    Get PDF
For the first 20 years of your life, someone else has been making critical decisions for you. But you\u27re in college, you\u27re kind of in transition because you\u27re going to get out of here and you\u27re in a process of entering adulthood now. What do you want your life to look like when you\u27re 40? That is a significant question that most people who are 20 don\u27t spend much time thinking about. But you see, here you are and you\u27re 20 years old and a lot of what has happened to you is because of the choices that your parents have made for you. What do you want your life to look like at 40? Will you be married? If you will be married, what kind of person will you be married to? Will you have kids? All right, let\u27s say you do have kids. What is it that you want to teach your kids? What is it that you want to instill in your children? What is important to you that they know? How do you want them to be disciplined? How do you want them to be taught? What kind of schools do you want them in

It’s like a colored cube. You try to put it together, you get so frustrated you want to throw it at the wall and smash it. But you have to take time; you have to cooperate with it. You have to make it go the way it needs to go. When you finally do it, you’re like, man, I’m kind of glad I didn’t throw it at the wall and smash it. So I know how to do what I need to do now. I know what I need to do to make this cube work. And sometimes life is like that. And you need to be patient. You need to get all your anger out and cooperate with this cube- with the cube of life… yea. You need to stay in control. You need to cooperate. You need to have fun and see if they (others) will have fun with you. Just like this cube, and you can try. You could throw the cube at the wall; you can break the cube, but it won’t get you anywhere. You won’t learn anything. You won’t make new friends. You won’t have fun. No Fine End for a Modern Day Alice in Transit

To the reader---; How I live is a giant writing thing, even when I\u27m not writing. There is always breath, both shallow and deep, and somewhere, wet jackets, sides of the same world. It is about the blob, mostly because all of this has been written and said but for the ghost that follows me around. What matters most finds us when we are open, the way a flower opens up for the Sun I write because I don\u27t have a choice, the way Alice had to go through Wonderland before she could get out. What is left, having left Wonderland? But, wonder of course. Here is absolute necessity because \u27Writing, I feel, is an art, and artists, I feel, are human beings\u27 (e.e. Cummings). The blob, you see. Simultaneously, a giant sphere, all parts working at once. Nothing is fully separate. Don\u27t believe me? Neither do the bugs. Life is very serious, and strange, and funny. Go ask Alice. Because guess what, the bugs don\u27t believe her either; Let my truth be your truth, and then change it somewhere in the process, wherever you see fit. Things lie deeply wedged in the world, and none of me knows quite what the world is, just that it is. Just as you must be true, I have given myself to the world that wants me (as there are more than one when you take into account the wetness of imagination), because if I don\u27t, then what\u27s this life anyway? What\u27s this world? Peter Gabriel says, \u27If you don\u27t get given you learn to take, and I will take you.\u27 You ought to say this, Too \u27Tis better to be given over to something than to force myself into a mold because I want to fit somewhere amongst the made constructions that hold life together. I am only what I am in this poetry. It is about many things, this book.*; (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Visual literacy for libraries: A practical, standards-based guide

When we step back and think about how to situate visual literacy into a library context, the word critical keeps coming up: critical thinking, critical viewing, critical using, critical making, and the list goes on. To understand our approach, start with your own practice, add images, and see where it takes you. Do you encourage students to think critically as they research? How can you extend this experience to images? Do you embrace critical information literacy? Can you bring visual content to enrich that experience? Do you teach students to critically evaluate sources? How can you expand that practice to images? You’ll see a lot of questions in this book, because our approach is inquiry- driven. This is not to say that we don’t cover the basics of image content. Curious about color? Covered. Not sure where to find great images? We’ll show you. Wondering what makes a good presentation? We talk about that too. But what we really want you to get out of this book is a new understanding of how images fit into our critical (there it is again) practice as librarians and how we can advance student learning with our own visual literacy. This book grounds visual literacy in your everyday practice—connecting it to what you know and do as a librarian who engages in reflective practice. Heidi Jacobs put it well when she argued that, for information literacy pedagogy, “one of the best ways for us to encourage students to be engaged learners is for us to become engaged learners, delve deeply into our own problem posing, and embody the kind of engagement we want to see in our students” (Jacobs 2008). We extend this viewpoint to visual literacy pedagogy and provide many opportunities for you to embody the kind of visual literacy that you want to develop in your learners

Now, I saw what\u27s been going on here just a little bit in today\u27s politics, and it made me realize that really, if you want to get people to listen to you, you have to make a really bold claim. Right. So I\u27m going to make three really bold claims. Kind of give me a chance here and don\u27t all rush me [indiscernible] that way. But one of them that\u27s especially bold is that judges and lawyers, they don\u27t see things the way that ordinary people do. Now, you\u27re already kind of saying, come on. And so I\u27ll just add a little proviso. They don\u27t see things the way that the public does, well, except when they do

    Slenderman, European Myth Turned Game

It was just simply, a game where you find eight pages, and then, you find out the creepy way that once you find the eighth page, you still die. [I laugh] So, [he laughs] not fun. And I was like what’s up with these random pages, what does this have to do with anything, who is this guy? Big, tall, slender, like, a white fabric, mask. or they say he had no face. So there’s that. Um, we kept on playing more of the games as time kept on going, so for like two years I had no idea who he really was, I just, had fun playing the games with friends here and there. And then, I--, we finally started --, uh they made more games, and they made them more intricate. Um, I finally started, I started finally googling, who the heck he was. And -- so everything I know just comes from, like, Wikipedia. What, what I remember reading and looking into was that he’s mostly just like a myth, or a legend, you might say. Um, I first remember reading that it was --it had taken -- he was known throughout Norway, then I found out he was known in Germany, he was known in, uh, Denmark, so I honestly, it sounds like you got different names, and it’s always the same kind of creature. The fact that, it’s happening in different countries is, kind of creepy [I laugh], even if he’s got a different name, he’s mostly known, all the names kind of amounts to the same thing. A tall, slender, man in a black suit. No face. Um, other stories, what he’s been known-the mos--what I’ve know, mainly know him as, is from the video games, the video games base it off of these myths as well, so it’s kind of somewhat accurate, and the creepy part about it is that, as, he, tries to kidnap children, that’s the main thing, in the video game you’re just a grown man, but, in the myths, you know, he’s always been seen in pictures by parks, or staring through a creepy window at the children he intends to kidnap, and any time, the children claim to see him through the window, or any time people claim to see him in their pictures, and there are apparently lots of pictures out there, you can find them all over google, of seeing this tall, creepy man off in the background, or in the shade, next, behind a tree or something, you know, a shady spot or whatever. Pun intended [we both laugh], but uh, [laughter], but he’s literally like, when he’s seen in those pictures, those children or that child, seems to disappear quick, afterwards. And they never know what he does with them, or where they end up, they just kind of--that’s the kind of creepy part. Um, the creepy part, was in the myths though, that they displayed very well in the video games, and this is where a lot people get freaked out is, he’s know to have, um, four, or sometimes even up to eight, like tentacles, that come out from his back, and then even at other times, as he get even closer and closer even his fingers start to extend, and more and more, and just basically look like this giant web coming around you, and some people say like, it’s like hypnotic, and like, it stuns them as it gets closer, um, or paralyzes them so they can’t move, and so the game, basically, when you’re playing it, if you see him, it kind of like, pauses you for a second, like you get--like you got to get--like screen jerks around, and gets fuzzy, and stuff, and the more you see him, the closer he can get to you. Um, the newest game of Slenderman does have its own story to it, it’s very kind of, vague, the story, and I don’t think any of has it to do with the actual Slenderman myth. [he chuckles] But, that’s the gist of everything I know, so

    Research Strategies

It is 3 a .m. and you are up, prepping for class. Again. You have reading to do for Torts, for Contracts, and for Civil Procedure, and if you fall behind even one day, you will be spending hours late at night for the next few days trying to catch up. Or, worse, you will be unprepared and that will be the day your professor will call on you. And to add to your stress, you have a research project for your legal writing class due in less than two days, and you have not even started. Your professor told you to draft a research plan before you set foot in the library or signed onto your legal research database. But with so much going on in your other classes- not to mention how very strung-out you feel from the late nights and intense workload of a first-year law student- you do not see why you should spend the time on a research plan when that research plan will not be turned in, and you will not even be graded on it. So you decide to skip the research plan and just dive in. You get results. But there seem to be a lot of them, and they don\u27t seem to be what you want. You try again, but you still aren\u27t finding what you are looking for. This research project seems overwhelming now, and the clock is ticking. Over the next couple of days, you find yourself having to put off rea ding for your other classes. Your level of panic starts rising. Why is this taking so long? Why can\u27t you find what you\u27re looking for? Are you just not cut out for law school? Maybe you don\u27t really want to do this after all. Ultimately, you turn in your research project after burning the midnight oil several nights in a row. You are not confident in your results, and you are pretty sure you hate your life- and law school. You spend the next few days catching up with your reading for your other classes, and soon enough, it\u27s time to do the next research project, which, of course, is a more complex one. So, how did skipping the research plan on that last assignment work out for you? Not so great, right? Since you want to sleep again sometime, you need to change your strategy for the next assignment. You need a good research plan. While it seems tempting to skip a research plan you do not have to turn in, you will save yourself a lot of time and effort and agony if you take the time to plan your research before you jump in, especially if you have a complex issue to research (and you will, eventually, have to research complex issues). A research plan can help you: Keep your research focused and organized Save time Prevent duplication of effort Prevent frustration Save money This chapter will discuss these benefits of a good research plan, explain why a research plan saves you time, and help you formulate a research plan that can help you get through any research project without tearing your hair out

[4]We only made five mills and the next day [arrive?] into the Valley and up to Hutching Hotel and how you hired me out to do the milking and to drive the oxen and I had never done either and I was so scared when you made the contrack that I dare not open my mouth but you said to me you can do it all right its nothing but I guess it was luckey for me that J M. went to Washington that winter. I can rember about Mrs [Sprat?] saying to me one morning after I had milked, that [buttercup?] did not give so much milk as she did when Billy milked her. and those oxen Paddy & Duke do you remember them Well I did not think I could Ever joke and drive them but I [did?] and milked too[1]Worcester MassachusettsMarch 9th 1902My dear John MuirI was extremely pleased to receive your second letter and to get so clear a description of your life and travels. it also pleased me to have you say you had not written as long a letter to any one in a long time for I had somehow gotten the idea that you had forgotten me but I see your memory is good and your letter brings our partnership days very clearly I never should forget them but what troubles me now and always has is that I did not know how to apreciate you and your teachings more. and it seems to me now that If I could have the same chance I could Improve on my past life in some respects02960 [2]You asked me for a more complete history of my past life since I left California I only wish I could give you as glowing account of myself as you have me of yours but I cant. As I wrote you in my first letter that after leaving Cal I came direct home to Rhode Island My native state I Staid with my Father about three weeks and then got a Situation for the man I am working for now and I have worked steady for thirty years with only the accostomed vacation so you see I cannot give you much more for you know what it is to work for someone. but I think in one respect I must of gotten the [start?] of you I think I got married before you did and your last letter revealed the fact that you were married but I had told all of my family when speaking[3]of you that I did think you would never get married but it seems you did have one weak spot and I am glad to hear it for that completes you as a man You must remember John that I was quite young when we were in the valley and that must excuse me for not appreciating your teachings more but you will I think give me credit for having some [sense?] to follow you and old mountaineers travels from off the plains for seven days. do you remember what a beautiful day it was the morning we left Deloneys ranch for the Yosemite and how it snowed when we were about five days out and how you and I staid in that . coffin and on the next day [8]to go to California and he wants to travel I wish you could take him on one of your travels he has got lots of [sand?] and can stand hardship as well as you and I and is a good boy I do not work as hard as I have in the past I could of been a partner but id not want it although he has made money all the time but I did not have the courage you know John my education was lacking and I thought I had better be free although he would go away for months at a time and I had full charge and everything would be all right when he would return. he has seven stores here in Worcester and I am at the head and as I say I get good pay own my house and a farm I keep a driving horse and we get about all there is to live for[5]How plain I can see all of those faces as I read them in your letter but it seems sad about [illegible] poor girl I used to feel sorry for her she would beg so hard for me to give her something to eat and she would open her mouth and I would milk into it and somehow her mother would find it out I would like to see G[illegible] Keney and have often thought I would take a trip out there and see you all J M [H?] has best you and I [go?] and with the 4th wife. but I am not surprised to learn that his first wife (Al[illegible]a) got a divorce from him for they were ill mated I always liked her only that laws of health that she practiced on herself and on Casy & [illegible]oy I never liked to see anything hungry and you know they were often02960 [6]Yes John I do remember the sunday morning that you and I took the trip up the mountain and down to the [illegible]al [illegible]il falls and reached them just as the sun set and I have often thought that in getting back into the valley that we went in places where if we could of seen it in daylight we would not of gone You always asked me when we were about to start on a tramp if I had tobacco enough to last me you said you did not want me to get short of that as it made me cross & disagreeable and I guess you were right, and another thing I remember about that tramp was that the Ends of my fingers were worn through so they bled. from feeling our way and letting myself down those granite boulders I remember how sore they were when I milked that morning[7]You say in your last that If I had staid with you you think you might of pushed me a little father along that may be and that is what I wanted someone to push me for you know I was thrown on my own resources from the age of [thirteen?] never knew what a mothers care was and although I had a good Father he could not take a mothers place but dont you think John that you can look back better than you can look ahead for as you say our fate none can foresee but I think I have done as well as the average but have had to work hard I have a good house & wife and boy & girl we never have lost any children and have got some money and have about everything we want Girl married boy I am afraid will be. by the way he wants [9]But I would like to go out to California and see you and you know I like to hunt I have got a good outfit and my son and I go once a year I dont suppose you ever will come this way but if you should or any of your family dont fail to look me up as you say I am well known here and above all dont fail to drop me a line as often as you can for I have had nothing that has done me as much good as it did to get your letters With my best respect for you and familyI am as every your friendHenry Randall#544 Pleasant StWorcester Mass02960 [10]I send to you in the mail for Photograph myself wifeBoygir
