    Adaptive Robust Control of Biomass Fuel Co-Combustion Process

    The share of biomass in energy production is constantly growing. This is caused by environmental and industry standards and EU guidelines. Biomass is used in the process of co-firing in large power plants and industrial installations. In the existing power stations, biomass is milled and burned simultaneously with coal. However, low-emission combustion techniques, including biomass co-combustion, have some negative side effects that can be split into two categories. The direct effects influence the process control stability, whereas the indirect ones on combustion installations via increased corrosion or boiler slagging. The effects can be minimised using additional information about the process. The proper combustion diagnosis as well as an appropriate, robust control system ought to be applied. The chapter is devoted to the analysis of modern, robust control techniques for complex power engineering applications

    The water-electricity nexus in California: drought-induced risk to thermal electricity generation

    Investigating the possibility that drought might limit the water supply needed for thermal electricity generation in California, power plant water consumption data was compared to urban and agricultural consumptive demands to identify areas where power plants might contribute to regional water stress. To identify areas where power plants might be impacted by water stress, regional power plant, urban, and agricultural water demands were also compared to the available water supply. A list of power plants that would contribute most to regional water scarcity (individually and in aggregate) was highlighted, based on the plant’s water consumption volume, water-intensity, and water source. A list of at-risk power plants, located in high water stress regions, was highlighted, based on the water source consumed by the plant. Recommendations were offered for avoiding water stress-related issues at power plants contributing most to regional water stress, or located in regions of high water stress. Numerous data quality issues were also highlighted, and recommendations proposed for mitigating those issues. Numerous studies have looked into the water-intensity of electricity generation in California, but lack of available data from the state’s power plants have limited these studies to using literature estimates from previous studies, or to forming estimates based off of “representative” power plants. This study is believed to be the first to calculate the water-intensity of California’s electricity generation infrastructure at the individual power plant scale using water use and electricity generation data reported to the California Energy Commission

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    Performance based diagnostics of a twin shaft aeroderivative gas turbine: water wash scheduling

    Aeroderivative gas turbines are used all over the world for different applications as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), Oil and Gas, ship propulsion and others. They combine flexibility with high efficiencies, low weight and small footprint, making them attractive where power density is paramount as off shore Oil and Gas or ship propulsion. In Western Europe they are widely used in CHP small and medium applications thanks to their maintainability and efficiency. Reliability, Availability and Performance are key parameters when considering plant operation and maintenance. The accurate diagnose of Performance is fundamental for the plant economics and maintenance planning. There has been a lot of work around units like the LM2500® , a gas generator with an aerodynamically coupled gas turbine, but nothing has been found by the author for the LM6000® . Water wash, both on line or off line, is an important maintenance practice impacting Reliability, Availability and Performance. This Thesis aims to select and apply a suitable diagnostic technique to help establishing the schedule for off line water wash on a specific model of this engine type. After a revision of Diagnostic Methods Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been chosen as diagnostic tool. There was no WebEngine model available of the unit under study so the first step of setting the tool has been creating it. The last step has been testing of ANN as a suitable diagnostic tool. Several have been configured, trained and tested and one has been chosen based on its slightly better response. Finally, conclusions are discussed and recommendations for further work laid out

    The research objectives of the 280 projects placed under contract in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) 1990 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 program are described. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses in response to NASA's 1990 SBIR Phase 1 Program Solicitation. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 280, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. The document also includes Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference in the 1990 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA field center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number
