REAL-TIME SIGNAL PROCESSING FOR FLYING HEIGHT MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL IN HARD DRIVES SUBJECT TO SHOCK AND VIBRATION

head disk spacing variation measurement under vibration conditions. This is carried out
by theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental study. The first method
(amplitude detection) provides a simple way to study the head disk spacing change. The
second method ( PW50 parameter estimation) can be used effectively for real-time
spacing variation measurement in normally operated hard disk drives, primarily in low
frequency spacing variation conditions. The third method (thermal signal detection), on
the other hand, is more effective and suitable for high frequency spacing variation
measurement. By combining the PW50 estimation and thermal signal detection
methods, a noval spacing variation detection method for the whole frequency range is
constructed. This combined signal detection method not only has been used to study the
head disk spacing variation itself, but also has the potential of being used for real time
flying height control.
Analytical models are developed for head disk assembly and head position servo control
mechanisms to analyse the operation failure of hard disk drives under vibration
conditions. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show their good agreement
with experimental results.
A novel active flying height control method is proposed to suppress the flying height or
head-disk spacing variation in hard disk drives under vibration conditions. Simulation
results show that this active flying height control can effectively suppress the head-disk
spacing variation, therefore the performance and reliability of HDDs can be well
improved when working in vibration conditions: The method has a good potential to be
applied to future ruggedized hard disk drives
Simulation verification techniques study
Results are summarized of the simulation verification techniques study which consisted of two tasks: to develop techniques for simulator hardware checkout and to develop techniques for simulation performance verification (validation). The hardware verification task involved definition of simulation hardware (hardware units and integrated simulator configurations), survey of current hardware self-test techniques, and definition of hardware and software techniques for checkout of simulator subsystems. The performance verification task included definition of simulation performance parameters (and critical performance parameters), definition of methods for establishing standards of performance (sources of reference data or validation), and definition of methods for validating performance. Both major tasks included definition of verification software and assessment of verification data base impact. An annotated bibliography of all documents generated during this study is provided

A list and summary description of all Johnson Space Center electronic laboratory and photographic laboratory capabilities available to earth resources division personnel for processing earth resources data are provided. The electronic capabilities pertain to those facilities and systems that use electronic and/or photographic products as output. The photographic capabilities pertain to equipment that uses photographic images as input and electronic and/or table summarizes processing steps. A general hardware description is presented for each of the data processing systems, and the titles of computer programs are used to identify the capabilities and data flow
Conceptual design study of a Harrier V/STOL research aircraft
MCAIR recently completed a conceptual design study to define modification approaches to, and derive planning prices for the conversion of a two place Harrier to a V/STOL control, display and guidance research aircraft. Control concepts such as rate damping, attitude stabilization, velocity command, and cockpit controllers are to be demonstrated. Display formats will also be investigated, and landing, navigation and guidance systems flight tested. The rear cockpit is modified such that it can be quickly adapted to faithfully simulate the controls, displays and handling qualities of a Type A or Type B V/STOL. The safety pilot always has take command capability. The modifications studied fall into two categories: basic modifications and optional modifications. Technical descriptions of the basic modifications and of the optional modifications are presented. The modification plan and schedule as well as the test plan and schedule are presented. The failure mode and effects analysis, aircraft performance, aircraft weight, and aircraft support are discussed
Studies of human dynamic space orientation using techniques of control theory
Studies of human orientation and manual control in high order systems are summarized. Data cover techniques for measuring and altering orientation perception, role of non-visual motion sensors, particularly the vestibular and tactile sensors, use of motion cues in closed loop control of simple stable and unstable systems, and advanced computer controlled display systems
Application of advanced technology to space automation
Automated operations in space provide the key to optimized mission design and data acquisition at minimum cost for the future. The results of this study strongly accentuate this statement and should provide further incentive for immediate development of specific automtion technology as defined herein. Essential automation technology requirements were identified for future programs. The study was undertaken to address the future role of automation in the space program, the potential benefits to be derived, and the technology efforts that should be directed toward obtaining these benefits
