    Advanced Turboprop Project

    Get PDF
At the direction of Congress, a task force headed by NASA was organized in 1975 to identify potential fuel saving concepts for aviation. The result was the Aircraft Energy Efficiency (ACEE) Program implemented in 1976. An important part of the program was the development of advanced turboprop technology for Mach 0.65 to 0.85 applications having the potential fuel saving of 30 to 50 percent relative to existing turbofan engines. A historical perspective is presented of the development and the accomplishments that brought the turboprop to successful flight tests in 1986 and 1987

Fluid machines: Expanding the limits, past and future

    Get PDF
During the 40 yr period from 1940 to 1980, the capabilities and operating limits of fluid machines were greatly extended. This was due to a research program, carried out to meet the needs of aerospace programs. Some of the events are reviewed. Overall advancements of all machinery components are discussed followed by a detailed examination of technology advancements in axial compressors and pumps. Future technology needs are suggested

Design and Experimental Validation of a Ducted Counter-rotating Axial-flow Fans System

    Get PDF
An experimental study on the design of counter-rotating axial-flow fans was carried out. The fans were designed using an inverse method. In particular, the system is designed to have a pure axial discharge flow. The counter-rotating fans operate in a ducted-flow configuration and the overall performances are measured in a normalized test bench. The rotation rate of each fan is independently controlled. The relative axial spacing between fans can vary from 17% to 310%. The results show that the efficiency is strongly increased compared to a conventional rotor or to a rotor-stator stage. The effects of varying the rotation rates ratio on the overall performances are studied and show that the system has a very flexible use, with a large patch of high efficient operating points in the parameter space. The increase of axial spacing causes only a small decrease of the efficiencyComment: accepted in Journal of Fluid Engineerin
