    Single-layer economic model predictive control for periodic operation

    In this paper we consider periodic optimal operation of constrained periodic linear systems. We propose an economic model predictive controller based on a single layer that unites dynamic real time optimization and control. The proposed controller guarantees closed-loop convergence to the optimal periodic trajectory that minimizes the average operation cost for a given economic criterion. A priori calculation of the optimal trajectory is not required and if the economic cost function is changed, recursive feasibility and convergence to the new periodic optimal trajectory is guaranteed. The results are demonstrated with two simulation examples, a four tank system, and a simplified model of a section of Barcelona's water distribution network.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

    The paper describes the application of Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodologies for application to electric and hybrid-electric vehicle drive-train formats incorporating multiple energy/power sources. Particular emphasis is given to the co-ordinated management of energy flow from the multiple sources to address issues of extended vehicle range and battery life-time for all-electric drive-trains, and emissions reduction and drive-train torsional oscillations, for hybrid-electric counterparts, whilst accommodating operational constraints and, ultimately, generic non-standard driving cycles

    On generalized terminal state constraints for model predictive control

    This manuscript contains technical results related to a particular approach for the design of Model Predictive Control (MPC) laws. The approach, named "generalized" terminal state constraint, induces the recursive feasibility of the underlying optimization problem and recursive satisfaction of state and input constraints, and it can be used for both tracking MPC (i.e. when the objective is to track a given steady state) and economic MPC (i.e. when the objective is to minimize a cost function which does not necessarily attains its minimum at a steady state). It is shown that the proposed technique provides, in general, a larger feasibility set with respect to existing approaches, given the same computational complexity. Moreover, a new receding horizon strategy is introduced, exploiting the generalized terminal state constraint. Under mild assumptions, the new strategy is guaranteed to converge in finite time, with arbitrarily good accuracy, to an MPC law with an optimally-chosen terminal state constraint, while still enjoying a larger feasibility set.     A Novel Formulation of Economic Model Predictive Control for Periodic Operations

    This paper proposes a novel formulation of economic model predictive control (MPC) for linear systems with periodic operations. In this economic MPC design, the optimal periodic trajectory from an economic point of view is unknown, hence it is not possible to follow a standard control strategy in which the MPC uses this trajectory to define a terminal constraint to guarantee closed-loop convergence. The economic cost function is optimized with a periodicity constraint at each time step considering all periodic trajectories in a period including the current state. The recursive feasibility and closed-loop convergence to the optimal periodic trajectory are analyzed using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions.     Water quality monitoring, control and management (WQMCM) framework using collaborative wireless sensor networks

    Improving water quality is of global concern, with agricultural practices being the major contributors to reduced water quality. The reuse of nutrient-rich drainage water can be a valuable strategy to gain economic-environmental benefits. However, currently the tools and techniques to allow this do not exist. Therefore, we have proposed a framework, WQMCM, which utilises increasingly common local farm-scale networks across a catchment, adding provision for collaborative information sharing. Using this framework, individual sub-networks can learn their environment and predict the impact of catchment events on their locality, allowing dynamic decision making for local irrigation strategies. Since resource constraints of network nodes (e.g. power consumption, computing power etc.) require a simplified predictive model for discharges, therefore low-dimensional model parameters are derived from the existing National Resource Conservation Method (NRCS), utilising real-time field values. Evaluation of the predictive models, developed using M5 decision trees, demonstrates accuracy of 84-94% compared with the traditional NRCS curve number model. The discharge volume and response time model was tested to perform with 6% relative root mean square error (RRMSE), even for a small training set of around 100 samples; however the discharge response time model required a minimum of 300 training samples to show reasonable performance with 16% RRMS
