When we fail to question in Japanese
When we pay close attention to the prosody of Wh-questions in Japanese, we discover many novel and interesting empirical puzzles that would require us to devise a much finer syntactic component of grammar. This paper addresses the issues that pose some problems to such an elaborated grammar, and offers solutions, making an appeal to the information structure and sentence processing involved in the interpretation of interrogative and focus constructions
Information Processing Models: Benefits and Limitations
This paper looks at the three main information processing models from the point of view
of researchers in confidential human factors databases. It explores conceptual problems
with two of these information processing models, and goes on to explore possible
advantages of adopting a ‘connectionist’ paradigm. Links between connectionism and
‘situated cognition’ are demonstrated. Practical work carried out using a
connectionist/situated cognition model is described, and the way in which the
‘situatedness’ of discourse can influence the kind of data that can be collected is
discussed. Finally it is argued that more emphasis should be placed in ergonomics on
sociation, situatedness and embodiment, and that this might help to deal with problems
faced in creation and interrogating databases: especially as regards the creation of
coherent and reliable ‘coding taxonomies’
Cognitive constraints and island effects
Competence-based theories of island effects play a central role in generative grammar, yet the graded nature of many syntactic islands has never been properly accounted for. Categorical syntactic accounts of island effects have persisted in spite of a wealth of data suggesting that island effects are not categorical in nature and that nonstructural manipulations that leave island structures intact can radically alter judgments of island violations. We argue here, building on work by Paul Deane, Robert Kluender, and others, that processing factors have the potential to account for this otherwise unexplained variation in acceptability judgments.
We report the results of self-paced reading experiments and controlled acceptability studies that explore the relationship between processing costs and judgments of acceptability. In each of the three self-paced reading studies, the data indicate that the processing cost of different types of island violations can be significantly reduced to a degree comparable to that of nonisland filler-gap constructions by manipulating a single nonstructural factor. Moreover, this reduction in processing cost is accompanied by significant improvements in acceptability. This evidence favors the hypothesis that island-violating constructions involve numerous processing pressures that aggregate to drive processing difficulty above a threshold, resulting in unacceptability. We examine the implications of these findings for the grammar of filler-gap dependencies

Free recall test experience potentiates strategy-driven effects of value on memory.
People tend to show better memory for information that is deemed valuable or important. By one mechanism, individuals selectively engage deeper, semantic encoding strategies for high value items (Cohen, Rissman, Suthana, Castel, & Knowlton, 2014). By another mechanism, information paired with value or reward is automatically strengthened in memory via dopaminergic projections from midbrain to hippocampus (Shohamy & Adcock, 2010). We hypothesized that the latter mechanism would primarily enhance recollection-based memory, while the former mechanism would strengthen both recollection and familiarity. We also hypothesized that providing interspersed tests during study is a key to encouraging selective engagement of strategies. To test these hypotheses, we presented participants with sets of words, and each word was associated with a high or low point value. In some experiments, free recall tests were given after each list. In all experiments, a recognition test was administered 5 minutes after the final word list. Process dissociation was accomplished via remember/know judgments at recognition, a recall test probing both item memory and memory for a contextual detail (word plurality), and a task dissociation combining a recognition test for plurality (intended to probe recollection) with a speeded item recognition test (to probe familiarity). When recall tests were administered after study lists, high value strengthened both recollection and familiarity. When memory was not tested after each study list, but rather only at the end, value increased recollection but not familiarity. Real-time Exponential Curve Fits Using Discrete Calculus
This paper presents an improved solution for curve fitting data to an exponential equation (Y = AeBt + C). This improvement is in four areas ? speed, stability, determinant processing time, and the removal of limits. The solution presented in this paper avoids iterative techniques and their stability errors by using three mathematical ideas ? discrete calculus, a special relationship (between exponential curves and the Mean Value Theorem for Derivatives), and a simple linear curve fit algorithm. This method can also be applied to fitting data to the general power law equation Y = AxB + C and the general geometric growth equation Y = AkBt + C
