    Privacy, Space and Time: a Survey on Privacy-Preserving Continuous Data Publishing

    Sensors, portable devices, and location-based services, generate massive amounts of geo-tagged, and/or location- and user-related data on a daily basis. The manipulation of such data is useful in numerous application domains, e.g., healthcare, intelligent buildings, and traffic monitoring, to name a few. A high percentage of these data carry information of users\u27 activities and other personal details, and thus their manipulation and sharing arise concerns about the privacy of the individuals involved. To enable the secure‚Äüfrom the users\u27 privacy perspective‚Äüdata sharing, researchers have already proposed various seminal techniques for the protection of users\u27 privacy. However, the continuous fashion in which data are generated nowadays, and the high availability of external sources of information, pose more threats and add extra challenges to the problem. In this survey, we visit the works done on data privacy for continuous data publishing, and report on the proposed solutions, with a special focus on solutions concerning location or geo-referenced data

    SoK: Differentially Private Publication of Trajectory Data

    Trajectory analysis holds many promises, from improvements in traffic management to routing advice or infrastructure development. However, learning users\u27 paths is extremely privacy-invasive. Therefore, there is a necessity to protect trajectories such that we preserve the global properties, useful for analysis, while specific and private information of individuals remains inaccessible. Trajectories, however, are difficult to protect, since they are sequential, highly dimensional, correlated, bound to geophysical restrictions, and easily mapped to semantic points of interest. This paper aims to establish a systematic framework on protective masking and synthetic-generation measures for trajectory databases with syntactic and differentially private (DP) guarantees, including also utility properties, derived from ideas and limitations of existing proposals. To reach this goal, we systematize the utility metrics used throughout the literature, deeply analyze the DP granularity notions, explore and elaborate on the state of the art on privacy-enhancing mechanisms and their problems, and expose the main limitations of DP notions in the context of trajectories

    DP-LTOD: Differential Privacy Latent Trajectory Community Discovering Services over Location-Based Social Networks

    IEEE Community detection for Location-based Social Networks (LBSNs) has been received great attention mainly in the field of large-scale Wireless Communication Networks. In this paper, we present a Differential Privacy Latent Trajectory cOmmunity Discovering (DP-LTOD) scheme, which obfuscates original trajectory sequences into differential privacy-guaranteed trajectory sequences for trajectory privacy-preserving, and discovers latent trajectory communities through clustering the uploaded trajectory sequences. Different with traditional trajectory privacy-preserving methods, we first partition original trajectory sequence into different segments. Then, the suitable locations and segments are selected to constitute obfuscated trajectory sequence. Specifically, we formulate the trajectory obfuscation problem to select an optimal trajectory sequence which has the smallest difference with original trajectory sequence. In order to prevent privacy leakage, we add Laplace noise and exponential noise to the outputs during the stages of location obfuscation matrix generation and trajectory sequence function generation, respectively. Through formal privacy analysis,we prove that DP-LTOD scheme can guarantee \epsilon-differential private. Moreover, we develop a trajectory clustering algorithm to classify the trajectories into different kinds of clusters according to semantic distance and geographical distance. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets illustrate that our DP-LTOD scheme can not only discover latent trajectory communities, but also protect user privacy from leaking

    Trajectory Data Collection with Local Differential Privacy

    Trajectory data collection is a common task with many applications in our daily lives. Analyzing trajectory data enables service providers to enhance their services, which ultimately benefits users. However, directly collecting trajectory data may give rise to privacy-related issues that cannot be ignored. Local differential privacy (LDP), as the de facto privacy protection standard in a decentralized setting, enables users to perturb their trajectories locally and provides a provable privacy guarantee. Existing approaches to private trajectory data collection in a local setting typically use relaxed versions of LDP, which cannot provide a strict privacy guarantee, or require some external knowledge that is impractical to obtain and update in a timely manner. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel trajectory perturbation mechanism that relies solely on an underlying location set and satisfies pure Ï”\epsilon-LDP to provide a stringent privacy guarantee. In the proposed mechanism, each point's adjacent direction information in the trajectory is used in its perturbation process. Such information serves as an effective clue to connect neighboring points and can be used to restrict the possible region of a perturbed point in order to enhance utility. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to use direction information for trajectory perturbation under LDP. Furthermore, based on this mechanism, we present an anchor-based method that adaptively restricts the region of each perturbed trajectory, thereby significantly boosting performance without violating the privacy constraint. Extensive experiments on both real-world and synthetic datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanisms.Comment: Accepted by VLDB 202

    Towards Mobility Data Science (Vision Paper)

    Mobility data captures the locations of moving objects such as humans, animals, and cars. With the availability of GPS-equipped mobile devices and other inexpensive location-tracking technologies, mobility data is collected ubiquitously. In recent years, the use of mobility data has demonstrated significant impact in various domains including traffic management, urban planning, and health sciences. In this paper, we present the emerging domain of mobility data science. Towards a unified approach to mobility data science, we envision a pipeline having the following components: mobility data collection, cleaning, analysis, management, and privacy.
