    Cloud computing datacenters currently provide millions of virtual machines in highly dynamic Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) markets. As a first step on implementing algorithms previously proposed by the authors for Virtual Machine Placement (VMP) in a real- world IaaS middleware, this work presents an experimental comparison of these algorithms against current algorithms considered for solving VMP problems in OpenStack. Several experiments considering scenario- based simulations for uncertainty modelling demonstrate that the proposed algorithms present promising results for its implementation towards real-world operations.     Evaluation of two-phase virtual machine placement algorithms for green cloud datacenters

    Cloud Computing Datacenters represent a power-intensive industry with well-known economical and ecological challenges. This work focusses on Virtual Machine Placement (VMP) problems as a valid alternative to address mentioned challenges. An experimental evaluation of 36 VMP optimization algorithms for power consumption minimization is presented. Algorithms were evaluated under uncertainty of 4 different dynamic parameters, considering 400 experimental scenarios and taking into account an average objective function cost as evaluation criterion.     Climbing Up Cloud Nine: Performance Enhancement Techniques for Cloud Computing Environments

    With the transformation of cloud computing technologies from an attractive trend to a business reality, the need is more pressing than ever for efficient cloud service management tools and techniques. As cloud technologies continue to mature, the service model, resource allocation methodologies, energy efficiency models and general service management schemes are not yet saturated. The burden of making this all tick perfectly falls on cloud providers. Surely, economy of scale revenues and leveraging existing infrastructure and giant workforce are there as positives, but it is far from straightforward operation from that point. Performance and service delivery will still depend on the providers’ algorithms and policies which affect all operational areas. With that in mind, this thesis tackles a set of the more critical challenges faced by cloud providers with the purpose of enhancing cloud service performance and saving on providers’ cost. This is done by exploring innovative resource allocation techniques and developing novel tools and methodologies in the context of cloud resource management, power efficiency, high availability and solution evaluation. Optimal and suboptimal solutions to the resource allocation problem in cloud data centers from both the computational and the network sides are proposed. Next, a deep dive into the energy efficiency challenge in cloud data centers is presented. Consolidation-based and non-consolidation-based solutions containing a novel dynamic virtual machine idleness prediction technique are proposed and evaluated. An investigation of the problem of simulating cloud environments follows. Available simulation solutions are comprehensively evaluated and a novel design framework for cloud simulators covering multiple variations of the problem is presented. Moreover, the challenge of evaluating cloud resource management solutions performance in terms of high availability is addressed. An extensive framework is introduced to design high availability-aware cloud simulators and a prominent cloud simulator (GreenCloud) is extended to implement it. Finally, real cloud application scenarios evaluation is demonstrated using the new tool. The primary argument made in this thesis is that the proposed resource allocation and simulation techniques can serve as basis for effective solutions that mitigate performance and cost challenges faced by cloud providers pertaining to resource utilization, energy efficiency, and client satisfaction

    Cloud brokering : nouveaux services de valeur ajoutée et politique de prix

    Cloud brokering is a service paradigm that provides interoperability and portability of applications across multiple Cloud providers. The attractiveness of Cloud brokering relies on the new services and extended computing facilities that enhance or complement those already offered by isolated Cloud providers. These services provide new value to Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs) and large enterprises and make Cloud providers more competitive. Nowadays, at the infrastructure level, Cloud brokers act as an intermediary between the end-users and the Cloud providers. A Cloud broker provides a single point for service consumption in order to avoid vendor lock-in, increase application resilience, provide a unified billing, and simplify governance, procurement and settlement processes across multiple Cloud providers. In the future, Cloud brokers will provide advanced valueadded services and will use attractive pricing models to capture potential Cloud consumers. The aim of this thesis is to propose advanced value-added services and a pricing model for Cloud brokers.Le « Cloud brokering » est un paradigme de service qui fournit interopérabilité et portabilité des applications à travers plusieurs fournisseurs de Cloud. Les nouveaux services et capacités étendues qui améliorent ou complètent celles déjà offertes par les fournisseurs de Cloud sont la caractéristique principale des « Cloud brokers ». Actuellement, d’un point de vue de l’infrastructure Cloud, les Cloud brokers jouent un rôle d’agents intermédiaires entre les utilisateurs et les fournisseurs, agissant ainsi comme un point commun pour la consommation des services Cloud. Parmi les avantages les plus notables liés à ce point d’accès commun on trouve : l’augmentation de la résilience en allouant l’infrastructure chez de multiples fournisseurs ; la délivrance d’une facturation unifiée ; la simplification des processus de gouvernance ; l’approvisionnement et le règlement à travers de multiples fournisseurs. Dans le futur, les Cloud brokers fourniront des services avancés de valeur ajoutée et vendront des services Cloud en utilisant d’attractives politiques de prix.     Improving Access and Mental Health for Youth Through Virtual Models of Care

    The overall objective of this research is to evaluate the use of a mobile health smartphone application (app) to improve the mental health of youth between the ages of 14–25 years, with symptoms of anxiety/depression. This project includes 115 youth who are accessing outpatient mental health services at one of three hospitals and two community agencies. The youth and care providers are using eHealth technology to enhance care. The technology uses mobile questionnaires to help promote self-assessment and track changes to support the plan of care. The technology also allows secure virtual treatment visits that youth can participate in through mobile devices. This longitudinal study uses participatory action research with mixed methods. The majority of participants identified themselves as Caucasian (66.9%). Expectedly, the demographics revealed that Anxiety Disorders and Mood Disorders were highly prevalent within the sample (71.9% and 67.5% respectively).
