Crowdsourced real-world sensing: sentiment analysis and the real-time web
The advent of the real-time web is proving both challeng-
ing and at the same time disruptive for a number of areas of research,
notably information retrieval and web data mining. As an area of research reaching maturity, sentiment analysis oers a promising direction for modelling the text content available in real-time streams. This paper reviews the real-time web as a new area of focus for sentiment analysis
and discusses the motivations and challenges behind such a direction
When is multitask learning effective? Semantic sequence prediction under varying data conditions
Multitask learning has been applied successfully to a range of tasks, mostly
morphosyntactic. However, little is known on when MTL works and whether there
are data characteristics that help to determine its success. In this paper we
evaluate a range of semantic sequence labeling tasks in a MTL setup. We examine
different auxiliary tasks, amongst which a novel setup, and correlate their
impact to data-dependent conditions. Our results show that MTL is not always
effective, significant improvements are obtained only for 1 out of 5 tasks.
When successful, auxiliary tasks with compact and more uniform label
distributions are preferable.Comment: In EACL 201
NLP Community Perspectives on Replicability.
International audienceWith recent efforts in drawing attention to the task of replicating and/or reproducing1 results, for example in the context of COLING 2018 and various LREC workshops, the question arises how the NLP community views the topic of replicability in general. Using a survey, in which we involve members of the NLP community, we investigate how our community perceives this topic, its relevance and options for improvement. Based on over two hundred participants, the survey results confirm earlier observations, that successful reproducibility requires more than having access to code and data. Additionally, the results show that the topic has to be tackled from the authors, reviewers and community 's side
