Christa Wolf, Kein Ort, nirgends : an analysis : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in German at Massey University
Some German throughout.1961 was an historic year for the German Democratic Republic. The erection of the Berlin Wall effectively sealed off East from West. In that same year Christa Wolf published her first work of fiction: Moskauer Novelle.1 1.Christa Wolf, Moskauer Novelle in:
Romanzeitung 204 (Ber1in, 1961), pp.57-95.
As part of an East German medical delegation visiting Moscow in 1959, Vera Brauer meets and falls in love with Pawel Koschkin, a Russian interpreter. Victims of fascism (Vera of Hitlerism, Pawel of Stalinism), the two characters discuss the future socialism will bring: Bei allem aber wird er (der Mensch) - und das wird seine grösste Leistung sein - kein Roboter werden, kein perfektioniertes Ungetüm, sondern endlich: Mensch.2 2.Ibid p. 75.
Christa Wolf affirms that, in the future, socialism should become orientated towards humanism (in the general sense of the word) and serve the individual to realize himself. This is the central theme of all Christa Wolf's works.3 3.Cf.
She, however, does not politicize literature, although political overtones may occur. Hers is a human message to fellow human beings: Was ist das: Dieses Zu-sich-selber-Kommen des Menschen?4 4.Christa Wolf takes these words from Johannes Becher,
a former cultural minister of the German Democratic Republic. They serve as a motto for Christa Wolf's later work Nachdenken über Christa T. (Neuwied and Berlin, 1969).
Territoriality in educational settings : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Education
The concern of this thesis was territorial behaviours in classroom settings, namely: 1. The teacher's use of geographic space, and 2. Verbal interaction patterns resulting from teacher - pupil exchanges. One expectation held was that the teacher would occupy a particular location in preference to all other areas. Another expection was that the centre of the classroom would be the focus for interaction between the teacher and pupils, with diminishing numbers of verbal exchanges toward the outer edges of the room. The effects of changing the pupils' location was also investigated it being thought that following such change the number of interactions received by the pupils would vary considerably. Observations were made in two classrooms and data collected. A trained Observer recorded the teacher's use of classroom space and the pupil 'targets' of all verbal exchanges between teacher and individual pupils. The verbal behaviour of the teacher was recorded and later encoded into five qualitative categories. Analysis of these data revealed that: (a) both teachers occupied the centre front of the room in preference to all other areas. (b) the distribution of verbal interactions by the teachers was uneven, and (c) the changing of pupil location had inconclusive effects upon the numbers of verbal exchanges they participated in. The teacher's verbal behaviour, when considered qualitatively, was found to be little affected by the position occupied by the teacher and was democratically distributed over the classroom
Firm Heterogeneity and Wages Under Different Bargaining Regimes: Does a Centralised Union Care for Low-productivity Firms?
This paper studies the relationship between wages and the degree of firm heterogeneity in a given industry under different wage setting structures. To derive testable hypotheses, we set up a theoretical model that analyses the sensitivity of wages to the variability in productivity conditions in a unionsised oligopoly framework. The model distinguishes centralised and decentralised wage determination. The theoretical results predict wages to be negatively associated with the degree of firm heterogeneity under centralised wage-setting, as unions internalise negative externalities of a wage increase for low-productivity firms. We test this prediction using a linked employeremployee panel data set from the German mining and manufacturing sector. Consistent with our hypotheses, the empirical results suggest that under industry-level bargaining workers in more heterogeneous sectors receive lower wages than workers in more homogeneous sectors. In contrast, the degree of firm heterogeneity is found to have no negative impact on wages in uncovered firms and under firm-level contracts. --Wage-Setting Structure,Unions,Oligopoly,Linked Employer-Employee Data
Authorship as cultural performance: new perspectives in authorship studies
This article proposes a performative model of authorship, based on the historical alternation between predominantly 'weak' and 'strong' author concepts and related practices of writing, publication and reading. Based on this model, we give a brief overview of the historical development of such author concepts in English literature from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. We argue for a more holistic approach to authorship within a cultural topography, comprising social contexts, technological and media factors, and other cultural developments, such as the distinction between privacy and the public sphere
