Writing Centers and Disability: Enabling Writers Through an Inclusive Philosophy
In its Position Statement on Disability and Writing Centers, the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) recognizes and emphasizes the relationship between writing centers and disability and āencourages scholarship that explores the ways disability intersects with writing center work.ā The IWCA further encourages writing centers to be inclusive to all writers by adopting ācommunication that takes into account various learning styles or ways of processing language.ā We too, argue that writing centers should be welcoming environments for all writers and that they should engage with their writers as unique beings, making accessible to them the individuation of instruction and support. Writing centers should be spaces where the multiple barriers that students experience in their writing are addressed and a variety of options are provided.University Writing Cente

State and national education initiatives prescribe diverse thinking through age-appropriate content area literacy tasks at all grade levels. History education researchers encourage teachers to intentionally integrate content, methods, and assessment in discipline-specific ways. This paperātargeting middle level and secondary studentsāproposes a fusion between scrutiny of juxtaposed texts, evidentiary writing, and creative expression of newly generated understandings. This model elicits studentsā content area literacy through close reading and text-based writing; it evokes studentsā criticality through historical thinking and creation. Interested teachers are offered a representative sample of student work

Integrating Google Apps and Google Chromebooks Into the Core Curriculum: A Phenomenological Study of the Lived Experience of Public School Teachers
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of public school teachers using Google Suite for Education with Google Chromebooks integrated into the core curriculum. With the adoption of Common Core standards by 46 states, the increased use of technology has occurred due to standards that integrate technology. Google has created a free cloud-based educational suite for K-12 and Higher education institutions. The central research question that guided the study was: How do grade 4-8 public school core content teachers perceive the experience of using Google Suite for Education with Chromebooks in the classroom? The theory that guided the study was Albert Banduraās social cognitive theory (1986). The theory places an emphasis on three main factors influencing how one learns from personal, social, and environmental. Self-efficacy as part of the learning theory plays an important role in discovering teacher willingness to integrate technology in the classroom. The participants were 13 grade 4-8 public school core content teachers. Data collection included individual interviews, focus group interviews, and online journals. A questionnaire was used to purposefully select participants. Semi structured interviews and focus group interviews were recorded and transcribed as well as online journals analyzed through significant statements resulting in the following four major themes: teacher attitudes and instruction, Chromebook accessibility and connectivity, student learning, and inconsistent training and support. The results identified the essence of the shared experience of the study participants
Social media analytics: a survey of techniques, tools and platforms
This paper is written for (social science) researchers seeking to analyze the wealth of social media now available. It presents a comprehensive review of software tools for social networking media, wikis, really simple syndication feeds, blogs, newsgroups, chat and news feeds. For completeness, it also includes introductions to social media scraping, storage, data cleaning and sentiment analysis. Although principally a review, the paper also provides a methodology and a critique of social media tools. Analyzing social media, in particular Twitter feeds for sentiment analysis, has become a major research and business activity due to the availability of web-based application programming interfaces (APIs) provided by Twitter, Facebook and News services. This has led to an āexplosionā of data services, software tools for scraping and analysis and social media analytics platforms. It is also a research area undergoing rapid change and evolution due to commercial pressures and the potential for using social media data for computational (social science) research. Using a simple taxonomy, this paper provides a review of leading software tools and how to use them to scrape, cleanse and analyze the spectrum of social media. In addition, it discussed the requirement of an experimental computational environment for social media research and presents as an illustration the system architecture of a social media (analytics) platform built by University College London. The principal contribution of this paper is to provide an overview (including code fragments) for scientists seeking to utilize social media scraping and analytics either in their research or business. The data retrieval techniques that are presented in this paper are valid at the time of writing this paper (June 2014), but they are subject to change since social media data scraping APIs are rapidly changing
