    Business opportunities in the Ethiopian fruit and vegetable sector

    The horticultural sector in Ethiopia is growing strongly. Major part of this growth is created by investments in the floriculture sector. Recently more and more in terest from the Dutch private sector is shown in the Ethiopian fruits and vegeta ble sector. Export of fruit and vegetables has been limited but is now growing strongly with new investors coming in. Both in Europe and in the Middle East there is a growing interest for products from Ethiopia. Presently, the main export products are fresh beans, strawberries, tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and fresh herbs. A potential new crop is table grapes. The Government of Ethiopia gives high pri ority to the development of the horticulture sector and in 2008 the Horticultural Development Agency has been established with a specific focus to promote and support the further development of the horticulture sector. It is concluded that the further development of the fruit and vegetable sector in Ethiopia for export to Europe and the Middle East has good perspectives and provides interesting opportunities for foreign investors. The sector is however still in its infant stage. Facilitating conditions for doing business are not yet op timal, but are expected to improve in the near future. For growers who consider starting operations in Ethiopia it is important to carefully select a location and ensure getting the logistical and cool chain well organised beforehand. For companies considering sourcing from Ethiopia it is important to build good relations with the potential growers, provide hands on guidance and train ing and invest in organising the logistical supply chain well

    This is the final report of Defra project OF0151 Despite a very strong consumer demand for organic fruit, it is the least developed sector of the UK organic industry. The main constraint to growth in supply is the lack of organic fruit growers, especially those on a large enough scale to supply the wholesale, multiple and processing markets. The UK Organic Fruit Focus Group was set up in 1997 as a producer initiative to develop the market and production of UK organic fruit. At the first meeting of the group it was concluded that a) the absence of written technical information on how to grow organic fruit b) the lack of experienced advisors c) the lack of fruit and d) a lack of information on the economics of organic fruit were major barriers to grower confidence and hence expanding production. In June 1998 HDRA began a one year study into the Economics of Organic Fruit Production. The study aims to provide information on: • the size of the organic fruit market and potential for future growth • returns and costs of growing organic top and soft fruit Information for this study has been obtained through contact and visits to marketing organisations, fruit processors and growers. For information on the market major buyers of organic fruit have been contacted to ascertain quantities bought and market trends. In consultation with the ADAS Fruit Team and the Welsh Institute of Rural Studies, data collection forms were devised to enable full costing techniques (all costs allocated to different cost centres) to arrive at net margins and costs of producing organic fruit per hectare (acre), and per kg (lb). In determining the financial returns, average yields over a number of years (5-10) have been used rather than those related to a specific year and where necessary costs were related to those yields. Presently there are a very small number of specialised organic fruit growers, therefore the sample was small: dessert apples (5), culinary apples (3) pear growers (3), strawberry growers (5). It was not possible to find any commercial data from growers of other organic fruit. Case study data from these growers of apples, pears and strawberries were used to provide ‘best possible estimates’ for the physical and financial performance of these organic fruit enterprises. The general conclusions are that despite low (lower than conventional) and sometimes variable yields most organic fruit growers are currently able to generate economic returns. Profitability is related to current high prices (premiums of 60 100% over conventional) for fruit and ability to sell the whole crop to various outlets. Although individual costs differ the overall costs of production are similar between conventional and organic fruit. The profitability of organic fruit appears to be similar or greater than average conventional production. Break even budgets indicate that even if prices fell by approximately 20% then organic fruit production could still be profitable. Price premiums of approximately 40% are still required to enable organic fruit production to be profitable at current yields. Current price premiums offer potential economically profitable returns; however, conventional growers are reluctant to convert. To give growers confidence to take up the challenge of organic fruit production they need encouragement from government and industry in terms of continued aid to assist conversion, more money for research to improve the quantity and quality of economic data available, to improve production techniques, and finally, money to disseminate this information to growers. This report suggests that continued economic monitoring of converting and existing organic fruit farms should be undertaken. Fruit buyers should also encourage UK growers by offering them market incentives. Unless the UK organic fruit growers receive this encouragement, the majority of organic fruit may continue to be imported

    Adaptation options for agricultural cultivation systems in the South Central Coast under the context of climate change: Assessment Report.

    This report highlights the results of consultation meetings and field visits organized by the Department of Crop Production and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security in Southeast Asia in association with the three offices of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the South Central Coast provinces of Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, and Khanh Hoa, in combination with consultation with the provinces in the conference: “Summing up crops production in the Winter-Spring season in 2018-2019, implementing the Summer-Autumn season, Main rice season in 2019 for the South Central Coast and the Central Highlands” held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Tam Ky City, Quang Nam Province on 12 April 2019. The meetings underlined the progress made by the provinces on climate change adaptation and mitigation, options for risk reductions in agricultural production, and conversion of crop structure as results of implementing the guidelines of the provinces and the Sector, especially, solutions for reservation and efficient and economic use of water under the context of climate change. This assessment report also reviews some issues related to the agricultural transformation of the region in adapting to risks caused by climate change. They are based on comparative advantages in terms of geographical location and market of key agricultural products. This report also points out shortcomings in using land and unreasonable points in managing and using important natural resources, especially water, and provides recommendations for the agricultural transformation and inter-regional connection with the Central Highlands and the Southeast. The team also introduces climate-related risks maps and adaptation plans (CS MAP) which is applied in the five provinces in the Mekong Delta Region, and hopes this solution’s expansion shall be supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the provinces

    The Division Biobased Products of the WUR institute A&F was approached by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality with a policy support question about the potential of Bio-based economic developments in Malaysia. Malaysia is one of the major international trade partners of the Netherlands. Annually 4.500 – 5.000 million euro’s worth of goods are imported from Malaysia. The Netherlands are Malaysia’s most important trading partner within the EU. The volume of agricultural commodities and especially palm oil products are substantial and the use of biobased resources for the generation of energy or biofuel has created a fierce debate on the sustainability of expansion of use of the biomass resources. In the context of the international policy to support the transition towards a biobased economy the potential resources that can be used for production of materials, chemicals and energy needs to be indentified. This report is reviewing the options that the current Malaysian agro-forestry sector may provide for sustainable developments. The main conclusions are that especially the currently underutilized residues and polluting wastes from the palm oil production have big potential for value addition and technical product development that also could substantially contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Examples can be found in fermentation of residues and effluents to produce bio-gas / ethanol or bioplastics but also fibre boards and building materials. Demonstration on pilot scale of such technologies could create new business and bilateral interactions between Malaysia and The Netherlands

FruitGrowth will address the main barriers identified by the ‘Working Group report, 2009’, by focussing on robust cultivars in apples, new innovative weeding methods and extending the fruit season & thereby product availability for consumers we will introduce new cultivars & technologies in storage. We work on short & long time solutions of the key pests & diseases (codling moth, apple sawfly & apple scab in apples), natural beneficial’s in flower strips, & natural compound to control key pest. FruitGrowth includes research, development, demonstration & dissemination of the results to fruit growers. Outcomes are expected to contribute to a market-driven growth of unique, high value fresh organic apples from local sustainable & profitable production systems, through increasing grower, industry and consumer confidence in Danish grown organic apples

    The Rise and Fall of Tri Valley Growers Cooperative

    This paper examines the market and organizational factors that led to the bankruptcy in July 2000 of Tri Valley Growers (TVG), a California tomato- and fruit-processing cooperative owned by more than 500 growers. TVG’s bankruptcy was caused by a confluence of organizational and market-related factors including a low productivity of assets due to high inventory levels and obsolete facilities, high operating costs relative to competition, high raw product transport costs due to the geographic mismatch of production and processing capacity, particularly in tomato operations, and a poor information system.
