    Privacy-preserving data mashup model for trading person-specific information

    © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Business enterprises adopt cloud integration services to improve collaboration with their trading partners and to deliver quality data mining services. Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) mashup allows multiple enterprises to integrate their data upon the demand of consumers. Business enterprises face challenges not only to protect private data over the cloud but also to legally adhere to privacy compliance rules when trading person-specific data. They need an effective privacy-preserving business model to deal with the challenges in emerging markets. We propose a model that allows the collaboration of multiple enterprises for integrating their data and derives the contribution of each data provider by valuating the incorporated cost factors. This model serves as a guide for business decision-making, such as estimating the potential risk and finding the optimal value for publishing mashup data. Experiments on real-life data demonstrate that our approach can identify the optimal value in data mashup for different privacy models, including K-anonymity, LKC-privacy, and ∈-differential privacy, with various anonymization algorithms and privacy parameters

    Data Disparity: Tiered Pricing as an Alternative to Consumer IoT Data Privacy Regulations

    In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) devices have exploded on the consumer scene. These emerging products bring new technological capabilities into our everyday lives. IoT is projected to contribute anywhere from $4-11 trillion to the global economy and companies are investing billions of dollars into the technology. However, with the vast amount of data that IoT devices collect, consumers are burdening the risk of having their personal data breached or sold to third parties. This paper first identifies why consumers may be weary or willing towards providing their personal data and how unconscious biases in the purchasing process cause consumers to misperceive their level of risk. Then, the impact of potential regulations that may be enacted are analyzed. Finally, a study is conducted that tests consumers’ purchasing behavior around a smart speaker that is offered under a three-tier price model providing three different levels of data privacy. From this study, a two-tier price model is proposed as an effective measure towards ensuring greater equality in the personal data trade between consumers and sellers, and a proactive alternative to regulations that may create new challenges for both parties

    Building envelope design as a contribution for improvement of urban spaces and social housing environmental quality

    The design of building envelope and the definition of its elements, can influence both the quality of the external spaces perception and the living standard referred to internal building spaces. This improvement depends by the planning of some component design. Particularly, solar shadings and integrated plant solutions, also thanks to an increasing consequential interest about the issue and the legislative and normative evolution, represent factors able to be involved both in the performance and morphological quality of building envelope (improvement of energy efficiency and living quality of internal spaces), which can influence the perception of environment. A study about this questions has been conducted through the elaboration of a system of Best Pratices, a Code of Practice, for the new Plans of Zone of Rome Municipality. The indications contained in the Code takes in examination the integration-mitigation and facilities connection of solar collectors in the building design, and the possibility of integration between solar shading and collector elements, customized like a support tool for the sustainable design of building envelope. The design of building envelope, reported to morphological and technological issues, can assume particular importance in the definition of living quality. Design of closures, developed through some indications referred to its technological components, can influence both the quality perception of external living spaces through the morphological definition of building, and the life quality of internal spaces by the implementation of energy efficiency of building system. Solar shading in particular, also thanks to the increasing consequential interest in the evolution of legislation about the argument, more in the future will represent a fundamental element for design and the increment of performance and morphological quality of building enclosure

    Money Walks: A Human-Centric Study on the Economics of Personal Mobile Data

    In the context of a myriad of mobile apps which collect personally identifiable information (PII) and a prospective market place of personal data, we investigate a user-centric monetary valuation of mobile PII. During a 6-week long user study in a living lab deployment with 60 participants, we collected their daily valuations of 4 categories of mobile PII (communication, e.g. phonecalls made/received, applications, e.g. time spent on different apps, location and media, photos taken) at three levels of complexity (individual data points, aggregated statistics and processed, i.e. meaningful interpretations of the data). In order to obtain honest valuations, we employ a reverse second price auction mechanism. Our findings show that the most sensitive and valued category of personal information is location. We report statistically significant associations between actual mobile usage, personal dispositions, and bidding behavior. Finally, we outline key implications for the design of mobile services and future markets of personal data.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures.     Vision and Valuation of a Citizen-Centric Shared Information Portal

    The administrative burden the government puts on citizens is substantial, whereas, generally speaking, service levels are low and a ‘customer’ orientation is lacking. There is a growing understanding that e-government can play an important role in tackling these issues by better exchange of information and electronic availability. This paper reports on the development and evaluation of an e-government vision as part of a strategic planning trajectory for the social security sector and other government agencies in the Netherlands. The vision approaches governmental service delivery from the citizen viewpoint and helps governmental organisations to take service- and citizen orientation to a higher level. The concepts used in the vision were tested by boardroom sessions as well as a survey, and has become the guiding principles for a number of e-government developments
