Techno-economic drivers are creating the conditions for a radical change of paradigm in the design and operation of future telecommunications infrastructures. In fact, SDN, NFV, Cloud and Edge-Fog Computing are converging together into a single systemic transformation termed “Softwarization” that will find concrete exploitations in 5G systems. The IEEE SDN Initiative1 has elaborated a vision, an evolutionary path and some techno-economic scenarios of this transformation: specifically, the major technical challenges, business sustainability and policy issues have been investigated. This white paper presents: 1) an overview on the main techno-economic drivers steering the “Softwarization” of telecommunications; 2) an introduction to the Open Mobile Edge Cloud vision (covered in a companion white paper); 3) the main technical challenges in terms of operations, security and policy; 4) an analysis of the potential role of open source software; 5) some use case proposals for proof-of-concepts; and 6) a short description of the main socio-economic impacts being produced by “Softwarization”. Along these directions, IEEE SDN is also developing of an open catalogue of software platforms, toolkits, and functionalities aiming at a step-by-step development and aggregation of test-beds/field-trials on SDNNFV- 5G

The network architecture evolution journey will carry on in the years ahead, driving a large scale adoption of 5th Generation (5G) and 5G-Advanced use cases with significantly decreased deployment and operational costs, and enabling new and innovative use-case-driven solutions towards 6th Generation (6G) with higher economic and societal values. The goal of this chapter, thus, is to present the envisioned societal impact, use cases and the End-to-End (E2E) 6G architecture. The E2E 6G architecture includes summarization of the various technical enablers as well as the system and functional views of the architecture

A Framework for Next Generation Cloud-Native SDN Cognitive Resource Orchestrator for IoTs (NG2CRO)

Producción CientíficaSDN (Software Define Networking) and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) are the key enablers for 5G systems and also open many doors in the cloud-native application. Besides, it invites new challenges to the efficiency and scalability of resource management. This work aims to provide a cognitive framework for 5G resource and service orchestration in a cloud-native SDN environment. The proposed NG2CRO framework resource orchestrator is designed to adapt the network’s self-learning capabilities and dynamicity while taken on to account the network’s Markovian properties and diverse service requirements. We consider incorporating AI (Artificial Intelligence) techniques specifically RL (Reinforcement Learning) methodologies because literature has shown that these techniques can efficiently address and comply with the current dynamic behaviors and heterogeneity of 5G services and applications. In conclusion, both benefits and liabilities are discussed of incorporating AI specifically RL into resource orchestration practices that provide us with future research challenges.EU H2020 MSCA ITN-ETN IoTalentum (grant no. 953442)Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León y FEDER (VA231P20)Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Agencia Estatal de Investigación (Proyecto PID2020-112675RB-C42 financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033

The future of Cybersecurity in Italy: Strategic focus area

This volume has been created as a continuation of the previous one, with the aim of outlining a set of focus areas and actions that the Italian Nation research community considers essential. The book touches many aspects of cyber security, ranging from the definition of the infrastructure and controls needed to organize cyberdefence to the actions and technologies to be developed to be better protected, from the identification of the main technologies to be defended to the proposal of a set of horizontal actions for training, awareness raising, and risk management
