    Pseudo-Separation for Assessment of Structural Vulnerability of a Network

    Based upon the idea that network functionality is impaired if two nodes in a network are sufficiently separated in terms of a given metric, we introduce two combinatorial \emph{pseudocut} problems generalizing the classical min-cut and multi-cut problems. We expect the pseudocut problems will find broad relevance to the study of network reliability. We comprehensively analyze the computational complexity of the pseudocut problems and provide three approximation algorithms for these problems. Motivated by applications in communication networks with strict Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements, we demonstrate the utility of the pseudocut problems by proposing a targeted vulnerability assessment for the structure of communication networks using QoS metrics; we perform experimental evaluations of our proposed approximation algorithms in this context

    Macroscopic behavior of bidisperse suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress fluids

    We study both experimentally and theoretically the rheological behavior of isotropic bidisperse suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress fluids. We focus on materials in which noncolloidal particles interact with the suspending fluid only through hydrodynamical interactions. We observe that both the elastic modulus and yield stress of bidisperse suspensions are lower than those of monodisperse suspensions of same solid volume fraction. Moreover, we show that the dimensionless yield stress of such suspensions is linked to their dimensionless elastic modulus and to their solid volume fraction through the simple equation of Chateau et al.[J. rheol. 52, 489-506 (2008)]. We also show that the effect of the particle size heterogeneity can be described by means of a packing model developed to estimate random loose packing of assemblies of dry particles. All these observations finally allow us to propose simple closed form estimates for both the elastic modulus and the yield stress of bidisperse suspensions: while the elastic modulus is a function of the reduced volume fraction Ď•/Ď•m\phi/\phi_m only, where Ď•m\phi_m is the estimated random loose packing, the yield stress is a function of both the volume fraction Ď•\phi and the reduced volume fraction

    Campath-1H preconditioning with tacrolimus monotherapy is an effective immunosuppressive regimen for pancreas transplantation, with acceptable patient and graft survival rates early after transplantation. Rejection rates are low under this protocol if the tacrolimus level is kept consistently >10 ng/ml. This immunosuppressive protocol, combined with recent technical refinements, has resulted in lower rates of thrombosis and overall complications. Pancreatic transplantation en-bloc with visceral grafts has the following unique features: Diabetes is a rare indication, and HLA matching is not required. The gland is immunologically protected by the simultaneously transplanted visceral organs. Disease gravity, surgical complexity and gut alloimmunity influence the overall pancreatic allograft survival. The current UNOS listing criteria and data registry should be modified for obvious logistic and scientific reasons

    Easy and rapid detection of iron in rice grain

    In this study, we show how a preliminary determination of grain Fe in rice may be made with reaction to Perls’ Prussian blue, a stain for Fe (III). Differential localization of Fe in grain parts was indicated by the intensity of reaction of tissue Fe to the dye. The blue colour reaction was most intense in the embryo, weak in the aleurone layer of the pericarp and invisible in the endosperm. The staining intensity also varied with the region of the embryo, generally being strongest in the scutellum, intermediate in the coleorhiza and weakest in the coleoptile. Variation in the reaction to Perls’ Prussian blue was observed among eleven rice genotypes with varying grain Fe contents. The intensity of the blue colour reaction in the embryo of different rice genotypes was indicative of their grain Fe contents for both brown and white (polished) rice. Those with high grain Fe, >14 mg Fe kg-1, were clearly distinguishable from those with <10 mg Fe kg-1 with Perls’ Prussian blue. We suggest that this simple staining procedure may be used to quickly screen for high Fe contents in large germplasms containing hundreds of rice entries, using reactions in genotypes with known grain contents as standards

    Quantitative study of calcium uptake by tumorigenic bone (TE-85) and neuroblastoma Ă— glioma (NG108-15) cells exposed to extremely-low-frequency (ELF) electric fields

    AbstractTo verify the effect of cell culture state on frequency dependent increase in proliferation as well as Ca2+ flux across the plasma membrane, tumorigenic bone (TE-85) and neuroblastoma × glioma (NG108-15) cells cultured in the presence of fetal bovine serum (FBS) were exposed to capacitively coupled electric (CCEF) fields in the extremely low frequency (ELF) range of 10 to 18 Hz. [3H]Thymidine incorporation and 45Ca2+ uptake were used as endpoints. TE-85 cells cultured in the presence of 10% FBS did not exhibit a frequency dependent increase in proliferation in contrast to previous studies under growth arrested culture conditions, in which the cells were deprived of FBS. However, both TE-85 and NG108-15 cells had an increase in 45Ca2+ uptake in response to a 16 Hz 18.3 mV/cm CCEF. Fura-2 digital imaging microscopy was used to verify addition of 0.5 mM La3+ and 0.5 mM ionomycin as negative and positive controls, respectively. Imaging microscopy data was combined with 45Ca2+ incorporation results to quantify free intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) increase in response to CCEF exposure. TE-85 [Ca2+]i increased from 140 to 189–210 nM where as NG108-15 [Ca2+]i increased from 67 to 189–210 nM. These results suggested that serum deprivation may be a requirement for a frequency dependent increase in proliferation in TE-85 cells but is not necessary for the electric field induced increase in 45Ca2+ uptake in both TE-85 adn NG108 cells. The present study also represents the first demonstration of increased45Ca2+ uptake by neuroblastoma and/or glioma cells in response to an electric field exposure

    Enabling E2E reliable communications with adaptive re-encoding over delay tolerant networks

    Reliable end-to-end (E2E) communication in Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a challenging task due to long delay and frequent link disruptions. To enable reliability, the IETF is currently looking at strategies to integrate erasure coding mechanisms inside DTN architecture. The objective is to extend the ability of the existing DTN bundle fragmentation mechanism to support cases where bundles have a high probability of being lost. To date, discussions agree that an intermediate node can re-encode bundles, leaving all decoding process at the destination node in order to let intermediate node operations be as simple as possible. We propose to study and analyze possible re-encoding strategies at intermediate nodes using an on-the-fly coding paradigm. We also investigate how re-encoding and acknowledgment strategies based on this coding scheme would enable reliable E2E communication. Finally, we propose an adaptive mechanism with low complexity that deals with both re-routing events and network dynamics which are common in the context of DTN. Simulation results show that re-encoding at the relay and the adaptive mechanism allows a significant reduction in terms of network overhead injected by erasure codes while ensuring the E2E reliability

    A high-affinity antibody against the CSP N-terminal domain lacks Plasmodium falciparum inhibitory activity

    Malaria is a global health concern and research efforts are ongoing to develop a superior vaccine to RTS,S/AS01. To guide immunogen design, we seek a comprehensive understanding of the protective humoral response against Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP). In contrast to the well-studied responses to the repeat region and the C-terminus, the antibody response against the N-terminal domain of PfCSP (N-CSP) remains obscure. Here, we characterized the molecular recognition and functional efficacy of the N-CSP-specific monoclonal antibody 5D5. The crystal structure at 1.85 Åresolution revealed that 5D5 binds an α-helical epitope in N-CSP with high affinity through extensive shape and charge complementarity, and the unusual utilization of an N-linked glycan. Nevertheless, functional studies indicated low 5D5 binding to live Pf sporozoites, and lack of sporozoite inhibition in vitro and in mosquitoes. Overall, our data on low recognition and inhibition of sporozoites do not support the inclusion of the 5D5 epitope into the next generation of CSP-based vaccines.Summary Statement The Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite surface protein, PfCSP, is an attractive vaccine target, but the antibody response against the CSP N-terminal domain has remained understudied.     Static and vibration analysis of functionally graded beams using refined shear deformation theory

    Static and vibration analysis of functionally graded beams using refined shear deformation theory is presented. The developed theory, which does not require shear correction factor, accounts for shear deformation effect and coupling coming from the material anisotropy. Governing equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The resulting coupling is referred to as triply coupled axial-flexural response. A two-noded Hermite-cubic element with five degree-of-freedom per node is developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are obtained for functionally graded beams with simply-supported, cantilever-free and clamped-clamped boundary conditions to investigate effects of the power-law exponent and modulus ratio on the displacements, natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes
