Intelligent customer relationship management (ICRM) by EFLOW portal
Customer relationship management (CRM) has become a strategic initiative aimed at getting, growing, and retaining the right customers. A great amount of numeric data and even more soft information are available about customers. The strategy of building and maintaining customer relations can be described with 'if⊠then' rules acquired from experts. Doctus Knowledge-Based System provides a new and simplified approach in the field of knowledge management. It is able to cope with tacit and implicit rules at the same time, so decision makers can clearly see the satisfactory solution (then and there). It reasons both deductive and inductive, so it enables the user to check on the model graph why is the chosen solution in the given situation most appropriate. It is upgradeable with in telligent portal, which presents the personalized (body-tailored) information for decision makers. When we need some hard data from a database or a data warehouse, we have automatic connection between case input interface and the database. Doctus recognizes the relations between the data, it selects them and provides only the needed rules to the decision maker. Intelligent portal puts our experience on the web, so our knowledge base is constantly improving with new 'if⊠then' rules. We support decision mak ing with two interfaces. On the Developer Interface the attributes, the values and the 'if⊠then' rules can be modified. The intelligent portal is used as a managerial decision support tool. This interface can be used without seeing the knowledge base, we only see the personalized soft information. ICRM (intelligent Customer Relationship Management) helps customer to get the requested information quickly. It is also capable of customizing the questionnaires, so the customer doesn't have to answer irrelevant questions and the decision maker doesn't have to read endless reports
A framework for utility data integration in the UK
In this paper we investigate various factors which prevent utility knowledge from being
fully exploited and suggest that integration techniques can be applied to improve the
quality of utility records. The paper suggests a framework which supports knowledge
and data integration. The framework supports utility integration at two levels: the
schema and data level. Schema level integration ensures that a single, integrated geospatial
data set is available for utility enquiries. Data level integration improves utility data
quality by reducing inconsistency, duplication and conflicts. Moreover, the framework
is designed to preserve autonomy and distribution of utility data. The ultimate aim of
the research is to produce an integrated representation of underground utility infrastructure
in order to gain more accurate knowledge of the buried services. It is hoped that
this approach will enable us to understand various problems associated with utility data,
and to suggest some potential techniques for resolving them

A Data Transformation System for Biological Data Sources
Scientific data of importance to biologists in the Human Genome Project resides not only in conventional databases, but in structured files maintained in a number of different formats (e.g. ASN.1 and ACE) as well a.s sequence analysis packages (e.g. BLAST and FASTA). These formats and packages contain a number of data types not found in conventional databases, such as lists and variants, and may be deeply nested. We present in this paper techniques for querying and transforming such data, and illustrate their use in a prototype system developed in conjunction with the Human Genome Center for Chromosome 22. We also describe optimizations performed by the system, a crucial issue for bulk data
"Mental Rotation" by Optimizing Transforming Distance
The human visual system is able to recognize objects despite transformations
that can drastically alter their appearance. To this end, much effort has been
devoted to the invariance properties of recognition systems. Invariance can be
engineered (e.g. convolutional nets), or learned from data explicitly (e.g.
temporal coherence) or implicitly (e.g. by data augmentation). One idea that
has not, to date, been explored is the integration of latent variables which
permit a search over a learned space of transformations. Motivated by evidence
that people mentally simulate transformations in space while comparing
examples, so-called "mental rotation", we propose a transforming distance.
Here, a trained relational model actively transforms pairs of examples so that
they are maximally similar in some feature space yet respect the learned
transformational constraints. We apply our method to nearest-neighbour problems
on the Toronto Face Database and NORB
Towards personalization in digital libraries through ontologies
In this paper we describe a browsing and searching personalization system for digital libraries based on the use of ontologies for describing the relationships between all the
elements which take part in a digital library scenario of use. The main goal of this project is to help the users of a digital library to improve their experience of use by means of two complementary strategies: first, by maintaining a complete history record of his or her browsing and searching activities, which is part of a navigational user profile which includes preferences and all the aspects related to community involvement; and second, by reusing all the knowledge which has been extracted from previous usage from other users with similar profiles. This can be accomplished in terms of narrowing and focusing the search results and browsing options through the use of a recommendation system which organizes such results in the most appropriate manner, using ontologies and concepts drawn from the semantic web field. The complete integration of the experience of use of a digital library in the learning process is also pursued. Both the usage and information organization can be also exploited to extract useful knowledge from the way users interact with a digital library, knowledge that can be used to improve several design aspects of the library, ranging from internal organization aspects to human factors and user interfaces. Although this project is still on an early development stage, it is possible to identify all the desired functionalities and requirements that are necessary to fully integrate the use of a digital library in an e-learning environment
