3DTouch: A wearable 3D input device with an optical sensor and a 9-DOF inertial measurement unit
We present 3DTouch, a novel 3D wearable input device worn on the fingertip
for 3D manipulation tasks. 3DTouch is designed to fill the missing gap of a 3D
input device that is self-contained, mobile, and universally working across
various 3D platforms. This paper presents a low-cost solution to designing and
implementing such a device. Our approach relies on relative positioning
technique using an optical laser sensor and a 9-DOF inertial measurement unit.
3DTouch is self-contained, and designed to universally work on various 3D
platforms. The device employs touch input for the benefits of passive haptic
feedback, and movement stability. On the other hand, with touch interaction,
3DTouch is conceptually less fatiguing to use over many hours than 3D spatial
input devices. We propose a set of 3D interaction techniques including
selection, translation, and rotation using 3DTouch. An evaluation also
demonstrates the device's tracking accuracy of 1.10 mm and 2.33 degrees for
subtle touch interaction in 3D space. Modular solutions like 3DTouch opens up a

Motion Detecting Method And Device
In some embodiments, a motion detecting device is configured to detect whether one or more movement events have occurred. The motion detecting device can include: (a) a processing module configured to run on a computational unit; and (b) a sensing device having: (1) one or more pressure sensors configured to provide two or more pressure measurements; and (2) a transmitter electrically coupled to the one or more pressure sensors and configured to transmit the two or more pressure measurements to the computational unit. The processing module is configured to use the two or more pressure measurements to determine whether the one or more movement events have occurred. The sensing device can be configured to be placed in at least one of ductwork of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system or an air handler of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. Technologies and solutions for location-based services in smart cities: past, present, and future
Location-based services (LBS) in smart cities have drastically altered the way cities operate, giving a new dimension to the life of citizens. LBS rely on location of a device, where proximity estimation remains at its core. The applications of LBS range from social networking and marketing to vehicle-toeverything communications. In many of these applications, there is an increasing need and trend to learn the physical distance between nearby devices. This paper elaborates upon the current needs of proximity estimation in LBS and compares them against the available Localization and Proximity (LP) finding technologies (LP technologies in short). These technologies are compared for their accuracies and performance based on various different parameters, including latency, energy consumption, security, complexity, and throughput. Hereafter, a classification of these technologies, based on various different smart city applications, is presented. Finally, we discuss some emerging LP technologies that enable proximity estimation in LBS and present some future research areas

Much of biology (and, indeed, all of science) is becoming increasingly
computational. We tend to think of this in regards to algorithmic approaches
and software tools, as well as increased computing power. There has also been a
shift towards slicker, packaged solutions--which mirrors everyday life, from
smart phones to smart homes. As a result, it's all too easy to be detached from
the fundamental elements that power these changes, and to see solutions as
"black boxes". The major goal of this piece is to use the example of the
Raspberry Pi--a small, general-purpose computer--as the central component in a
highly developed ecosystem that brings together elements like external
hardware, sensors and controllers, state-of-the-art programming practices, and

Android Based Behavioral Biometric Authentication via Multi-Modal Fusion
Because mobile devices are easily lost or stolen, continuous authentication is extremely desirable for them. Behavioral biometrics provides non-intrusive continuous authentication that has much less impact on usability than active authentication. However single-modality behavioral biometrics has proven less accurate than standard active authentication. This thesis presents a behavioral biometric system that uses multi-modal fusion with user data from touch, keyboard, and orientation sensors. Testing of ve users shows that fusion of modalities provides more accurate authentication than each individual modalities by itself. Using the BayesNet classification algorithm, fusion achieves False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR) values of 9.65% and 2% respectively, each of which is 8% lower than the closest individual modality
Balancing the power of multimedia information retrieval and usability in designing interactive TV
Steady progress in the field of multimedia information retrieval (MMIR) promises a useful set of tools that could provide new usage scenarios and features to enhance the user experience in today s digital media applications. In the interactive TV domain, the simplicity of interaction is more crucial than in any other digital media domain and ultimately determines the success or otherwise of any new applications. Thus when integrating emerging tools like MMIR into interactive TV, the increase in interface complexity and sophistication resulting from these features can easily reduce its actual usability. In this paper we describe a design strategy we developed as a result of our e®ort in balancing the power of emerging multimedia information retrieval techniques and maintaining the simplicity of the interface in interactive TV. By providing multiple levels of interface sophistication in increasing order as a viewer repeatedly presses the same button on their remote control, we provide a layered interface that can accommodate viewers requiring varying degrees of power and simplicity. An industrial sewing machine variable speed controller
The apparel industry is attempting to move in a new direction in the coming decade. Since the invention of an electrically powered sewing machine, the operator has been seated. Today, companies are switching from a sit down operation to a stand up operation involving modular stations. The old treadle worked well with the sitting operator, but problems have been found when trying to use the same treadle with a standing operator. This report details a new design for a treadle to operate an industrial sewing machine that has a standing operator. Emphasis is placed on the ease of use by the operator, as well as the ergonomics involved. Procedures for testing the design are included along with possible uses for the treadle in other applications besides an industrial sewing machine
