    Supporting End-User Development through a New Composition Model: An Empirical Study

    End-user development (EUD) is much hyped, and its impact has outstripped even the most optimistic forecasts. Even so, the vision of end users programming their own solutions has not yet materialized. This will continue to be so unless we in both industry and the research community set ourselves the ambitious challenge of devising end to end an end-user application development model for developing a new age of EUD tools. We have embarked on this venture, and this paper presents the main insights and outcomes of our research and development efforts as part of a number of successful EU research projects. Our proposal not only aims to reshape software engineering to meet the needs of EUD but also to refashion its components as solution building blocks instead of programs and software developments. This way, end users will really be empowered to build solutions based on artefacts akin to their expertise and understanding of ideal solution

    Working Memory in Writing: Empirical Evidence From the Dual-Task Technique

    The dual-task paradigm recently played a major role in understanding the role of working memory in writing. By reviewing recent findings in this field of research, this article highlights how the use of the dual-task technique allowed studying processing and short-term storage functions of working memory involved in writing. With respect to processing functions of working memory (namely, attentional and executive functions), studies investigated resources allocation, step-by-step management and parallel coordination of the writing processes. With respect to short-term storage in working memory, experiments mainly attempted to test Kellogg's (1996) proposals on the relationship between the writing processes and the slave systems of working memory. It is concluded that the dual-task technique revealed fruitful in understanding the relationship between writing and working memory

    Modelling data intensive web sites with OntoWeaver

    This paper illustrates the OntoWeaver modelling approach, which relies on a set of comprehensive site ontologies to model all aspects of data intensive web sites and thus offers high level support for the design and development of data-intensive web sites. In particular, the OntoWeaver site ontologies comprise two components: a site view ontology and a presentation ontology. The site view ontology provides meta-models to allow for the composition of sophisticated site views, which allow end users to navigate and manipulate the underlying domain databases. The presentation ontology abstracts the look and feel for site views and makes it possible for the visual appearance and layout to be specified at a high level of abstractio

    Developing front-end Web 2.0 technologies to access services, content and things in the future Internet

    The future Internet is expected to be composed of a mesh of interoperable web services accessible from all over the web. This approach has not yet caught on since global user?service interaction is still an open issue. This paper states one vision with regard to next-generation front-end Web 2.0 technology that will enable integrated access to services, contents and things in the future Internet. In this paper, we illustrate how front-ends that wrap traditional services and resources can be tailored to the needs of end users, converting end users into prosumers (creators and consumers of service-based applications). To do this, we propose an architecture that end users without programming skills can use to create front-ends, consult catalogues of resources tailored to their needs, easily integrate and coordinate front-ends and create composite applications to orchestrate services in their back-end. The paper includes a case study illustrating that current user-centred web development tools are at a very early stage of evolution.     Modelling the components of binaries in Hyades: The dependence of the mixing-length parameter on stellar mass

    We present our findings based on a detailed analysis for the binaries of the Hyades, in which the masses of the components are well known. We fit the models of components of a binary system to the observations so as to give the observed total V and B-V of that system and the observed slope of the main-sequence in the corresponding parts. According to our findings, there is a very definite relationship between the mixing-length parameter and the stellar mass. The fitting formula for this relationship can be given as alpha=9.19(M/Msun0.74)0.0536.65alpha = 9.19 (M/M_sun-0.74)^{0.053}-6.65, which is valid for stellar masses greater than 0.77 M_sun. While no strict information is gathered for the chemical composition of the cluster, as a result of degeneracy in the colour-magnitude diagram, by adopting Z=0.033 and using models for the components of 70 Tau and theta^2 Tau we find the hydrogen abundance to be X=0.676 and the age to be 670 Myr. If we assume that Z=0.024, then X=0.718 and the age is 720 Myr. Our findings concerning the mixing length parameter are valid for both sets of the solution. For both components of the active binary system V818 Tau, the differences between radii of the models with Z=0.024 and the observed radii are only about 4 percent. More generally, the effective temperatures of the models of low mass stars in the binary systems studied are in good agreement with those determined by spectroscopic methods.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
