    Handicapping currency design: counterfeit deterrence and visual accessibility in the United States and abroad

    Despite the increasing use of electronic payments, currency retains an important role in the payments system of every country. Two aspects of currency usage drive currency design worldwide: deterring counterfeiting and making paper currency accessible to the visually impaired. Further, among the world's currencies, only U.S. banknotes are widely owned and used in transactions outside their country of issue (although the euro also has some external circulation). In this article, we compare and contrast major currencies and their design features. We conclude that the designs of the two most widely used currencies in the world-the U.S. dollar and the euro-have successfully deterred counterfeiting; data on other currencies are not public. We also conclude that, among the world's major currencies, U.S. banknotes have the fewest features to assist the visually impaired.Paper money design ; Coinage ; Counterfeits and counterfeiting

    Developing Blockchain-enabled Marketplace Interfaces: A Design Science Research Study

    Digital transformation\u27s scope evolves from being limited to the organizational level to inter-organizational collaboration in supply chain networks and business ecosystems. Blockchain-enabled marketplaces have the potential to transform business networks by eliminating intermediaries. To investigate the interface design and visualization of blockchain-enabled marketplaces, we employed a design science methodology and synthesized knowledge from literature, practice, and qualitative expert interviews. Our research provides (1) theoretically grounded and prescriptive knowledge expressed in meta-requirements and design principles inspired by effective use theory, and (2) presents concrete design features and an expository prototype instantiation. The prototype is evaluated through focus group workshops and interviews with experts and potential users. Our work contributes to recent calls to investigate the design and visualization of blockchain-enabled marketplaces, advances research on blockchain applications in B2B contexts, and expands the literature on information system design for marketplace-oriented transformations

In this article, the authors compare and contrast trade-offs among currency design features, including those primarily intended to deter counterfeiting and those to improve usability by the visually impaired. The authors conclude that periodic changes in the design of currency are an important aspect of counterfeit deterrence and that currency designers worldwide generally have been successful in efforts to deter counterfeiting. At the same time, currency designers have sought to be sensitive to the needs of the visually impaired. Although trade-offs among goals sometimes have forced compromises, new technologies promise banknotes that are both more difficult to counterfeit and more accessible to the visually impaired.     Local energy markets - an IT-architecture design

    In recent years, local energy markets have become an important concept in more decentralized energy systems. Implementations in pilot projects provide first insights into different hypotheses and approaches. From a technical perspective, the requirements for the IT infrastructure of a local energy market are diverse, and a holistic view of its architecture is therefore necessary. This article presents an IT-architecture, which enables all basic local energy market functionalities, processes and modules based on the available literature. The proposed IT-architecture can serve as a blueprint for future local market projects as it covers the basic processes and is at the same time extendable. Furthermore, we give a detailed description of a real-world implementation of a local energy market using the described IT-architecture and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the utilized technologies along with this case study

    Audio-Video Detection and Fusion of Broad Casting Information

    In the last few decade of multimedia information systems, audio-video data has become an glowing part in many digital computer applications. Audio-video classification has been becoming a focus in the research of audio-video processing and pattern recognition. Automatic audio-video classification is very useful to audio-video indexing, content-based audio-video retrieval and on-line audio-video distribution such as online audio-video shopping, but it is a challenge to extract the most similar and salient themes from huge data of audio-video. In this paper, we propose effective algorithms to automatically segmentation and classify audio-video clips into one of  Six classes: advertisement, cartoon, songs, serial,  movie and news. For these categories a number of acoustic and visual features that include Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients, Color Histogram are extracted to characterize the audio and video data. The autoassociative neural network model (AANN) is used to capture the distribution of the acoustic and visual feature vectors. The AANN model captures the distribution of the acoustic and visual features of a class, and the back propagation learning algorithm is used to adjust the weights of the network to minimize the mean square error for each feature vector.
