Enhanced quantum teleportation in the background of Schwarzschild spacetime by weak measurements
It is commonly believed that the fidelity of quantum teleportation in the
gravitational field would be degraded due to the heat up by the Hawking
radiation. In this paper, we point out that the Hawking effect could be
eliminated by the combined action of pre- and post-weak measurements, and thus
the teleportation fidelity is almost completely protected. It is intriguing to
notice that the enhancement of fidelity could not be attributed to the
improvement of entanglement, but rather to the probabilistic nature of weak
measurements. Our work extends the ability of weak measurements as a quantum
technique to battle against gravitational decoherence in relativistic quantum
information.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, comments are welcom
Tele-education Process Modelling supported by the ODP Enterprise Viewpoint Language
This paper reports on applying the ODP enterprise viewpoint in the domain of tele-education. The work is conducted as part of a research activity that aims at designing a tele-education system to support planning, execution and evaluation of dynamic distributed educational processes. We explore the ODP enterprise viewpoint as a basis for communication and co-operation between educational scientists and ODP systems designers involved in the design process. Our application of the enterprise viewpoint involves four main steps. First, an educational language is proposed to describe educational processes in generic terms. Second, a set of appropriate enterprise language concepts is selected. Third, a relationship is established between the educational language and enterprise language concepts. Fourth, an educational process is modelled in terms of an entity-oriented model and a behaviour-oriented model. It is hoped that the experience gained in this exercise will provide useful feedback to both the educational and ODP communitie
Potential for measuring the longitudinal and lateral profile of muons in TeV air showers with IACTs
Muons are copiously produced within hadronic extensive air showers (EAS)
occurring in the Earth's atmosphere, and are used by particle air shower
detectors as a means of identifying the primary cosmic ray which initiated the
EAS. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), designed for the
detection of gamma-ray initiated EAS for the purposes of Very High Energy (VHE)
gamma-ray astronomy, are subject to a considerable background signal due to
hadronic EAS. Although hadronic EAS are typically rejected for gamma-ray
analysis purposes, single muons produced within such showers generate clearly
identifiable signals in IACTs and muon images are routinely retained and used
for calibration purposes. For IACT arrays operating with a stereoscopic
trigger, when a muon triggers one telescope, other telescopes in IACT arrays
usually detect the associated hadronic EAS. We demonstrate for the first time
the potential of IACT arrays for competitive measurements of the muon content
of air showers, their lateral distribution and longitudinal profile of
production slant heights in the TeV energy range. Such information can provide
useful input to hadronic interaction models.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in

Gradient Echo Quantum Memory for Light using Two-level Atoms
We propose a quantum memory for light that is analogous to the NMR gradient
echo. Our proposal is ideally perfectly efficient and provides simplifications
to current 3-level quantum memory schemes based on controlled inhomogeneous
broadening. Our scheme does not require auxiliary light fields. Instead the
input optical pulse interacts only with two-level atoms that have linearly
increasing Stark shifts. By simply reversing the sign of the atomic Stark
shifts, the pulse is retrieved in the forward direction. We present analytical,
numerical and experimental results of this scheme. We report experimental
efficiencies of up to 15% and suggest simple realizable improvements to
significantly increase the efficiency.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
