    SAMuS : service-oriented architecture for multisensor surveillance in smart homes

    The design of a service-oriented architecture for multisensor surveillance in smart homes is presented as an integrated solution enabling automatic deployment, dynamic selection, and composition of sensors. Sensors are implemented as Web-connected devices, with a uniform Web API. RESTdesc is used to describe the sensors and a novel solution is presented to automatically compose Web APIs that can be applied with existing Semantic Web reasoners. We evaluated the solution by building a smart Kinect sensor that is able to dynamically switch between IR and RGB and optimizing person detection by incorporating feedback from pressure sensors, as such demonstrating the collaboration among sensors to enhance detection of complex events. The performance results show that the platform scales for many Web APIs as composition time remains limited to a few hundred milliseconds in almost all cases

The text begins by briefly describing those who would most benefit from healthcare supervision. The book then summarizes possible scenarios for monitoring an older patient at home, deriving the common functional requirements for monitoring technology. Next, the work identifies the state of the art of technological monitoring approaches that are practically applicable to geriatric patients. A survey is presented on a range of such interdisciplinary fields as smart homes, telemonitoring, ambient intelligence, ambient assisted living, gerontechnology, and aging-in-place technology. The book discusses relevant experimental studies, highlighting the application of sensor fusion, signal processing and machine learning techniques. Finally, the text discusses future challenges, offering a number of suggestions for further research directions

    Major requirements for building Smart Homes in Smart Cities based on Internet of Things technologies

    The recent boom in the Internet of Things (IoT) will turn Smart Cities and Smart Homes (SH) from hype to reality. SH is the major building block for Smart Cities and have long been a dream for decades, hobbyists in the late 1970s made Home Automation (HA) possible when personal computers started invading home spaces. While SH can share most of the IoT technologies, there are unique characteristics that make SH special. From the result of a recent research survey on SH and IoT technologies, this paper defines the major requirements for building SH. Seven unique requirement recommendations are defined and classified according to the specific quality of the SH building blocks

    Big Data and the Internet of Things

    Advances in sensing and computing capabilities are making it possible to embed increasing computing power in small devices. This has enabled the sensing devices not just to passively capture data at very high resolution but also to take sophisticated actions in response. Combined with advances in communication, this is resulting in an ecosystem of highly interconnected devices referred to as the Internet of Things - IoT. In conjunction, the advances in machine learning have allowed building models on this ever increasing amounts of data. Consequently, devices all the way from heavy assets such as aircraft engines to wearables such as health monitors can all now not only generate massive amounts of data but can draw back on aggregate analytics to "improve" their performance over time. Big data analytics has been identified as a key enabler for the IoT. In this chapter, we discuss various avenues of the IoT where big data analytics either is already making a significant impact or is on the cusp of doing so.     Dynamic Resource Discovery and Management for Edge Computing Based on SPF for HADR Operations

    The Smart City concept tries to inherit the advantages of Internet-of-Things (IoT) into its realm to function alongside the existing legacy systems. One of the most promising aspects of IoT is Edge Computing, which tries to move the computing, traditionally done via a centralized infrastructure like the cloud to the edge of the network. This allows remote deployment of IoT assets closer to the source and application area of information enabling faster response times of action. Smart Cities of future envision using Edge Computing to their advantage for remote and distributed computing. Sieve, Process and Forward (SPF) is an Edge Computing solution for dynamic IoT applications for Smart City scenarios. The military is looking forward to use, as well as develop the SPF platform for its Edge Computing requirements. But currently, the SPF platform does not have the mechanism for remote discovery of edge resources and their management to leverage its potential completely. This paper tries to propose a resource discovery and management architecture and methodology for SPF to support future Human Assistance and Disaster Recovery (HADR) operations in Smart City environments with the vision of enabling interoperability between civilian and military platforms
