Performance enhancement of multiuser MIMO wireless communication systems
This paper describes a new approach to the problem of enhancing the performance of a multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system for communication from one base station to many mobile stations in both frequency-flat and frequency-selective fading channels. This problem arises in space-division multiplexing systems with multiple users where many independent signal streams can be transmitted in the same frequency and time slot through the exploitation of multiple antennas at both the base and mobile stations, Our new approach is based on maximizing a lower bound for the product of signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of a multiuser MIMO system. This provides a closed-form (noniterative) solution for the antenna weights for all the users, under the constraint of fixed transmit power. Our solution is shown by simulation to have better performance than previously proposed iterative or noniterative solutions. In addition, our solution requires significantly reduced complexity over a gradient search-based method that directly optimizes the product SINgs while still maintaining similar performance. Our solution assumes channel state information is present at the base station or transmitter
Optical wireless communication systems
The emerging field of optical wireless communication (OWC) systems is seen as potential complementary technology to the radio frequency wireless communications in certain applications. It is deemed as a possible technology in the future 5th Generation communication networks to address the spectrum congestion and improve the system's capacity. More research and developments in OWC is still needed in order for it to be adopted in current and future communication systems. This special issue brings together research papers on OWC covering free space optic, visible communications and ultraviolet communications
Quantum Entanglement Distribution in Next-Generation Wireless Communication Systems
In this work we analyze the distribution of quantum entanglement over
communication channels in the millimeter-wave regime. The motivation for such a
study is the possibility for next-generation wireless networks (beyond 5G) to
accommodate such a distribution directly - without the need to integrate
additional optical communication hardware into the transceivers. Future
wireless communication systems are bound to require some level of quantum
communications capability. We find that direct quantum-entanglement
distribution in the millimeter-wave regime is indeed possible, but that its
implementation will be very demanding from both a system-design perspective and
a channel-requirement perspective.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Power Efficient and Secure Full-Duplex Wireless Communication Systems
In this paper, we study resource allocation for a full-duplex (FD) radio base
station serving multiple half-duplex (HD) downlink and uplink users
simultaneously. The considered resource allocation algorithm design is
formulated as a non-convex optimization problem taking into account minimum
required receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) for downlink
and uplink communication and maximum tolerable SINRs at potential
eavesdroppers. The proposed optimization framework enables secure downlink and
uplink communication via artificial noise generation in the downlink for
interfering the potential eavesdroppers. We minimize the weighted sum of the
total downlink and uplink transmit power by jointly optimizing the downlink
beamformer, the artificial noise covariance matrix, and the uplink transmit
power. We adopt a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation approach to obtain
a tractable solution for the considered problem. The tightness of the SDP
relaxation is revealed by examining a sufficient condition for the global
optimality of the solution. Simulation results demonstrate the excellent
performance achieved by the proposed scheme and the significant transmit power
savings enabled optimization of the artificial noise covariance matrix.Comment: 6 pages, invited paper, IEEE Conference on Communications and Network
