A General Framework for Representing, Reasoning and Querying with Annotated Semantic Web Data
We describe a generic framework for representing and reasoning with annotated
Semantic Web data, a task becoming more important with the recent increased
amount of inconsistent and non-reliable meta-data on the web. We formalise the
annotated language, the corresponding deductive system and address the query
answering problem. Previous contributions on specific RDF annotation domains
are encompassed by our unified reasoning formalism as we show by instantiating
it on (i) temporal, (ii) fuzzy, and (iii) provenance annotations. Moreover, we
provide a generic method for combining multiple annotation domains allowing to
represent, e.g. temporally-annotated fuzzy RDF. Furthermore, we address the
development of a query language -- AnQL -- that is inspired by SPARQL,
including several features of SPARQL 1.1 (subqueries, aggregates, assignment,
solution modifiers) along with the formal definitions of their semantics
Learning Sentence-internal Temporal Relations
In this paper we propose a data intensive approach for inferring
sentence-internal temporal relations. Temporal inference is relevant for
practical NLP applications which either extract or synthesize temporal
information (e.g., summarisation, question answering). Our method bypasses the
need for manual coding by exploiting the presence of markers like after", which
overtly signal a temporal relation. We first show that models trained on main
and subordinate clauses connected with a temporal marker achieve good
performance on a pseudo-disambiguation task simulating temporal inference
(during testing the temporal marker is treated as unseen and the models must
select the right marker from a set of possible candidates). Secondly, we assess
whether the proposed approach holds promise for the semi-automatic creation of
temporal annotations. Specifically, we use a model trained on noisy and
approximate data (i.e., main and subordinate clauses) to predict
intra-sentential relations present in TimeBank, a corpus annotated rich
temporal information. Our experiments compare and contrast several
probabilistic models differing in their feature space, linguistic assumptions
and data requirements. We evaluate performance against gold standard corpora
and also against human subjects
The Development of a Temporal Information Dictionary for Social Media Analytics
Dictionaries have been used to analyze text even before the emergence of social media and the use of dictionaries for sentiment analysis there. While dictionaries have been used to understand the tonality of text, so far it has not been possible to automatically detect if the tonality refers to the present, past, or future. In this research, we develop a dictionary containing time-indicating words in a wordlist (T-wordlist). To test how the dictionary performs, we apply our T-wordlist on different disaster related social media datasets. Subsequently we will validate the wordlist and results by a manual content analysis. So far, in this research-in-progress, we were able to develop a first dictionary and will also provide some initial insight into the performance of our wordlist
