    A treatise on Web 2.0 with a case study from the financial markets

    There has been much hype in vocational and academic circles surrounding the emergence of web 2.0 or social media; however, relatively little work was dedicated to substantiating the actual concept of web 2.0. Many have dismissed it as not deserving of this new title, since the term web 2.0 assumes a certain interpretation of web history, including enough progress in certain direction to trigger a succession [i.e. web 1.0 → web 2.0]. Others provided arguments in support of this development, and there has been a considerable amount of enthusiasm in the literature. Much research has been busy evaluating current use of web 2.0, and analysis of the user generated content, but an objective and thorough assessment of what web 2.0 really stands for has been to a large extent overlooked. More recently the idea of collective intelligence facilitated via web 2.0, and its potential applications have raised interest with researchers, yet a more unified approach and work in the area of collective intelligence is needed. This thesis identifies and critically evaluates a wider context for the web 2.0 environment, and what caused it to emerge; providing a rich literature review on the topic, a review of existing taxonomies, a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the concept itself, an investigation of the collective intelligence potential that emerges from application usage. Finally, a framework for harnessing collective intelligence in a more systematic manner is proposed. In addition to the presented results, novel methodologies are also introduced throughout this work. In order to provide interesting insight but also to illustrate analysis, a case study of the recent financial crisis is considered. Some interesting results relating to the crisis are revealed within user generated content data, and relevant issues are discussed where appropriate

    Invalidation-based protocols for replicated datastores

    Distributed in-memory datastores underpin cloud applications that run within a datacenter and demand high performance, strong consistency, and availability. A key feature of datastores is data replication. The data are replicated across servers because a single server often cannot handle the request load. Replication is also necessary to guarantee that a server or link failure does not render a portion of the dataset inaccessible. A replication protocol is responsible for ensuring strong consistency between the replicas of a datastore, even when faults occur, by determining the actions necessary to access and manipulate the data. Consequently, a replication protocol also drives the datastore's performance. Existing strongly consistent replication protocols deliver fault tolerance but fall short in terms of performance. Meanwhile, the opposite occurs in the world of multiprocessors, where data are replicated across the private caches of different cores. The multiprocessor regime uses invalidations to afford strongly consistent replication with high performance but neglects fault tolerance. Although handling failures in the datacenter is critical for data availability, we observe that the common operation is fault-free and far exceeds the operation during faults. In other words, the common operating environment inside a datacenter closely resembles that of a multiprocessor. Based on this insight, we draw inspiration from the multiprocessor for high-performance, strongly consistent replication in the datacenter. The primary contribution of this thesis is in adapting invalidating protocols to the nuances of replicated datastores, which include skewed data accesses, fault tolerance, and distributed transactions

    Paracolonialism: a case of post-1988 Anglophone Pakistani fiction

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyEmbedded in the socio-political milieu of the country Anglophone Pakistani fiction provides a critical perspective on some of the important contemporary issues facing the country like feminism, class struggle, misuse of religious discourse, sectarianism, terrorism and the fragmentation of the Pakistani society. By contextualizing the works of four Pakistani fiction writers, Sara Suleri, Kamila Shamsie, Mohsin Hamid and Mohammed Hanif, in the theoretical paradigms of modernism, postmodernism and postcolonialism, this research identifies salient facets and characteristics of Pakistani Anglophone fiction produced during the last three decades. This thesis argues that Pakistani Anglophone fiction is Janus-faced in nature. On the one hand it specifically deconstructs various indigenous issues which are destabilizing Pakistani society and politics, while on the other hand it challenges the discursive construction of Pakistan as a terrorist country through international discourse. By doing so, these writers not only adopt the role of political commentators and interveners but also create a counter-narrative to Western hegemonic discourse and represent a case for a liberal and democratic Pakistan. Moreover the textual analysis of this fiction indicates a shift from traditional postcolonial literature. Instead of contextualizing their work in the colonial experience of the British Raj or its aftermath, these writers dissociate themselves from it and use this dissociation as a narrative strategy to hold the political and military leadership accountable for the socio-political chaos in Pakistan. The thesis argues that this characteristic of Anglophone Pakistani fiction indicates the emergence of a new phase, ‘Paracolonialism’ or ‘Paracolonial fiction’ which rejects the influence of colonialism on the socio-economic and political crisis of Third World countries and deconstructs various factors which led to their post-independence unstable economy and social fragmentation

    Acceleration of the hardware-software interface of a communication device for parallel systems

    During the last decades the ever growing need for computational power fostered the development of parallel computer architectures. Applications need to be parallelized and optimized to be able to exploit modern system architectures. Today, scalability of applications is more and more limited both by development resources, as programming of complex parallel applications becomes increasingly demanding, and by the fundamental scalability issues introduced by the cost of communication in distributed memory systems. Lowering the latency of communication is mandatory to increase scalability and serves as an enabling technology for programming of distributed memory systems at a higher abstraction layer using higher degrees of compiler driven automation. At the same time it can increase performance of such systems in general. In this work, the software/hardware interface and the network interface controller functions of the EXTOLL network architecture, which is specifically designed to satisfy the needs of low-latency networking for high-performance computing, is presented. Several new architectural contributions are made in this thesis, namely a new efficient method for virtual-tophysical address-translation named ATU and a novel method to issue operations to a virtual device in an optimal way which has been termed Transactional I/O. This new method needs changes in the architecture of the host CPU the device is connected to. Two additional methods that emulate most of the characteristics of Transactional I/O are developed and employed in the development of the EXTOLL hardware to facilitate usage together with contemporary CPUs. These new methods heavily leverage properties of the HyperTransport interface used to connect the device to the CPU. Finally, this thesis also introduces an optimized remote-memory-access architecture for efficient split-phase transactions and atomic operations. The complete architecture has been prototyped using FPGA technology enabling a more precise analysis and verification than is possible using simulation alone. The resulting design utilizes 95 % of a 90 nm FPGA device and reaches speeds of 200 MHz and 156 MHz in the different clock domains of the design. The EXTOLL software stack is developed and a performance evaluation of the software using the EXTOLL hardware is performed. The performance evaluation shows an excellent start-up latency value of 1.3 μs, which competes with the most advanced networks available, in spite of the technological performance handicap encountered by FPGA technology. The resulting network is, to the best of the knowledge of the author, the fastest FPGA-based interconnection network for commodity processors ever built
