Scholarly Communication Initiatives Department Jan 2018 - June 2019 Report
This report highlights the major accomplishments of the Scholarly Communication Initiatives Department (SCI) with a special emphasis on statistics from Digital Scholarship@UNLV, our institutional repository. The report reflects activities from January 2018 through June 2019.
The significant highlights during this time include the 5 millionth download of a digital item from Digital Scholarship@UNLV, adding over 3,000 full-text theses and dissertations written at UNLV from 1977-2008, establishing pilot projects to support open access and research data management efforts, releasing the 2013 and 2017 Solar Decathlon collections, and hosting an ambitious and engaging Open Access Week slate of activities
Reflections on the future of research curation and research reproducibility
In the years since the launch of the World Wide Web in 1993, there have been profoundly transformative changes to the entire concept of publishing—exceeding all the previous combined technical advances of the centuries following the introduction of movable type in medieval Asia around the year 10001 and the subsequent large-scale commercialization of printing several centuries later by J. Gutenberg (circa 1440). Periodicals in print—from daily newspapers to scholarly journals—are now quickly disappearing, never to return, and while no publishing sector has been unaffected, many scholarly journals are almost unrecognizable in comparison with their counterparts of two decades ago. To say that digital delivery of the written word is fundamentally different is a huge understatement. Online publishing permits inclusion of multimedia and interactive content that add new dimensions to what had been available in print-only renderings. As of this writing, the IEEE portfolio of journal titles comprises 59 online only2 (31%) and 132 that are published in both print and online. The migration from print to online is more stark than these numbers indicate because of the 132 periodicals that are both print and online, the print runs are now quite small and continue to decline. In short, most readers prefer to have their subscriptions fulfilled by digital renderings only
Identity in research infrastructure and scientific communication: Report from the 1st IRISC workshop, Helsinki Sep 12-13, 2011
Motivation for the IRISC workshop came from the observation that identity and digital identification are increasingly important factors in modern scientific research, especially with the now near-ubiquitous use of the Internet as a global medium for dissemination and debate of scientific knowledge and data, and as a platform for scientific collaborations and large-scale e-science activities.

The 1 1/2 day IRISC2011 workshop sought to explore a series of interrelated topics under two main themes: i) unambiguously identifying authors/creators & attributing their scholarly works, and ii) individual identification and access management in the context of identity federations. Specific aims of the workshop included:

• Raising overall awareness of key technical and non-technical challenges, opportunities and developments.
• Facilitating a dialogue, cross-pollination of ideas, collaboration and coordination between diverse – and largely unconnected – communities.
• Identifying & discussing existing/emerging technologies, best practices and requirements for researcher identification.

This report provides background information on key identification-related concepts & projects, describes workshop proceedings and summarizes key workshop findings

If you build it, will they come? How researchers perceive and use web 2.0
Over the past 15 years, the web has transformed the way we seek and use
information. In the last 5 years in particular a set of innovative techniques –
collectively termed ‘web 2.0’ – have enabled people to become producers as
well as consumers of information.
It has been suggested that these relatively easy-to-use tools, and the behaviours which
underpin their use, have enormous potential for scholarly researchers, enabling them to
communicate their research and its findings more rapidly, broadly and effectively than
ever before.
This report is based on a study commissioned by the Research Information Network to
investigate whether such aspirations are being realised. It seeks to improve our currently
limited understanding of whether, and if so how, researchers are making use of various
web 2.0 tools in the course of their work, the factors that encourage or inhibit adoption,
and researchers’ attitudes towards web 2.0 and other forms of communication.
Context:
How researchers communicate their work and their findings varies in different subjects
or disciplines, and in different institutional settings. Such differences have a strong
influence on how researchers approach the adoption – or not – of new information and
communications technologies. It is also important to stress that ‘web 2.0’ encompasses
a wide range of interactions between technologies and social practices which allow web
users to generate, repurpose and share content with each other. We focus in this study on
a range of generic tools – wikis, blogs and some social networking systems – as well as
those designed specifically by and for people within the scholarly community.
Method:
Our study was designed not only to capture current attitudes and patterns of adoption but
also to identify researchers’ needs and aspirations, and problems that they encounter.
We began with an online survey, which collected information about researchers’ information
gathering and dissemination habits and their attitudes towards web 2.0. This was followed
by in-depth, semi-structured interviews with a stratified sample of survey respondents to
explore in more depth their experience of web 2.0, including perceived barriers as well as
drivers to adoption. Finally, we undertook five case studies of web 2.0 services to investigate
their development and adoption across different communities and business models.
Key findings:
Our study indicates that a majority of researchers are making at least occasional use of one
or more web 2.0 tools or services for purposes related to their research: for communicating
their work; for developing and sustaining networks and collaborations; or for finding out
about what others are doing. But frequent or intensive use is rare, and some researchers
regard blogs, wikis and other novel forms of communication as a waste of time or even
dangerous.
In deciding if they will make web 2.0 tools and services part of their everyday practice, the
key questions for researchers are the benefits they may secure from doing so, and how it fits
with their use of established services. Researchers who use web 2.0 tools and services do not
see them as comparable to or substitutes for other channels and means of communication,
but as having their own distinctive role for specific purposes and at particular stages of
research. And frequent use of one kind of tool does not imply frequent use of others as well
Print or Perish? Authors’ Attitudes Toward Electronic-Only Publication of Law Journals
An increasing number of U.S. law journals post at least current issues in freely accessible PDF and (in some cases) HTML formats on their web sites. Yet, perhaps without exception, the journals that make their articles freely available on their websites also continue to publish print issues in the face of declining subscription numbers, and law libraries\u27 growing disinterest in collecting and preserving journals in print. As universities reduce staff, freeze open positions, eliminate salary increases, and cut library budgets, why have law schools continued to subsidize print publication of journals that are accessible in electronic formats? Among the reasons suggested for this is the possible impact on a journals reputation and ability to attract authors if it moved to electronic-only publication. SAVE-SD 2017: Third Workshop on Semantics, Analytics and Visualisation: Enhancing Scholarly Data
The third edition of the Workshop on Semantics, Analytics and Visualisation: Enhancing Scholarly Data (SAVE-SD 2017) is taking place in Perth, Australia on the 3rd of April 2017, co-located with the 26th International World Wide Web Conference. The main goal of the workshop is to provide a venue for researchers, publishers and other companies to engage in discussions about semantics, analytics and visualisations on scholarly data

Towards a Cloud-Based Service for Maintaining and Analyzing Data About Scientific Events
We propose the new cloud-based service OpenResearch for managing and
analyzing data about scientific events such as conferences and workshops in a
persistent and reliable way. This includes data about scientific articles,
participants, acceptance rates, submission numbers, impact values as well as
organizational details such as program committees, chairs, fees and sponsors.
OpenResearch is a centralized repository for scientific events and supports
researchers in collecting, organizing, sharing and disseminating information
about scientific events in a structured way. An additional feature currently
under development is the possibility to archive web pages along with the
extracted semantic data in order to lift the burden of maintaining new and old
conference web sites from public research institutions. However, the main
advantage is that this cloud-based repository enables a comprehensive analysis
of conference data. Based on extracted semantic data, it is possible to
determine quality estimations, scientific communities, research trends as well
the development of acceptance rates, fees, and number of participants in a
continuous way complemented by projections into the future. Furthermore, data
about research articles can be systematically explored using a content-based
analysis as well as citation linkage. All data maintained in this
crowd-sourcing platform is made freely available through an open SPARQL
endpoint, which allows for analytical queries in a flexible and user-defined
