    Firmware enhancements for BYOD-aware network security

    In today’s connected world, users migrate within a complex set of networks, including, but not limited to, 3G and 4G (LTE) services provided by mobile operators, Wi-Fi hotspots in private and public places, as well as wireless and/or wired LAN access in business and home environments. Following the widely expanding Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach, many public and educational institutions have begun to encourage customers and students to use their own devices at all times. While this may be cost-effective in terms of decreased investments in hardware and consequently lower maintenance fees on a long-term basis, it may also involve some security risks. In particular, many users are often connected to more than one network and/or communication service provider at the same time, for example to a 3G/4G mobile network and to a Wi-Fi. In a BYOD setting, an infected device or a rogue one can turn into an unwanted gateway, causing a security breach by leaking information across networks. Aiming at investigating in greater detail the implications of BYOD on network security in private and business settings we are building a framework for experiments with mobile routers both in home and business networks. This is a continuation of our earlier work on communications and services with enhanced security for network appliances

    An overview of ADSL homed nepenthes honeypots in Western Australia

    This paper outlines initial analysis from research in progress into ADSL homed Nepenthes honeypots. One of the Nepenthes honeypots prime objective in this research was the collection of malware for analysis and dissection. A further objective is the analysis of risks that are circulating within ISP networks in Western Australian. What differentiates Nepenthes from many traditional honeypot designs it that is has been engineered from a distributed network philosophy. The program allows distribution of results across a network of sensors and subsequent aggregation of malware statistics readily within a large network environment

    The fusion of law and information technology

    In information society, legal norm communications have been never established in certain fields for a long time. That is, a few legal norms have never obeyed in the fields. Above all, legal norms which relate to data protection, information contents and information security, would often infringed. Most violation would be conducted by using information technologies. Information technologies would often be used in these infringing incidents. It can be said that these infringing incidents would have never been conducted without information technology. These infringing incidents include hacking actions, personal data abuse, personal information disclosure, unauthorized access, infringing copyrights, infringing privacy rights, and so on. A way of preventing those infringements is to raise the level of punishment against the violators. But, it will prove to be disappointing. Furthermore, it would be an ex post facto measure to the last. It would be needed to invent an ex ante measure, if it is possible. As the ex ante measure, the author proposes a fusion of law and information technology. An information technology will lead people to a lawful deed when they conduct actions in using computers and networks. They say that information technology cures information technology. After all, the fusion will aim at realizing laws, and it will contribute to recover a social justice
