Multidisciplinary computational aerosciences
As the challenges of single disciplinary computational physics are met, such as computational fluid dynamics, computational structural mechanics, computational propulsion, computational aeroacoustics, computational electromagnetics, etc., scientists have begun investigating the combination of these single disciplines into what is being called multidisciplinary computational aerosciences (MCAS). The combination of several disciplines not only offers simulation realism but also formidable computational challenges. The solution of such problems will require computers orders of magnitude larger than those currently available. Such computer power can only be supplied by massively parallel machines because of the current speed-of-light limitation of conventional serial systems. Even with such machines, MCAS problems will require hundreds of hours for their solution. To efficiently utilize such a machine, research is required in three areas that include parallel architectures, systems software, and applications software. The main emphasis of this paper is the applications software element. Examples that demonstrate application software for multidisciplinary problems currently being solved at NASA Ames Research Center are presented. Pacing items for MCAS are discussed such as solution methodology, physical modeling, computer power, and multidisciplinary validation experiments
Vision Science and Technology at NASA: Results of a Workshop
A broad review is given of vision science and technology within NASA. The subject is defined and its applications in both NASA and the nation at large are noted. A survey of current NASA efforts is given, noting strengths and weaknesses of the NASA program
Mppsocgen: A framework for automatic generation of mppsoc architecture
Automatic code generation is a standard method in software engineering since
it improves the code consistency and reduces the overall development time. In
this context, this paper presents a design flow for automatic VHDL code
generation of mppSoC (massively parallel processing System-on-Chip)
configuration. Indeed, depending on the application requirements, a framework
of Netbeans Platform Software Tool named MppSoCGEN was developed in order to
accelerate the design process of complex mppSoC. Starting from an architecture
parameters design, VHDL code will be automatically generated using parsing
method. Configuration rules are proposed to have a correct and valid VHDL
syntax configuration. Finally, an automatic generation of Processor Elements
and network topologies models of mppSoC architecture will be done for Stratix
II device family. Our framework improves its flexibility on Netbeans 5.5
version and centrino duo Core 2GHz with 22 Kbytes and 3 seconds average
runtime. Experimental results for reduction algorithm validate our MppSoCGEN
design flow and demonstrate the efficiency of generated architectures.Comment: 16 pages; International Journal of Computer Science & Information

Adaptive control in rollforward recovery for extreme scale multigrid
With the increasing number of compute components, failures in future
exa-scale computer systems are expected to become more frequent. This motivates
the study of novel resilience techniques. Here, we extend a recently proposed
algorithm-based recovery method for multigrid iterations by introducing an
adaptive control. After a fault, the healthy part of the system continues the
iterative solution process, while the solution in the faulty domain is
re-constructed by an asynchronous on-line recovery. The computations in both
the faulty and healthy subdomains must be coordinated in a sensitive way, in
particular, both under and over-solving must be avoided. Both of these waste
computational resources and will therefore increase the overall
time-to-solution. To control the local recovery and guarantee an optimal
re-coupling, we introduce a stopping criterion based on a mathematical error
estimator. It involves hierarchical weighted sums of residuals within the
context of uniformly refined meshes and is well-suited in the context of
parallel high-performance computing. The re-coupling process is steered by
local contributions of the error estimator. We propose and compare two criteria
which differ in their weights. Failure scenarios when solving up to
unknowns on more than 245\,766 parallel processes will be
reported on a state-of-the-art peta-scale supercomputer demonstrating the
robustness of the method
Large Eddy Simulations of gaseous flames in gas turbine combustion chambers
Recent developments in numerical schemes, turbulent combustion models and the regular increase of computing power allow Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to be applied to real industrial burners. In this paper, two types of LES in complex geometry combustors and of specific interest for aeronautical gas turbine burners are reviewed: (1) laboratory-scale combustors, without compressor or turbine, in which advanced measurements are possible and (2) combustion chambers of existing engines operated in realistic operating conditions. Laboratory-scale burners are designed to assess modeling and funda- mental flow aspects in controlled configurations. They are necessary to gauge LES strategies and identify potential limitations. In specific circumstances, they even offer near model-free or DNS-like LES computations. LES in real engines illustrate the potential of the approach in the context of industrial burners but are more difficult to validate due to the limited set of available measurements. Usual approaches for turbulence and combustion sub-grid models including chemistry modeling are first recalled. Limiting cases and range of validity of the models are specifically recalled before a discussion on the numerical breakthrough which have allowed LES to be applied to these complex cases. Specific issues linked to real gas turbine chambers are discussed: multi-perforation, complex acoustic impedances at inlet and outlet, annular chambers.. Examples are provided for mean flow predictions (velocity, temperature and species) as well as unsteady mechanisms (quenching, ignition, combustion instabil- ities). Finally, potential perspectives are proposed to further improve the use of LES for real gas turbine combustor designs
