Which Surrogate Works for Empirical Performance Modelling? A Case Study with Differential Evolution
It is not uncommon that meta-heuristic algorithms contain some intrinsic
parameters, the optimal configuration of which is crucial for achieving their
peak performance. However, evaluating the effectiveness of a configuration is
expensive, as it involves many costly runs of the target algorithm. Perhaps
surprisingly, it is possible to build a cheap-to-evaluate surrogate that models
the algorithm's empirical performance as a function of its parameters. Such
surrogates constitute an important building block for understanding algorithm
performance, algorithm portfolio/selection, and the automatic algorithm
configuration. In principle, many off-the-shelf machine learning techniques can
be used to build surrogates. In this paper, we take the differential evolution
(DE) as the baseline algorithm for proof-of-concept study. Regression models
are trained to model the DE's empirical performance given a parameter
configuration. In particular, we evaluate and compare four popular regression
algorithms both in terms of how well they predict the empirical performance
with respect to a particular parameter configuration, and also how well they
approximate the parameter versus the empirical performance landscapes
Techno-Economic Analysis and Optimal Control of Battery Storage for Frequency Control Services, Applied to the German Market
Optimal investment in battery energy storage systems, taking into account
degradation, sizing and control, is crucial for the deployment of battery
storage, of which providing frequency control is one of the major applications.
In this paper, we present a holistic, data-driven framework to determine the
optimal investment, size and controller of a battery storage system providing
frequency control. We optimised the controller towards minimum degradation and
electricity costs over its lifetime, while ensuring the delivery of frequency
control services compliant with regulatory requirements. We adopted a detailed
battery model, considering the dynamics and degradation when exposed to actual
frequency data. Further, we used a stochastic optimisation objective while
constraining the probability on unavailability to deliver the frequency control
service. Through a thorough analysis, we were able to decrease the amount of
data needed and thereby decrease the execution time while keeping the
approximation error within limits. Using the proposed framework, we performed a
techno-economic analysis of a battery providing 1 MW capacity in the German
primary frequency control market. Results showed that a battery rated at 1.6
MW, 1.6 MWh has the highest net present value, yet this configuration is only
profitable if costs are low enough or in case future frequency control prices
do not decline too much. It transpires that calendar ageing drives battery
degradation, whereas cycle ageing has less impact.Comment: Submitted to Applied Energ
Numerical Methods for PDE Constrained Optimization with Uncertain Data
Optimization problems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) arise in many applications in the form of optimal control, optimal design, or parameter identification problems. In most applications, parameters in the governing PDEs are not deterministic, but rather have to be modeled as random variables or, more generally, as random fields. It is crucial to capture and quantify the uncertainty in such problems rather than to simply replace the uncertain coefficients with their mean values. However, treating the uncertainty adequately and in a computationally tractable manner poses many mathematical challenges. The numerical solution of optimization problems governed by stochastic PDEs builds on mathematical subareas, which so far have been largely investigated in separate communities: Stochastic Programming, Numerical Solution of Stochastic PDEs, and PDE Constrained Optimization.
The workshop achieved an impulse towards cross-fertilization of those disciplines which also was the subject of several scientific discussions. It is to be expected that future exchange of ideas between these areas will give rise to new insights and powerful new numerical methods
