    From Small-Gain Theory to Compositional Construction of Barrier Certificates for Large-Scale Stochastic Systems

    This paper is concerned with a compositional approach for the construction of control barrier certificates for large-scale interconnected stochastic systems while synthesizing hybrid controllers against high-level logic properties. Our proposed methodology involves decomposition of interconnected systems into smaller subsystems and leverages the notion of control sub-barrier certificates of subsystems, enabling one to construct control barrier certificates of interconnected systems by employing some max⁥\max-type small-gain conditions. The main goal is to synthesize hybrid controllers enforcing complex logic properties including the ones represented by the accepting language of deterministic finite automata (DFA), while providing probabilistic guarantees on the satisfaction of given specifications in bounded-time horizons. To do so, we propose a systematic approach to first decompose high-level specifications into simple reachability tasks by utilizing automata corresponding to the complement of specifications. We then construct control sub-barrier certificates and synthesize local controllers for those simpler tasks and combine them to obtain a hybrid controller that ensures satisfaction of the complex specification with some lower-bound on the probability of satisfaction. To compute control sub-barrier certificates and corresponding local controllers, we provide two systematic approaches based on sum-of-squares (SOS) optimization program and counter-example guided inductive synthesis (CEGIS) framework.     Data-Driven Nonlinear Control Designs for Constrained Systems

    Systems with nonlinear dynamics are theoretically constrained to the realm of nonlinear analysis and design, while explicit constraints are expressed as equalities or inequalities of state, input, and output vectors of differential equations. Few control designs exist for systems with such explicit constraints, and no generalized solution has been provided. This dissertation presents general techniques to design stabilizing controls for a specific class of nonlinear systems with constraints on input and output, and verifies that such designs are straightforward to implement in selected applications. Additionally, a closed-form technique for an open-loop problem with unsolvable dynamic equations is developed. Typical optimal control methods cannot be readily applied to nonlinear systems without heavy modification. However, by embedding a novel control framework based on barrier functions and feedback linearization, well-established optimal control techniques become applicable when constraints are imposed by the design in real-time. Applications in power systems and aircraft control often have safety, performance, and hardware restrictions that are combinations of input and output constraints, while cryogenic memory applications have design restrictions and unknown analytic solutions. Most applications fall into a broad class of systems known as passivity-short, in which certain properties are utilized to form a structural framework for system interconnection with existing general stabilizing control techniques. Previous theoretical contributions are extended to include constraints, which can be readily applied to the development of scalable system networks in practical systems, even in the presence of unknown dynamics. In cases such as these, model identification techniques are used to obtain estimated system models which are guaranteed to be at least passivity-short. With numerous analytic tools accessible, a data-driven nonlinear control design framework is developed using model identification resulting in passivity-short systems which handles input and output saturations. Simulations are presented that prove to effectively control and stabilize example practical systems

    Parameter identification in networks of dynamical systems

    Mathematical models of real systems allow to simulate their behavior in conditions that are not easily or affordably reproducible in real life. Defining accurate models, however, is far from trivial and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. This thesis focuses on parameter identification in models of networks of dynamical systems, considering three case studies that fall under this umbrella: two of them are related to neural networks and one to power grids. The first case study is concerned with central pattern generators, i.e. small neural networks involved in animal locomotion. In this case, a design strategy for optimal tuning of biologically-plausible model parameters is developed, resulting in network models able to reproduce key characteristics of animal locomotion. The second case study is in the context of brain networks. In this case, a method to derive the weights of the connections between brain areas is proposed, utilizing both imaging data and nonlinear dynamics principles. The third and last case study deals with a method for the estimation of the inertia constant, a key parameter in determining the frequency stability in power grids. In this case, the method is customized to different challenging scenarios involving renewable energy sources, resulting in accurate estimations of this parameter

    Grid‐forming control for inverter‐based resources in power systems: A review on its operation, system stability, and prospective

    The increasing integration of inverter based resources (IBR) in the power system has a significant multi‐faceted impact on the power system operation and stability. Various control approaches are proposed for IBRs, broadly categorized into grid‐following and grid‐forming (GFM) control strategies. While the GFL has been in operation for some time, the relatively new GFMs are rarely deployed in the IBRs. This article aims to provide an understanding of the working principles and distinguish between these two control strategies. A survey of the recent GFM control approaches is also delivered here, expanding the existing classification. It also explores the role of GFM control and its types in power system dynamics and stability like voltage, frequency etc. Practical insight into these stabilities is provided using case studies, making this review article unique in its comprehensive approach. Lacking elsewhere, the GFMs' real‐world demonstrations and their applications in several IBRs like wind farms, photovoltaic power generation stations etc., are also analyzed. Finally, the research gaps are identified, and the prospect of GFM is presented based on the system needs, informed by GFM real‐world projects. This work is a potential road map for the GFM large‐scale deployment in the decarbonized IBR‐based bulk power system

    Techniques for Decentralized and Dynamic Resource Allocation

    abstract: This thesis investigates three different resource allocation problems, aiming to achieve two common goals: i) adaptivity to a fast-changing environment, ii) distribution of the computation tasks to achieve a favorable solution. The motivation for this work relies on the modern-era proliferation of sensors and devices, in the Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) layer of the Internet of Things (IoT) architecture. To avoid congestion and enable low-latency services, limits have to be imposed on the amount of decisions that can be centralized (i.e. solved in the ``cloud") and/or amount of control information that devices can exchange. This has been the motivation to develop i) a lightweight PHY Layer protocol for time synchronization and scheduling in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), ii) an adaptive receiver that enables Sub-Nyquist sampling, for efficient spectrum sensing at high frequencies, and iii) an SDN-scheme for resource-sharing across different technologies and operators, to harmoniously and holistically respond to fluctuations in demands at the eNodeB' s layer. The proposed solution for time synchronization and scheduling is a new protocol, called PulseSS, which is completely event-driven and is inspired by biological networks. The results on convergence and accuracy for locally connected networks, presented in this thesis, constitute the theoretical foundation for the protocol in terms of performance guarantee. The derived limits provided guidelines for ad-hoc solutions in the actual implementation of the protocol. The proposed receiver for Compressive Spectrum Sensing (CSS) aims at tackling the noise folding phenomenon, e.g., the accumulation of noise from different sub-bands that are folded, prior to sampling and baseband processing, when an analog front-end aliasing mixer is utilized. The sensing phase design has been conducted via a utility maximization approach, thus the scheme derived has been called Cognitive Utility Maximization Multiple Access (CUMMA). The framework described in the last part of the thesis is inspired by stochastic network optimization tools and dynamics. While convergence of the proposed approach remains an open problem, the numerical results here presented suggest the capability of the algorithm to handle traffic fluctuations across operators, while respecting different time and economic constraints.
