    Cloud computing resource scheduling and a survey of its evolutionary approaches

    A disruptive technology fundamentally transforming the way that computing services are delivered, cloud computing offers information and communication technology users a new dimension of convenience of resources, as services via the Internet. Because cloud provides a finite pool of virtualized on-demand resources, optimally scheduling them has become an essential and rewarding topic, where a trend of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms is emerging rapidly. Through analyzing the cloud computing architecture, this survey first presents taxonomy at two levels of scheduling cloud resources. It then paints a landscape of the scheduling problem and solutions. According to the taxonomy, a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches is presented systematically. Looking forward, challenges and potential future research directions are investigated and invited, including real-time scheduling, adaptive dynamic scheduling, large-scale scheduling, multiobjective scheduling, and distributed and parallel scheduling. At the dawn of Industry 4.0, cloud computing scheduling for cyber-physical integration with the presence of big data is also discussed. Research in this area is only in its infancy, but with the rapid fusion of information and data technology, more exciting and agenda-setting topics are likely to emerge on the horizon

    An Extensive Exploration of Techniques for Resource and Cost Management in Contemporary Cloud Computing Environments

    Resource and cost optimization techniques in cloud computing environments target minimizing expenditure while ensuring efficient resource utilization. This study categorizes these techniques into three primary groups: Cloud and VM-focused strategies, Workflow techniques, and Resource Utilization and Efficiency techniques. Cloud and VM-focused strategies predominantly concentrate on the allocation, scheduling, and optimization of resources within cloud environments, particularly virtual machines. These strategies aim at a balance between cost reduction and adhering to specified deadlines, while ensuring scalability and adaptability to different cloud models. However, they may introduce complexities due to their dynamic nature and continuous optimization requirements. Workflow techniques emphasize the optimal execution of tasks in distributed systems. They address inconsistencies in Quality of Service (QoS) and seek to enhance the reservation process and task scheduling. By employing models, such as Integer Linear Programming, these techniques offer precision. But they might be computationally demanding, especially for extensive problems. Techniques focusing on Resource Utilization and Efficiency attempts to maximize the use of available resources in an energy-efficient and cost-effective manner. Considering factors like current energy levels and application requirements, these models aim to optimize performance without overshooting budgets. However, a continuous monitoring mechanism might be necessary, which can introduce additional complexities

    A Survey of Resource Management Challenges in Multi-cloud Environment: Taxonomy and Empirical Analysis

    Cloud computing has seen a great deal of interest by researchers and industrial firms since its first coined. Different perspectives and research problems, such as energy efficiency, security and threats, to name but a few, have been dealt with and addressed from cloud computing perspective. However, cloud computing environment still encounters a major challenge of how to allocate and manage computational resources efficiently. Furthermore, due to the different architectures and cloud computing networks and models used (i.e., federated clouds, VM migrations, cloud brokerage), the complexity of resource management in the cloud has been increased dramatically. Cloud providers and service consumers have the cloud brokers working as the intermediaries between them, and the confusion among the cloud computing parties (consumers, brokers, data centres and service providers) on who is responsible for managing the request of cloud resources is a key issue. In a traditional scenario, upon renting the various cloud resources from the providers, the cloud brokers engage in subletting and managing these resources to the service consumers. However, providers’ usually deal with many brokers, and vice versa, and any dispute of any kind between the providers and the brokers will lead to service unavailability, in which the consumer is the only victim. Therefore, managing cloud resources and services still needs a lot of attention and effort.     Workflow Scheduling Techniques and Algorithms in IaaS Cloud: A Survey

    In the modern era, workflows are adopted as a powerful and attractive paradigm for expressing/solving a variety of applications like scientific, data intensive computing, and big data applications such as MapReduce and Hadoop. These complex applications are described using high-level representations in workflow methods. With the emerging model of cloud computing technology, scheduling in the cloud becomes the important research topic. Consequently, workflow scheduling problem has been studied extensively over the past few years, from homogeneous clusters, grids to the most recent paradigm, cloud computing. The challenges that need to be addressed lies in task-resource mapping, QoS requirements, resource provisioning, performance fluctuation, failure handling, resource scheduling, and data storage. This work focuses on the complete study of the resource provisioning and scheduling algorithms in cloud environment focusing on Infrastructure as a service (IaaS). We provided a comprehensive understanding of existing scheduling techniques and provided an insight into research challenges that will be a possible future direction to the researchers

    A Review of Workflow Scheduling in Cloud Computing Environment

    Abstract Over the years, distributed environments have evolved from shared community platforms to utility-based models; the latest of these being Cloud computing. This technology enables the delivery of IT resources over the Internet and follows a pay-as-you-go model where users are charged based on their usage. There are various types of Cloud providers each of which has different product offerings. They are classified into a hierarchy of as-a-service terms: Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). There are a mass of researches on the issue of scheduling in cloud computing, most of them, however, are about workflow and job scheduling. A cloud workflow system is a type of platform service which facilitates the automation of distributed applications based on the novel cloud infrastructure. Many scheduling policies have been proposed till now which aim to maximize the amount of work completed while meeting QoS constraints such as deadline and budget. However many of them are not optimal to incorporate some basic principles of Cloud Computing such as the elasticity and heterogeneity of the computing resources. Therefore our work focuses on studying various problems and issues related to workflow scheduling
