Using an Open Software System (Sakai) to Develop Student Portfolios

    Get PDF
E-portfolios are digital collections of artifacts that represent the achievements and reflections of individuals. They offer a unique view into student learning and allow educators and external accreditors to assess student progress towards established standards as well as reviewing their program’s performance in supporting that progress. Students benefit from assembling their e-portfolios through the process of reviewing their own work with a critical eye, choosing pieces of their work that best represent their abilities, and reflecting on the transformative nature of their University experience, both in class and through extra-curricular, service learning, internships and international activities. An e-portfolio provides a holistic view of a student’s personal growth and abilities that will serve them well in their career search or graduate school application. The challenge for an institution is to provide this learning and assessment resource in an accessible and affordable vehicle that is manageable for both faculty and students. Roger Williams University has crafted a strategy to utilize the Sakai open source course management system with its integrated e-portfolio tool set and a linked website to provide both e-portfolios and program assessment. This strategy will also be employed to propose a virtual accreditation of a professional program that will serve as a model throughout the University and the broader higher education community

Process industries overgrow due to increasing demand for petroleum made products. The potential of major accident may significantly increase even more when temporary and emergency change is implemented. In fact, temporary and emergency changes were identified as one of the main contributors to the failure of Management of Change (MOC) in industries, leading to catastrophic outcomes in process industries. However, current MOC implementation and attention, especially towards temporary and emergency, lack in process industries due to inconsistency and different interpretation based on the established standards, time constraint and availability of data.. Corresponding to these weaknesses, an integrated risk analysis framework and system for temporary and emergency change based on PSM is developed. The concept of this research is targeting to provide complete guidance with the aids of documents and software for implementation of temporary and emergency software. Objectives of this research are, to develop temporary and emergency MOC framework, to develop a management system on MOC and to validate frameworks and management system developed through a pilot study. The research process begin with analysing all the requirements in the OSHA PSM standard and including into critical action item in the framework. Framework on temporary and emergency cases is established based on the adopted permanent MOC framework and selected PSM standard requirement. Adopted risk assessment checklists have been proposed with an embedded risk rating to improve risk prioritisation. The developed framework was transformed into a model known as Management of Change Management System (MOCMS) to improve tracking of open and expiring temporary MOC case and ease the process to retrieve information. The validation process of developed framework and system have been conducted through a pilot study by obtaining real data from process plant and testing applicability of developed result by repeating real-life temporary change case using developed framework and software. Meanwhile interview session has been conducted to obtain user and expert feedbacks on the developed results. Results of this study comprised of an overview of the MOC process displayed by a PDCA cycle, a complete MOC process framework with an adopted checklist, and a MOC management system acting as a guidance and documentation software. In overall, the developed framework has complied with the current practice in real process plant where all the necessary forms and checklist used are covered in the developed framework. Besides, the developed framework has proposed more comprehensive and detailed action items, such as specific risk assessment for organisational change and detailed risk assessment checklist in technical and technological change. In addition, the developed management system equipped with the features of recording time taken for every action item has successfully tracked the time taken for a specific action item. It is found that the time required for the completion of risk assessment in the developed framework is relatively shorter than the original MOC risk assessment process. Therefore, the pilot study has confirmed the MOC framework met critical elements in the MOC of selected MOC regulation with improvement to identified issues. The performance of the MOC framework and software shall be measure on the timely completion of MOC action items, and improvement in In contrast, the management system is reliable to improve system documentation and information storage

Standardization Framework for Sustainability from Circular Economy 4.0

The circular economy (CE) is widely known as a way to implement and achieve sustainability, mainly due to its contribution towards the separation of biological and technical nutrients under cyclic industrial metabolism. The incorporation of the principles of the CE in the links of the value chain of the various sectors of the economy strives to ensure circularity, safety, and efficiency. The framework proposed is aligned with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development regarding the orientation towards the mitigation and regeneration of the metabolic rift by considering a double perspective. Firstly, it strives to conceptualize the CE as a paradigm of sustainability. Its principles are established, and its techniques and tools are organized into two frameworks oriented towards causes (cradle to cradle) and effects (life cycle assessment), and these are structured under the three pillars of sustainability, for their projection within the proposed framework. Secondly, a framework is established to facilitate the implementation of the CE with the use of standards, which constitute the requirements, tools, and indicators to control each life cycle phase, and of key enabling technologies (KETs) that add circular value 4.0 to the socio-ecological transition

Enterprise information security policy assessment - an extended framework for metrics development utilising the goal-question-metric approach

    Get PDF
Effective enterprise information security policy management requires review and assessment activities to ensure information security policies are aligned with business goals and objectives. As security policy management involves the elements of policy development process and the security policy as output, the context for security policy assessment requires goal-based metrics for these two elements. However, the current security management assessment methods only provide checklist types of assessment that are predefined by industry best practices and do not allow for developing specific goal-based metrics. Utilizing theories drawn from literature, this paper proposes the Enterprise Information Security Policy Assessment approach that expands on the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) approach. The proposed assessment approach is then applied in a case scenario example to illustrate a practical application. It is shown that the proposed framework addresses the requirement for developing assessment metrics and allows for the concurrent undertaking of process-based and product-based assessment. Recommendations for further research activities include the conduct of empirical research to validate the propositions and the practical application of the proposed assessment approach in case studies to provide opportunities to introduce further enhancements to the approach

    Integrated sustainability management for organizations

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose the Viable System Model (VSM) as an effective model to base the analysis of organizational sustainability (long-term viability). It is specifically proposed as a model to integrate the various sustainability tools, and as the basis for designing a unified Sustainability Management System. Design/methodology/approach – The VSM is used as an organizational model to examine three prominent sustainability standards: ISO 26000, ISO 14001 and ISO 14044. A generic manufacturing company is used as a template; and its typical business processes are related to each of the VSM’s components. Each clause of the three sustainability standards is then mapped on to the VSM model. These three models are integrated into one, by analysing the differences, similarities and complementarities in the context of each VSM component, and by identifying common invariant functions. Findings – In all, 12 generic sustainability functions are identified. ISO 26000 has the widest scope; ISO 14001 is focused primarily on internal measurement and control (System 3), while ISO 14044 is a complex performance indicator at the System 3 level. There is a general absence of System 2. Each standard can be regarded as a distinct management layer, which needs to be integrated with the Business Management layer. Research limitations/implications – Further research is needed to explore the specifics of integration. Practical implications – This integration should not be based on creating distinct roles for each management layer. Originality/value – The paper uses the insights of organizational cybernetics to examine prominent sustainability standards and advance sustainability management at the business level

The evaluation of E-business related technologies in the Railway Industry

    Get PDF
For the purposes of this paper, e-business is defined as: "the performance, automisation and organisation of transactions, or chains of them, and the gathering and publishing of data, electronically over a communication protocol" Little research has been conducted either into how e-business technology can be successfully evaluated, or into the associated costs and benefits specifically related to the transportation and railway industries. Based upon a review of the current literature and a series of interviews held with railway operators, track managers and transportation customers from the Australian Fortune 100, the paper puts forward a framework for the evaluation of e-business investments within the railway industry. The research reported here is aimed at developing a flexible interface that enables the decision maker to assess and evaluate a wide variety of complex interacting variables. The proposed approach uses a variety of evaluation methods, as opposed to searching for a single "best" approach. Additionally, an attempt is being made to include the complex interaction between the implementation of the new technology and the changing organisational setting. A model is proposed using fuzzy logic to handle incomplete and uncertain knowledge; as well as to combine criteria within a conceptual model from which "real-worth" evaluations can be performed. This model provides a systematic approach to guide the decision maker in the deployment of e-business and emerging technologies in the industry. After discussing the main findings from a literature review on the use of evaluation frameworks in IT related projects, the paper deals with the proposed framework in detail. The use of empirical data, which was obtained transportation customers to help define the main framework factors, is also discussed. Finally, the paper summarises the main implications for rail freight of customers’s perceptions and stated needs in the e-business domain
