    Sensor function virtualization to support distributed intelligence in the internet of things

    It is estimated that-by 2020-billion devices will be connected to the Internet. This number not only includes TVs, PCs, tablets and smartphones, but also billions of embedded sensors that will make up the "Internet of Things" and enable a whole new range of intelligent services in domains such as manufacturing, health, smart homes, logistics, etc. To some extent, intelligence such as data processing or access control can be placed on the devices themselves. Alternatively, functionalities can be outsourced to the cloud. In reality, there is no single solution that fits all needs. Cooperation between devices, intermediate infrastructures (local networks, access networks, global networks) and/or cloud systems is needed in order to optimally support IoT communication and IoT applications. Through distributed intelligence the right communication and processing functionality will be available at the right place. The first part of this paper motivates the need for such distributed intelligence based on shortcomings in typical IoT systems. The second part focuses on the concept of sensor function virtualization, a potential enabler for distributed intelligence, and presents solutions on how to realize it

    This report focuses on a research-based project of the title ‘Optimization of Mobile Transport Network using Internet Protocol/Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) Approach’. Current protocols utilized in mobile transport network are approaching a saturation point in terms of capacity to cater for a massive consumer demand growth in the network. Persistence on the conventional approaches will require much more expenditure with less encouraging revenue. Thus, much work need to be pumped into a newer and more effective alternative namely IP/MPLS. An upgrade of support node gateways and a network transmission algorithm are key elements of the project. A performance assessment of the proposed algorithm based on the Quality of Service (QoS) is also very crucial. Validation of the algorithm via the “OPNET” modeler suite software simulation results analysis is also to be carried out to define the best gateway for mapping process. A robust and flexible IP/MPLS approach will consequently results in a better network performance thus providing more opportunities for a more dynamic network growth for the benefit of mankind. The resulting approach can be further improved via continuous research and development (R&D) to produce a more reliable and resilient protocol. IP/MPLS will surely provide the vital boost to usher in the next generation of networking

    Soft-Defined Heterogeneous Vehicular Network: Architecture and Challenges

    Heterogeneous Vehicular NETworks (HetVNETs) can meet various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for intelligent transport system (ITS) services by integrating different access networks coherently. However, the current network architecture for HetVNET cannot efficiently deal with the increasing demands of rapidly changing network landscape. Thanks to the centralization and flexibility of the cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN), soft-defined networking (SDN) can conveniently be applied to support the dynamic nature of future HetVNET functions and various applications while reducing the operating costs. In this paper, we first propose the multi-layer Cloud RAN architecture for implementing the new network, where the multi-domain resources can be exploited as needed for vehicle users. Then, the high-level design of soft-defined HetVNET is presented in detail. Finally, we briefly discuss key challenges and solutions for this new network, corroborating its feasibility in the emerging fifth-generation (5G) era

    An Autonomous System (AS) is a group of Internet Protocol-based networks with a single and clearly defined external routing policy, usually under single ownership, trust or administrative control. The AS represents a connected group of one or more blocks of IP addresses, called IP prefixes, that have been assigned to that organization and provides a single routing policy to systems outside the AS. The Internet is composed of the interconnection of several thousands of ASes, which use the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to exchange network prefixes (aggregations of IP addresses) reachability advertisements. BGP advertisements (or updates) are sent over BGP sessions administratively set between pairs of routers. BGP is a path vector routing protocol and is used to span different ASes. A path vector protocol defines a route as a pairing between a destination and the attributes of the path to that destination. Interior Border Gateway Protocol (iBGP) refers to the BGP neighbor relationship within the same AS. When BGP neighbor relationship are formed between two peers belonging to different AS are called Exterior Border Gateway Protocol (eBGP). In the last case, BGP routers are called Autonomous System Border Routers (ASBRs), while those running only iBGP sessions are referred to as Internal Routers (IRs). Traditional iBGP implementations require a full-mesh of sessions among routers of each AS
