Assessing Impact of Medium-Sized Institution Digital Cultural Heritage on Wikimedia Projects

    Get PDF
Cultural heritage institutions with digital resources, ranging from digitized collections to online finding aids, have increasingly pursued creative solutions to make their collections more open and reach more users. One strategy for increasing access to digital cultural heritage resources is the addition of links or uploaded media to the Wikimedia environment. However, existing literature detailing the process and results of such strategies centers primarily on the work of large research institutions and focuses on web analytics to show success of such projects. It is unclear if smaller institutions with niche and focused collections will see the same results as many of these programs have reported. There is also little evaluation of other means of impact for cultural heritage institutions linking their holdings to Wikimedia products, such as reuse of images or information published to Wikimedia by cultural heritage institutions. In order to contribute to the knowledge gap in this area of research, this article details a case study in linking and uploading digital assets from a medium sized liberal arts college to Wikimedia projects, and assesses impact via web traffic, wiki reuse, and image reuse. The details of this research include concrete examples which should allow for easily reproducible assessment strategies for other institutions to implement

Análisis de tipos de descripción de fotografía antigua en Wikimedia Commons

This paper reviews, using a descriptive approach, the characteristics of analysis and description of the ancient photography available on Wikimedia Commons. Six collections have been selected, provided by GLAM institutions. On a selection of 60 images, it is checked if they have been described following the Dublin Core, ISAD (G) or Europeana Data Model metadata schemas. The results obtained allow to affirm that description standards and metadata schemas are not applied. The development of semantic labeling in Wikimedia Commons may be an approach that offers a solution to these deficiencies

Book chapter preprint. Chapter published (2018) in "Leveraging Wikipedia: Connecting Communities of Knowledge" (pp. 197-213). Chicago, IL: ALA Editions.Wikipedia has been in existence for 16 years, but it was not until recently that GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) institutions started to see it as a trusted source and one they were interested in contributing to. Libraries and archives, in particular, have been slowly embracing the idea of contributing to Wikipedia, often motivated by the prospect of increasing the visibility and impact of their distinctive collections, which have been carefully curated by librarians and archivists alike. Different approaches have been taken by libraries and archives when it comes to contributing to Wikipedia. Some institutions have focused on adding links to Wikipedia articles in order to point back to their unique archival collections, whereas others have concentrated on enhancing the content of existing articles. Another way in which librarians and archivists can work together to share our collections is to collaborate on projects to enrich and repurpose the metadata that has already been created to describe them. The University of Miami Libraries took this approach and developed a tool to facilitate the creation of Wikipedia articles using relevant metadata from the libraries’ finding aids (documents that describe the scope, content, and context of archival collections). In this chapter, we will introduce the RAMP (Remixing Archival Metadata Project) editor and share our experience working on a pilot project conducted to test its viability

Increasing the Discoverability of Digital Collections Using Wikipedia: The Pitt Experience

During the Fall 2013 academic semester at the University of Pittsburgh, two undergraduate history majors performed a Wikipedia internship in the University Library System’s Archives Service Center and Special Collections Department. The purpose was to enhance the discoverability of Pitt’s digital collections and finding aids by creating links from Wikipedia articles to relevant content held by the library’s specialized collection units as well as to generally improve the quality of articles by adding additional information. By editing nearly 100 articles in Wikipedia, the interns developed their own effective strategies to perform this work and learned how to use and edit Wikipedia efficiently, how to navigate library resources effectively, how to decide what types of content would be valuable to add, and how to present new and respectable information. As a result, usage of Pitt’s online digitized collections and finding aids appears to have increased.</jats:p

Wikimedia Commons has become a reference repository for old photography, due to the development of projects to release digitized material by memory institutions. These materials can be used, modified and distributed freely, facilitating culture access and enjoyment, scientific research, and cultural creation. This work deals with the OpenGLAM notion and projects, the activities that are carried out in Wikimedia Commons, and the characteristics and problematic of the information and archival management of the material
