    The emergence of American English as a discursive variety

    Do speakers’ identity constructions influence the emergence of new varieties of a language? This question is at the heart of a debate about how the process of the emergence of postcolonial varieties of English can best be modeled. This volume contributes to the debate by linking it to models and theories proposed by anthropological linguists, sociolinguists and discourse linguists who view identity as a social and cultural phenomenon that is produced through linguistic and other social practices. Language is seen as essential for identity constructions because speakers use linguistic forms that index social ‘personae’ as well as specific social practices and values to convey an image of self to other speakers. Based on the theory of enregisterment that models the cultural and discursive process of the creation of indexical links between linguistic forms and social values, the argument is made that any model of the emergence of new varieties needs to differentiate carefully between a structural level and a discursive level. What emerges on the discursive level as a result of processes of enregisterment is a ‘discursive variety’. The volume illustrates how the emergence of a discursive variety can be systematically studied in a historical context by focusing on the enregisterment of American English as it can be observed in nineteenth-century U.S. newspapers. Using a discourse-linguistic methodological framework and two large databases containing close to 78 million newspaper articles, the study reveals a complex pattern of indexical links between the phonological forms /h/-dropping and -insertion, yod-dropping, a lengthened and backened bath vowel, non-rhoticity, a realization of prevocalic /r/ as a labiodental approximant as well as the lexical items baggage and pants on the one hand and social values centering around nationality, authenticity and non-specificity on the other hand. Qualitative analyses uncover the social personae associated with the linguistic forms (e.g. the American cowboy, the African American mammy and the ‘Anglo-maniac’ American dude), while quantitative analyses trace the development over time and show that the enregisterment processes were widespread and not restricted to a particular region

    Standardising Cornish : the politics of a new minority language

    The last recorded native speaker of the Cornish language died in 1777. Since the nineteenth century, amateur scholars have made separate attempts to reconstruct its written remains, each creating a different orthography. Later, following recognition under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in 2002, Cornish gained new status. However, with government support came the governmental framework of “New Public Management”, which emphasises quantifiable outcomes to measure performance. This built implicit pressure towards finding a single standard orthography, for greatest efficiency. There followed a six-year debate among supporters of the different orthographies, usually quite heated, about which should prevail. This debate exemplified the importance of standardisation for minority languages, but its ultimate conclusion saw all sides giving way, and expediency, not ideology, prevailing. It also showed that standardisation was not imposed explicitly within language policy, but emerged during the language planning process

    Embracing english as a lingua franca : learning from portuguese users of english in higher education

    Tese de doutoramento, LinguĂ­stica (LinguĂ­stica Aplicada), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, 2016The last sixty years have witnessed a vast spread of English language teaching (ELT), which has led to a historically unique position of English in the world, where native speakers of English are now outnumbered by non-native users of the language. As a result, a greater need for the lingua franca function of English is needed but, although English as Lingua Franca (ELF) is emerging as a legitimate alternative to Standard English or native speaker-based models in ELT, the truth is that the primacy of the latter is still upheld in most classrooms around the world. With this in mind, this thesis begins by examining the reasons for learning English and presents an outline of how English has come to be a global language. Due to the increasing use of English for intercultural communication, this study reviews the major developments in research into ELF and then outlines the position of ELF in the European Union, and surveys ELT practices in this specific setting. This thesis then examines the presence of English in the national context of Portugal and focuses on students of English at the School of Technology and Management (ESTG/IPL), in Leiria. The methods used in this study combine the analysis of questionnaires and answers to a placement test that incoming students are required to take. Despite having successfully undergone at least seven years of prior English learning, it has been observed that the majority of these undergraduates struggle with the demands of this language in its standard form. However, this study suggests they may be capable of communicating effectively in English if teaching approaches are adjusted to accommodate their communicative competence. The problem is that the focus on English Language teaching at ESTG/IPL is largely based on a student's ability to speak and write English as a native speaker does. Therefore, this study proposes a significant shift in ELT pedagogy and suggests a number of strategies meant to enhance the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of students enrolled in the English course at this institution. Ultimately, the analysis here provided is an attempt to demonstrate that the ELT policy in Portugal is in need of serious re-evaluation, and hopefully it may be taken into account so as to guide educators and language policies towards ELF-informed teaching in Portuguese classrooms

    Linguistic and metalinguistic categories in second language learning

    This paper discusses proposed characteristics of implicit linguistic and explicit metalinguistic knowledge representations as well as the properties of implicit and explicit processes believed to operate on these representations. In accordance with assumptions made in the usage-based approach to language and language acquisition, it is assumed that implicit linguistic knowledge is represented in terms of flexible and context-dependent categories which are subject to similarity-based processing. It is suggested that, by contrast, explicit metalinguistic knowledge is characterized by stable and discrete Aristotelian categories which subserve conscious, rule-based processing. The consequences of these differences in category structure and processing mechanisms for the usefulness or otherwise of metalinguistic knowledge in second language learning and performance are explored. Reference is made to existing empirical and theoretical research about the role of metalinguistic knowledge in second language acquisition, and specific empirical predictions arising out of the line of argument adopted in the current paper are put forward.     Separation of Vocal and Non-Vocal Components from Audio Clip Using Correlated Repeated Mask (CRM)

    Extraction of singing voice from music is one of the ongoing research topics in the field of speech recognition and audio analysis. In particular, this topic finds many applications in the music field, such as in determining music structure, lyrics recognition, and singer recognition. Although many studies have been conducted for the separation of voice from the background, there has been less study on singing voice in particular. In this study, efforts were made to design a new methodology to improve the separation of vocal and non-vocal components in audio clips using REPET [14]. In the newly designed method, we tried to rectify the issues encountered in the REPET method, while designing an improved repeating mask which is used to extract the non-vocal component in audio. The main reason why the REPET method was preferred over previous methods for this study is its independent nature. More specifically, the majority of existing methods for the separation of singing voice from music were constructed explicitly based on one or more assumptions

    An aesthetics of touch: investigating the language of design relating to form

    How well can designers communicate qualities of touch? This paper presents evidence that they have some capability to do so, much of which appears to have been learned, but at present make limited use of such language. Interviews with graduate designer-makers suggest that they are aware of and value the importance of touch and materiality in their work, but lack a vocabulary to fully relate to their detailed explanations of other aspects such as their intent or selection of materials. We believe that more attention should be paid to the verbal dialogue that happens in the design process, particularly as other researchers show that even making-based learning also has a strong verbal element to it. However, verbal language alone does not appear to be adequate for a comprehensive language of touch. Graduate designers-makers’ descriptive practices combined non-verbal manipulation within verbal accounts. We thus argue that haptic vocabularies do not simply describe material qualities, but rather are situated competences that physically demonstrate the presence of haptic qualities. Such competencies are more important than groups of verbal vocabularies in isolation. Design support for developing and extending haptic competences must take this wide range of considerations into account to comprehensively improve designers’ capabilities
