that compare operative and non-operative interventions is notoriously
difficult; especially within the trauma setting. Including a parallel patient preference group to create a
comprehensive cohort of patients has been suggested as a way of increasing the power of such trials. In our
study, the comprehensive cohort model doubled the number of patients involved in the study. However, a strong
preference for non-operative treatment meant that the increased number of patients did not significantly increase
the ability of the trial to detect a difference between the two interventions
Heat Transport in a Strongly Overdoped Cuprate: Fermi Liquid and Pure d-wave BCS Superconductor
The transport of heat and charge in the overdoped cuprate superconductor
Tl_2Ba_2CuO_(6+delta) was measured down to low temperature. In the normal
state, obtained by applying a magnetic field greater than the upper critical
field, the Wiedemann-Franz law is verified to hold perfectly. In the
superconducting state, a large residual linear term is observed in the thermal
conductivity, in quantitative agreement with BCS theory for a d-wave
superconductor. This is compelling evidence that the electrons in overdoped
cuprates form a Fermi liquid, with no indication of spin-charge separation.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, published version, title changed, Phys. Rev.

Adapting to the digital age: a narrative approach
The article adopts a narrative inquiry approach to foreground informal learning and exposes a collection of stories from tutors about how they adapted comfortably to the digital age. We were concerned that despite substantial evidence that bringing about changes in pedagogic practices can be difficult, there is a gap in convincing approaches to help in this respect. In this context, this project takes a âbottom-upâ approach and synthesises several life-stories into a single persuasive narrative to support the process of adapting to digital change. The project foregrounds the small, every-day motivating moments, cultural features and environmental factors in people's diverse lives which may have contributed to their positive dispositions towards change in relation to technology enhanced learning. We expect that such narrative approaches could serve to support colleagues in other institutions to warm up to ever-changing technological advances
Appropriate timing of the 14 C-urea breath test to establish eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection
The aim of this study was to determine the performance characteristics of the 14 C-urea breath test (UBT) performed 2 wk after the completion of therapy for Helicobacter pylori using a 4 to 6 wk study as the gold standard. METHODS : Patients with active Helicobacter pylori infection at four medical centers received proton pump inhibitor-based triple or quadruple therapy for 10â14 days. Patients underwent the 14 C-UBT 2 and 4â6 wk after the completion of therapy. A positive test was defined as 14 CO 2 excretion of >200 dpm, a negative test as 50 but <200 dpm. Performance characteristics of the 2-wk UBT were calculated using the 4 to 6-wk result as a gold standard. RESULTS : Eighty-five patients were enrolled and 82 patients (mean ± SD age, 62 ± 15 yr; 15 women) completed the protocol. Four patients had equivocal UBT results and were excluded from the analysis. Of the 78 patients, 68 (87%) had a negative 4 to 6-wk UBT. The 2-week UBT yielded a sensitivity of 90% (95% confidence interval 72â100%), specificity of 99% (97â100%), and accuracy of 97% (93â100%). In patients with a persistently positive UBT, 14 CO 2 excretion at 2 wk was significantly lower than at 4â6 wk after therapy ( p = 0.03 ). CONCLUSIONS : A UBT performed 2 wk after therapy yielded results comparable to 4 to 6 wk testing. Further studies to evaluate the optimal time of confirmatory testing in the age of more effective proton pump inhibitor-based triple therapies are warranted.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73434/1/j.1572-0241.2000.02005.x.pd
Characterising plasticised cellulose acetate-based historic artefacts by NMR spectroscopy: a new approach for quantifying the degree of substitution and diethyl phthalate contents
As one of the first semi-synthetic plastics produced industrially, cellulose acetate (CA)-based artefacts represent valued items in museum collections and archives which, however, present stability issues. High temperature and relative humidity conditions have long been known to promote changes in CA properties, for instance, due to the deacetylation of CA polymer chains and the loss of plasticiser from the polymer matrix. However, there is a need for improved methods for the quantification of plasticiser loss and CA deacetylation. In this context, this contribution presents a new approach for enabling the investigation of plasticiser loss and deacetylation degradation processes in historic plasticised CA-based artefacts which is based on high-resolution proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The proposed methods allow for simple and fast quantification of diethyl phthalate contents and average degree of substitution (DS), while requiring no need for extractive separation between the plasticiser and the CA polymer matrix prior to analysis. Both methods are demonstrated by their application towards a series of reference samples, historic artefacts and artificially aged plasticised CA materials. Our analysis indicates that plasticiser content and DS can be accurately quantified by using high-resolution 1H NMR and both methods have been compared to analyses performed using infrared spectroscopy
